Bayern Munich have named Max Eberl as their new board member for sport. The former Borussia Mönchengladbach and RB Leipzig chief will begin the role on 1 March, after signing a contract until 30 June 2027.

"We are delighted to have appointed Max Eberl as our new board member for sport," said Bayern president Herbert Hainer. "Not only does he have decades of experience in football management, but he also started playing at FC Bayern and turned professional here. We are convinced that he will successfully shape and characterise the future of this club."

Eberl, 50, is a former Bayern player, having represented the club's various youth teams and made his professional debut for the record champions, before spells with Bochum, Greuther Fürth and Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Bavarian native began a career in management in 2005, working first as Gladbach youth coordinator and then sporting director until January 2022. His most recent position was as sporting director at Leipzig from the end of 2022 until September 2023.

"I spent my entire childhood and youth at FC Bayern and in Munich, so it’s something special for me to return in a new role to the club where it all began," Eberl told the Bayern website. "The job as board member for sport is a great challenge, which I will approach with a lot of respect and humility, but with even more anticipation. Together with everyone here, I want to do everything I can to ensure that FC Bayern continues to be successful in the future and brings joy to its fans."

Bayern have also revealed a structural revamp. As of 1 July, the club's executive board will consist of three positions: a chief executive officer (Jan-Christian Dreesen), a chief financial & sales officer (Michael Diederich) and a board member for sport (Eberl).

One of Eberl's first assignments will be to help find a successor to Thomas Tuchel, who will vacate his position as head coach at the end of the 2023/24 season. The decision was made by mutual consent, ending the working relationship one year before Tuchel's existing contract was due to expire.

Bayern, who have won the last 11 Bundesliga titles in a row, are currently eight points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen. They trail Lazio in their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie, and were eliminated by third-tier Saarbrücken in the DFB Cup second round.
