After racing to a 2-0 lead midway through the first half, Nuremberg were pegged back as the interval approached with Regensburg, bottom of the table and with just one goal scored all season prior to kick-off, clinical in staging an unlikely comeback.

Justin Justvan restored Nuremberg’s lead moments later, paving the way for an astonishing second half. Regensburg equalised again shortly after the restart but Justvan edged the home side in front once more just before the hour-mark.

A topsy-turvy encounter was ultimately decided thanks to a four-goal spell in the final quarter of an hour, in which Justvan completed his hat-trick.

Nuremberg’s eight-goal haul means that only one team in Bundesliga 2 history has ever scored more goals in a single match, namely when Hansa Rostock thrashed Koblenz 9-0 in October 2008.

Not only that, but it is also the joint second-highest scoring game ever in Germany’s second tier.

Two games had produced 11 goals apiece previously: Fortuna Köln beat Saarbrücken 7-4 on 17 October 1993, while Paderborn also won 8-3 against Erzgebirge Aue on 9 May 2021.
