DFL and AWS add Shot Speed to Bundesliga Match Facts
The DFL and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have announced the newest Bundesliga Match Facts (BMF) powered by AWS which will debut during Matchday 10.
The DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga and Amazon Web Services (AWS) add Shot Speed to the portfolio of Bundesliga Match Facts powered by AWS. The 15th Match Fact will debut during Matchday 10, which features Der Klassiker between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
Shot Speed is a decisive factor in overcoming the goalkeeper to score a goal. The new Bundesliga Match Fact is based on live tracking data. Shots on goal are measured by evaluating the position data of the ball, measured directly at the beginning of a shot when the ball reaches the highest speed. Exceptionally high speeds will be highlighted directly after an individual shot. Furthermore, rankings will show which players have achieved the highest shot speed on a matchday or during a season. The new Match Fact also highlights the performance of a goalkeeper when he saves a shot at high speed. The Data Story Finder, DFL’s Artificial Intelligence-driven system to support live commentary, will enable broadcasters and their commentators to highlight all goals with particularly high shot speeds, those above 100 kilometres per hour (62 miles per hour).

Since the start of 2020, the DFL and AWS have collaborated on numerous projects, including the use of data analytics. The partnership has enabled the live processing of data into innovative statistics, resulting in Bundesliga Match Facts powered by AWS. They can help audiences better understand the performance and game strategy of teams and offer deeper insights into the performances of their favourite players. Bundesliga Match Facts are made available on broadcasts, through the Bundesliga platforms and channels, as well as in the Bundesliga app.
The DFL generates Bundesliga Match Facts by gathering and analysing a total of 3.6 million data points from each game in real time, using a combination of AWS analytics and machine learning tools, as well as computing, storage, database, and serverless services. The new stat brings the total of Bundesliga Match Facts powered by AWS to 15, delivering a comprehensive set of real-time advanced analysis. Shot Speed joins Keeper Efficiency, Ball Recovery Time, Pressure Handling, Win Probability, Set Piece Threat, Skill, Most Pressed Player, Attacking Zones, Average Positions: Trends, Shot Efficiency, Passing Profile, Speed Alert, Average Positions, and xGoals.
