Nico Elvedi leaves Borussia Mönchengladbach for Leeds United
Borussia Mönchengladbach's Swiss international defender Nico Elvedi is leaving the club after more than a decade and over 300 Bundesliga appearances.
Elvedi joined Gladbach as an 18-year-old from his hometown club FC Zürich in 2015 and soon cut a dominant figure at the heart of their defence.
He remained a near ever-present for over a decade in the Bundesliga, totalling 318 appearances while scoring 15 goals. He also made 17 UEFA Champions League appearances as well as playing 24 times in the DFB Cup and five times in the Europa League for the club.
Gladbach's head of sports Rouven Schröder said: "Legend is a word you shouldn’t use lightly, but Nico Elvedi is a true Borussia legend! Losing someone like that is painful, both on the pitch and on a personal level. We want to thank Nico wholeheartedly for everything he has done and wish him nothing but the best for the future!"
The 29-year-old, who has 79 caps for Switzerland and featured in their run to the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, said: "It’s not easy to leave, but I feel the time is right for me to experience something new. I want to say thank you for 11 years that have shaped me enormously and made me the person I am today. I’m especially grateful to the fans, who have always supported me."
The Foals must open their Bundesliga campaign without the experienced defender at RB Leipzig on Saturday 29 August (kick-off: 3.30pm CEST).
