Niko Kovač contract extension at Borussia Dortmund 'only a matter of time'
Borussia Dortmund have said it is “only a matter of time” before coach Niko Kovač signs a contract extension following his table-topping side’s perfect start to the 2026/27 Bundesliga season.
Ahead of Friday’s Matchday 5 curtain-raiser with Werder Bremen, Dortmund sit two points clear at the top of the German top flight with four wins from as many league outings under Kovač and are the only team in the division with a perfect record.

The eight-time German champions have also made winning starts in the UEFA Champions League and DFB Cup, and though Kovač’s current deal expires at the end of the current campaign, Dortmund are convinced his longer-term future is with them.
“We have an incredible amount of esteem for Niko Kovač. It’s only a matter of time, that’s clear,” BVB’s CEO Carsten Cramer told German media when asked about the coach’s contractual situation. “Because we weren’t all here during the international break, there are a still a couple of discussions to be had, so the situation remains open for the time being.”
Former Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg boss Kovač, 54, was brought in by Dortmund to replace Nuri Şahin in February 2025 with the team struggling in the lower half of the table.
He revived their fortunes to finish in the Champions League qualifying places before claiming the runners-up spot behind Bayern last season, and this term set a record as the Dortmund coach to have collected the most points in his first 50 games in charge.
