Jannis Heuer's stunning set-piece hands Paderborn priceless win against Kaiserslautern
A superbly struck free-kick from Jannis Heuer helped Paderborn to jump into the provisional top three spots in Bundesliga 2 with fellow promotion chasers Kaiserslautern suffering a second successive loss.
Paderborn 1-0 Kaiserslautern
Goals: 1-0 Heuer 78'
Neck-and-neck on points going into their Friday encounter at the Home Deluxe Arena, both sides were eager to gain a win that promised the prize of a provisional spot in the division’s top three. An open contest soon ensued, with Philipp Klement and then Julian Justvan spurning chances at both ends. Motoring along on 10 second-tier goals prior to this game, former USMNT international Terence Boyd looked to add to his tally as the half progressed. The 32-year-old flashed a shot across the face of the target while he would later be denied by a goal-saving tackle from Heuer. Prior to the latter chance, Marvin Pieringer deflected Marcel Hoffmeier’s centre over as the hosts caused problems.
Kaiserslautern’s recent run of five successive wins was checked by St. Pauli last weekend, but the Red Devils showed plenty of guile as they looked to put their Matchday 20 disappointment behind them. The away side went mightily close to taking the lead midway through the second half when Boyd connected with Jean Zimmer’s cross before seeing his effort come back off the woodwork. Paderborn rallied and posted a warning when Sebastian Klaas fired inches wide of the upright. The home fans didn’t have their heads in their hands for long, however, with Heuer’s smartly struck free-kick sparking the celebrations. The side from North Rhine-Westphalia then pulled off a last-ditch goal-line clearance to ensure a major boost in their promotion push.

Matchday 21 round-up:
Jahn Regensburg 1-1 Hannover
Goals: 1-0 Singh (16'), 1-1 Teuchert (88')
Looking to climb out of the relegation places they occupied ahead of kick-off, Regensburg were given the perfect start by Bayern Munich loanee Sarpreet Singh. The New Zealand international was making just his fourth appearance of an injury-hit campaign, and it was the perfect time for the 23-year-old to register his first goal of the season. It appeared the hosts would secure all three points but they were ultimately denied at the death by Cedric Tecuhert’s late equaliser.
Greuther Fürth 2-1 Fortuna Düsseldorf
Goals: 1-0 Ache (28'), 2-0 Ache (57'), 2-1 Petersen (67')
Red card: De Wijs (90+4‘)
The Cloverleaves went into the weekend having lost just once at home all season and faced Fortuna on the back of a seven game unbeaten run at the Sportpark Ronhof. They’d also won each of their previous three games in Fürth 1-0 and took the lead less than half an hour in. Ragnar Ache provided the opener, with his fourth goal of the season putting his side on course to extend their excellent run on home soil. Ache made sure by adding a second after the break that, despite Kristoffer Petersen’s consolation, sealed a victory that closes the gap between the two sides to just six points.
Hansa Rostock 0-1 Darmstadt
Goals: 0-1 Tietz (78’)
Philipp Tietz scored the only goal of the game in the closing stages as Bundesliga 2 leaders Darmstadt consolidated top spot with a hard-fought win that leaves them 10 points clear of a non-automatic promotion place. After an evenly balanced first half in Rostock, the visitors turned on the style in the second period and created a number of presentable opportunities. However, it wasn’t until Tietz’s direct free-kick in the 78th minute that the deadlock was broken, earning Darmstadt their 14th league win of the season.

Magdeburg 1-2 St. Pauli
Goals: 1-0 Atik (39’), 1-1 Irvine (74’), 1-2 Medic (88’)
Magdeburg were bottom as recently as Matchday 19 but a subsequent draw with Karlsruhe and dramatic 3-2 win over Hamburg have raised hope that last year’s third division champions may have enough about them to remain in the division. And they were moving in the right direction once again when Baris Atik found the back of the next six minutes before the interval. But Pauli turned the game on its head in the second half - clinching victory thanks to goals from Jackson Irvine and Jakov Medic.
Eintracht Braunschweig 2-3 Holstein Kiel
Goals: 0-1 Reese (14’), 0-2 Fridjonsson (22’), 0-3 Becker (48’), 1-3 Multhaup (57’), 2-3 Wiebe (69’)
Kiel were forced to survive a second-half fightback from Braunschweig as they held on for their eighth league win of the season. The visitors raced 2-0 ahead thanks to early goals from Fabian Reese and Holmbert Fridjonsson, and when Timo Becker added a third early in the second half, the game looked to be done and dusted. The home side had other ideas, however, and clawed their way back into it via strikes from Maurice Multhaup and Danilo Wiebe. Yet despite having over 20 minutes left to find an equaliser, they were unable to do as Kiel just about saw the game over the line.
Hamburg 2-1 Arminia Bielefeld
Goals: 1-0 Reis (26'), 1-1 Oczipka (51'), 2-1 Jatta (57')
Bielefeld thought they were in front just 13 minutes into their trip to Hamburg as Frederik Jäkel converted from close range, but their celebrations were cut short thanks to VAR that clearly showed the on-loan RB Leipzig man was offside in the build-up. Soon after, it was the home side that eventually took the lead, with Ludovit Reis finding the back of the net for the sixth time this term. Bielefeld were probably feeling a bit hard done by at the break but they soon found themselves level thanks to Bastian Oczipka. HSV were back in front shortly before the hour mark, however, with Bakery Jatta on target to seal all three points and keep Hamburg within four points of top spot.

Heidenheim 5-0 Nuremberg
Goals: 1-0 Kleindienst (19'), 2-0 Kleindienst (23'), 3-0 Kleindienst (39'), 4-0 Kleindienst (81'), 5-0 Busch (86')
Red card: Valentini (33')
Looking to move back into third-place following Paderborn's victory, Heidenheim wasted little time in getting their noses in front. Tim Kleindienst was the man who opened the scoring, pouncing from close range to put the hosts ahead with 19 minutes on the clock. Just four minutes later, Kleindienst double both his and his team's tallies to leave Nuremberg reeling. They were soon right on the ropes as Enrico Valentini was shown a red card, before Kleindienst delivered a knockout blow by completing a first half hat-trick. He added further misery late on, hitting his fourth of the game with nine minutes to go before Marnon Busch added a fifth on a great day for the hosts and a miserable one for their guests.
Watch: Kleindienst's four-goal haul
Sandhausen 0-3 Karlsruhe
Goals: 0-1 Gondorf (8'), 0-2 Kaufmann (52'), 0-3 Schleusener (73')
The visitors flew out the traps, with Karlsruhe taking an eighth-minute lead through 34-year-old Jerome Gondorf's second goal of the campaign. They doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half thanks to Mikkel Kaufmann's effort before Fabian Schleusener added a third. That ensured Karlsruhe left with all three points - a result that leaves Sandhausen rooted to the bottom of the table.
