RB Leipzig's Christoph Baumgartner was on target as Austria recorded a crucial win over Poland in UEFA Euro 2024 Group D.

Poland 1-3 Austria
Goals: 0-1
Trauner 9’ (assist: Mwene), 1-1 Piątek 30' (assist: Bednarek), 1-2 Baumgartner 66' (assist: Prass), 1-3 Arnautović (pen. 78')

Austria made a dream start as Mainz's Phillipp Mwene crossed for Gernot Trauner to power in a header. Freiburg defender Philipp Lienhart prevented Piotr Zieliński from bringing Poland level, but there was nothing to be done about former Hertha Berlin forward Krzysztof Piątek firing home after Jan Bednarek's initial effort had been blocked. Patrick Pentz saved well from Zieliński as the two nations went in level in the game - and on points - at the break. Bundesliga legend Robert Lewandowski was introduced soon after the restart, but it was Austria who forged ahead through a superb Baumgartner finish from the edge of the area. Ex-Werder Bremen man Marko Arnautović then sealed all three points from the penalty spot to give Austria every chance of progressing to the last 16, whilst leaving Poland's prospects hanging by a thread.
