VfB Stuttgart storm into DFB Cup second round with Münster rout

xwhatsappmailcopy-link

VfB Stuttgart breezed into the DFB Cup second round, thanks to a one-sided 5-0 win away to Bundesliga 2's Preußen Münster.

Preußen Münster 0-5 Stuttgart
Goals: 0-1 Stiller 7’, 0-2 Demirović 15’ (assist: Stiller), 0-3 Stenzel 35’ (assist: Demirović), 0-4 Woltemade 71‘ (assist: Undav), 0-5 Karazor pen. 80’

Stuttgart started well, with Chris Führich a particular threat. His cross from the left in the opening five minutes found an unmarked Ermedin Demirović, whose close-range volley was well blocked. Münster failed to clear the subsequent corner and, after a brilliant save by Morten Behrens from Fabian Rieder, Angelo Stiller was on hand to finish into an empty net and give Stuttgart an early lead. The home fans were in fine voice throughout, but it was the Stuttgart contingent who were given something to celebrate again in the 15th minute as Stiller turned provider for Demirović, who headed home unchallenged in the area. Pascal Stenzel headed in from a similar distance to give Stuttgart a comfortable half-time lead.

A triple substitution at the start of the second half provided Münster with more impetus, and when the ball fell to the Charalambos Makridis on the volley from a free-kick, the Münster fans may have thought they’d found a route back into the game. However, he could only blaze his volley into the stand behind Alexander Nübel's goal. Stuttgart soon picked up where they left off in the first half, dominating the ball and getting in behind the Münster backline at will. Substitute Deniz Undav was the catalyst for their fourth goal, teeing up Nick Woltemade for an emphatic first goal for the club. Atakan Karazor added the gloss from the penalty spot after Mikkel Kirkeskov was adjudged to have handled Woltemade's cross.

Match stats

  • Stuttgart have won their last five DFB Cup first-round ties since exiting at the first hurdle in 2018/19 with a 2-0 loss to Hansa Rostock.

  • Karazor took - and scored - the first penalty of his professional career.
  • Münster have not progressed beyond the second round of the cup since 1990/91, when they lost to Stuttgart in the last 16.

Full-time! Münster 0-5 Stuttgart

Stuttgart are through to the second round. They were a class above second-tier Münster, who look like they'll have a real fight on to avoid an immediate return to the 3. Liga in the months ahead.

Penalty!

Kirkeskov handles Woltemade's cross as he goes to ground in an attempt to block. With no VAR, it's given the way of Stuttgart. Karazor to take...

What a hit!

Stuttgart find another gear and duly extend their lead as Woltemade applies a thunderous finish to a flowing move to bring up his first competitive goal for his new club. Lovely, lovely stuff!

Undav from downtown!

The Stuttgart sub is off target with a lobbed attempt some 45 yards from goal. That would have been special!

One-sided affair

This has been more like a training game for Stuttgart. Münster haven't managed to cause the Bundesliga club any real problems, but then they did only just come up to the second tier from Germany's 3. Liga.

On the Chase

Anrie Chase brilliantly blocks of his man as Münster plot a route towards Nübel's goal. Big things are expected of the 20-year-old Japanese defender.
61'

Fresh legs, fresh ideas

Amenyido, one of the players cycled out of the Münster starting line-up, is on. So, too, are Stuttgart duo Undav and Leweling. Some real quality in this VfB squad as they prepare to battle on three fronts in 2024/25.

Stuttgart flying through

Beaten by eventual winners Leverkusen in the quarter-finals last term, VfB are cruising into the second round, where the likes of Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig await. Leverkusen go to fourth-tier Jena tomorrow, in the final fixture of the first round.

Chance!

Chabot only half clears a Kirkeskov free-kick. Makridis takes it on, but can't keep his shot from eight yards out down.
49'

Ouch!

Karazor goes down after blocking a fierce long-range shot from Mees, but is able to continue.

Changes at the break

Three for Münster - which is no real surprise. Only one for VfB, with Krätzig - who scored here for parent club Bayern Munich in last season's first round - on for Mittelstädt at left-back.

Half-time! Münster 0-3 Stuttgart

A very routine first half for Stuttgart, who lead 3-0 at the break. The gulf has been huge - it's hard to see anything but a big win for the Bundesliga side.

Foul play

Let-off for Münster as Demirovic is adjudged to have fouled his marker when challenging for a dangerous cross into the mixer. The Stuttgart No.9 has been a nuisance from the get-go.
39'

Nübel untested

Another speculative strike, this time from Frenkert, who skies one from 18 yards.
35'

Threeasy peasy

Münster's defence is all at sea as Demirovic curls in a cross from the left, with Stenzel all alone on the edge of the six-yard box to head in a third Stuttgart goal. This could get very ugly for the Bundesliga 2 outfit.

Wayward

Grodowski runs at the VfB defence, before launching a long-range strike high over Nübel's goal.
26'

Full of effort

Münster are having a good go at this, albeit without seriously testing the Stuttgart rearguard. It might take a set-piece to get them back into the game...
21'

Caution

Münster's Hendrix goes into the book after taking down Rieder.

Stuttgart flying

Hoeneß will be delighted with this, especially after Supercup and Bundesliga defeats to Leverkusen and Stuttgart, respectively.
15'

Too easy!

Führich races away and drops a pass off for Stiller. He whips it into the box, where an unmarked Demirovic has the simple task of planting a header past Behrens.
11'

That's more like it!

The home team get a few balls into the box. In the end, it's Makridis who takes on a shot that's blocked behind off a red shirt. Stuttgart survive the ensuing corner.
7'

Dream start!

Stuttgart lead following that corner. Behrens saves well from Stenzel, but Stuttgart keep the chance alive. The ball eventually finds Stiller, who drills home from inside the box.

Close!

Stuttgart attack with Führich. His cross drops for Demirovic, who drills wide off a Münster defender from 12 yards.

VfB in control

Commanding stuff from the Bundesliga side. They're dictating the play early on.

Some pyrotechnic-related delays in Münster, but we're up and running now!

Hoping for an upset

Hildmann's view on Stuttgart

"Stuttgart are obviously the big favourites and have a great team with an incredible amount of quality. Every single one of us will need to play a blinder, if we're to spring a surprise."

Hoeneß's view on Münster

"It's going to be tough. Münster have been promoted to Bundesliga 2. They haven’t started particularly well, but there’s still a great sense of euphoria. We have to show the right attitude and play with the right mindset, but we’re confident of doing so."

Demirović threat

New Stuttgart signing Ermedin Demirović opened his VfB goalscoring account on Saturday, the Bosnia and Herzegovina international picking up where he left off following a remarkable 2023/24 at Augsburg, where the striker scored 15 Bundesliga goals and laid on 10 assists.

Stadium watch

The 14,300 capacity Preußenstadion is the venue for Tuesday's enticing Cup meeting and the ground is known to generate a special atmosphere on match days.

Hoping to learn

Maximilian Mittelstädt said that Stuttgart would be looking to build on what they learned from in the weekend defeat in Freiburg in order to boost their chances of victory in Tuesday's Cup tie "[That] was the kind of match that we can learn from; we know what our strengths are, and we can build on them," the 27-year-old explained.

Stuttgart's Cup history

Stuttgart are three-time winners of the DFB Cup. The last time Die Schwaben lifted the trophy was in 1997, when a Giovane Élber double saw off the challenge of Energie Cottbus in the Berlin final.

Münster are back

Preußen Münster won promotion to the German second-tier for the first time since 1991 after securing a second-place finish in 3.Liga on the last day of last season.

Redemption shot

Stuttgart went out of last season's DFB Cup at the quarter-final stage to eventual winners Bayer Leverkusen. The Swabians suffered a similar fate at the hands of the Bundesliga champions in this term's Supercup. Can those losses spur Tuesday's visitors into embarking on one more cup run this time around?

Can VfB bounce back?

Last season's Bundesliga runners-up suffered a 3-1 opening-day reverse against Freiburg at the weekend. A trip to second-tier Preußen Münster on Tuesday offers Sebastian Hoeneß's charges a chance to regroup and go again.

Welcome!

Some 10 days after the rest of the first-round ties, Preußen Münster and VfB Stuttgart finally begin their DFB Cup campaign on Tuesday (kick-off: 8.45pm CEST).
