Key stats
Kristensen is hoping to find a new home to display his talent and tenacity with his move to Frankfurt in summer 2024 after making 29 appearances on loan to Roma in the 2023/24 season and earning praise several times from coach Jose Mourinho before his departure in January. Kristensen had been signed by Leeds to be reunited with his former coach at Red Bull Salzburg, one-time Leipzig boss Jesse Marsch, in summer 2022, but relegation from the Premier League the following season left the Dane looking for pastures new.
Kristensen's final season in Salzburg, 2021/22, provides the best indication of his capabilities, with a strong seven goals and four assists in the league - with five goal involvements in the opening five matches of an Austrian Bundesliga season in which he captained his side on several occasions. He won his third consecutive Austrian double in that campaign and was voted into the Austrian Bundesliga's Team of the Year for a second time in a row.
Kristensen gained two assists in 19 UEFA Champions League appearances during his three seasons in Austria, including one at Bayern Munich in a 3-1 defeat in November 2020. He arrived in Salzburg after 18 months spent at Ajax in which he failed to fully break through after impressing as a young talent for Midtjylland in his native Denmark before earning his move to Amsterdam in January 2018.
Having played for Denmark in all the age levels from U18 up, Kristensen made his full international debut in September 2021 against the Faroe Islands. He has gained 21 senior international appearances as of July 2024, including in all three matches for the Danes at the 2022 World Cup, while he was in Denmark's UEFA Euro 2024 squad but did not get any playing time in Germany.
Plays a bit like: Julian Ryerson
Looking beyond their Scandanavian steel there are several strong similarities between Borussia Dortmund's Norwegian full-back and the Dane operating in the same area for Frankfurt. The pair have a defensive solidity that is rare for full-backs in the modern game, but burst forward at every opportunity too - with their desire, rather than technique, taking them around defenders. While goalscoring is not a key feature of Kristenen's job description, he can strike a football with venom and has sunk numerous powerful headers when arriving in the box.
Did you know?
Kristensen might just be hoping the classic tune I Feel Good aptly describes his mood in Frankfurt. He told the Red Bull Salzburg club website during his time there that contrary to the hip hop most of his team-mates preferred, he is fond of listening to the old school funk of James Brown. He also declared himself a fan of Mike & the Mechanics and Prince.
What they're saying
"We were interested in Rasmus as far back as three years ago and are delighted that it’s now worked out. We had very good talks and sensed that he absolutely wanted to come to us. Rasmus is a robust, tough-tackling player, who’s an out-and-out right-back but can also play at centre-back.” - Frankfurt board member for sport Markus Krösche
“Today is a great day for me. I’m delighted that I’m now at Eintracht Frankfurt. I recently experienced the stadium in person at the European Championship and can’t wait to play here soon.” - Kristensen
