Bayern Munich legend - and current club chairman - Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has hailed Robert Lewandowski "the best striker in the world" after the Poland captain bagged a fifth Torjägerkanone of his career.

Lewandowski took his 2019/20 goal tally to 34 with his penalty in the 4-0 win over Wolfsburg on the final matchday, making it a personal best for the 31-year-old as he was deservedly named Player of the Season.

It is the fourth-best campaign of any player in Bundesliga history, and had Lewandowski not missed three league games of the season, he may have even overthrown fellow Bayern hero Gerd Müller's 40-goal single season record in 1971/72.

In fact, Müller is the sole owner of the better trio than Lewandowski's efforts this term and the only man to have taken home the German top-flight top scorer award more times (seven) than his Polish successor.

And another Bayern legend who knows a thing or two about scoring goals believes Lewandowski has proven once more that he is the best in the business.

"To score 34 goals in one Bundesliga season is an incredible achievement," Rummenigge told the club's website.

"Only Der Bomber Gerd Müller has ever scored more goals in one campaign. I'd like to congratulate and thank Robert Lewandowski. He's the best centre-forward in the world."

Lewandowski's relentless efforts this year not only fired Bayern to an eighth Meisterschale in succession, but they also saw him draw level with Rummenigge on the club's all-time scoring list.

The Bayern chairman's 162 goals in 310 Bundesliga appearances as a player is a return Lewandowski has in fact matched in 120 fewer games for the Munich club (190).

Only Müller has more Bundesliga goals, with his outrageous 365 goals in 427 games a feat unlikely to ever be bettered.

The former Borussia Dortmund man also improved upon his position as the third-highest goalscorer in Bundesliga history, with his 235 strikes overall now only 38 behind second-place Klaus Fischer's 268.

With a further 11 UEFA Champions League goals and four DFB Cup strikes this season - all top of their respective competitions - Lewandowski sits on a total of 49 across the entirety of the year.

He will now have the opportunity to bring up his half century in next week's cup final against Bayer Leverkusen before aiming to satisfy his insatiable appetite for goals even further when the Champions League's latter stages are completed in August.
