Robert Lewandowski out for Bayern Munich against RB Leipzig and set to miss four weeks
Robert Lewandowski will miss Bayern Munich’s top-of-the-table clash with RB Leipzig on Saturday and will be sidelined for up to a month after picking up a knee injury on international duty with Poland.
The Poland captain scored twice in his country’s 3-0 win over Andorra in Group I of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying on Sunday but was then taken off after 63 minutes.
Lewandowski had already officially been ruled out of Poland’s meeting with England at Wembley on Wednesday and returned to Munich, where he underwent further medical examinations by the club doctors.
On Tuesday their diagnosis was confirmed as "a strain of the ligament in the right knee", according to Bayern's official website, meaning the 32-year-old will miss Bayern’s top-of-the-table clash with Leipzig on Saturday, as well as their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie with Paris Saint-Germain, with the first leg taking place on Wednesday 7 April.
Watch: How does Lewandowski score his goals?
Bundesliga leaders Bayern are four points clear of Leipzig with eight games left to play, and the defending champions would have been counting on the in-form reigning world player of the year for their toughest test left. Serge Gnabry or Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting could lead the line if he doesn't make it.
Lewandowski has scored an incredible 35 goals in 25 league matches this season – including a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over VfB Stuttgart last time out.
He had looked set to smash Gerd Müller’s single-season league record of 40 goals from the 1971/72 campaign, and had continued his excellent form this season while on international duty with Poland, having also netted the equaliser in their 3-3 draw in Hungary last week.
