Goals: 0-1 Schlotterbeck 38' (assist: Guerreiro), 1-1 Bülter 50' (assist: Frey), 1-2 Guerreiro 60' (assist: Can), 2-2 Karaman 79' (assist: Bülter)

Despite a raucous home crowd at the VELTINS-Arena, the visitors dominated the opening period, creating a plethora of chances. Julian Ryerson was the first to try his luck, firing just wide from inside the penalty area, before Raphael Guerreiro, Donyell Malen and Marius Wolf were denied by an inspired Ralf Fährmann between the Schalke sticks. Just when it seemed the goalkeeper would keep Die Schwarzgelben out on his own, Nico Schlotterbeck broke the deadlock shortly before the 40-minute mark, firing a fierce effort into the corner. Had it not been Fährmann, who also thwarted Jude Bellingham and Malen once more before the half-time whistle, Dortmund would have been out of sight. The hosts, though, did at least have one big opportunity, Rodrigo Zalazar shooting over the bar when one-on-one with Alexander Meyer after stealing possession from Mats Hummels. Even in the absence of Julian Brandt, Marco Reus and Youssoufa Moukoko, three of their four top goalscorers this campaign in all competitions, Dortmund had more than enough firepower to put their opponents under severe pressure.

Under Thomas Reis, however, this Schalke side is made of stern stuff and, shortly after the interval, they were back on level terms. Michael Frey, in his first Revierderby, played a pinpoint ball across the face of goal, and Bülter was on the end of it at the back post, sending the Royal-Blues supporters into raptures. There was hardly time for the Gelsenkirchen outfit to settle down, though, before they fell behind again when Guerreiro, who provided the assist for the opener, got on the scoresheet himself, planting a drive into the top corner. Edin Terzic's men then came within inches of extending their advantage through Jamie Bynoe-Gittens' shot which flew narrowly wide of the post. That miss ultimately proved costly, with Schalke equalising for the second time with a little over 10 minutes left to play. The hero this time was substitute Kenan Karaman, who could hardly have picked a better time to score his first goal for the club as he placed a header beyond the grasp of Alexander Meyer. Things could have been even worse for Dortmund had Meyer not gotten down low to parry Eder Balanta's effort, which was the last shot on target of the match. The result sees Schalke stay in their pre-Matchday position of 17th, while their eternal rivals now sit two points behind Bayern.
