A brace from Bundesliga 2 top-scorer Simon Terodde and a Marius Bülter effort cancelled out Shinta Appelkamp’s opener as Schalke came from behind to beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-1.

Saturday's late 2. Bundesliga clash opened with Schalke looking more dangerous in the opening stages. Terodde had the first clear chance of the match, but fired his shot straight at Fortuna keeper Florian Kastenmeier. From the resulting corner, the two repeated the action, this time with Kastenmeier’s lightning reactions keeping the scores level. The deadlock would be broken at the other end, however, with Appelkamp collecting a headed pass and lifting the ball coolly over the onrushing keeper and into the net for Düsseldorf. Schalke didn’t take kindly to going behind at home, and they struck back three minutes later. A broken Fortuna move saw the ball come to the feet of Terodde, who played a square pass that his strike partner Bülter slotted home. Bülter was a constant threat throughout the half, with only the woodwork keeping him from picking up a second goal. Fortuna did well to hang on and return to the dressing room with the scores level, as Schalke came back from going behind with a rampant response.

No changes were made at the break, and the matched picked up exactly where and how it had left off. With only one minute played, Drexler crossed the ball into the area and Terodde displayed true poacher instincts to poke it into the net and put Schalke into the lead. Both sides fought hard to claim the fourth goal, but neither could find a way through. USA striker Matthew Hoppe came off the bench with a quarter of an hour to find a goal and secure the three points for the Royal Blues. In the end, security would have to wait until the final minute of regulation time. Terodde grabbed his second of the night and sixth of the season to make sure that the home fans had plenty to sing about.

• The Royal Blues had not won any of their last three matches against Fortuna. Defender Salif Sane scored twice the last time they beat them, with the goals coming in a 4-1 DFB Cup third-round success at home in February 2019.
• Despite a four-point haul from their two Bundesliga matches against Schalke in the 2019/20 season, Düsseldorf were relegated from the top flight at the end of that campaign.
• Hennings, who turned 34 on Saturday, scored four goals in two matches when these sides were last in the same division. The Fortuna frontman got a hat-trick as the visitors came from behind three times in a 3-3 draw in Gelsenkirchen in November 2019. He then equalised in the return match, which Düsseldorf won 2-1 in May 2020.
• Poland international Dawid Kownacki got his first goals for the visitors in their most recent away win at Schalke. The former Sampdoria attacker was twice on target in a 4-0 Bundesliga victory in March 2019.

Matchday 5 round-up:

Nuremberg 2-1 Karlsruhe
Goals: 1-0 Tempelmann (50’), 2-0 Shuranov (74‘), 2-1 Batmaz (82‘)

Both teams had made unbeaten starts to the season after four games, but it was Nuremberg who emerged with that status intact on Friday of Matchday 5. The two teams exchanged blows but without landing a telling punch in the first half, but Der Club then forged ahead through Lino Tempelmann’s first senior goal before Erik Shuranov took advantage of a failed clearance to double up for the Bavarian side with a quarter of an hour to go. Substitute Malik Batmaz got one back in the final 10 minutes for Karlsruhe. Philipp Hofmann had a chance to snatch a point in added time but could only strike the post as Nuremberg made it two wins and three draws from five.

Sandhausen 0-2 Ingolstadt
Goals: 0-1 Bilbija (39’), 0-2 Kaya (87‘)
Promoted Ingolstadt got their first win back in Bundesliga 2 thanks to a 2-0 win at Sandhausen on Friday night. The away side controlled proceedings at the BWT-Stadion am Hardtwald but it was a corner that gave them the lead, as Sandhausen failed to clear a ball into the six-yard box and Filip Bilbija was able to prod home. Things remained tight into the second 45 minutes, with Ingolstadt happy to sit back and pick off their hosts. They finally wrapped up the three points in the closing moments when substitute Fatih Kaya turned in Dominik Franke’s cross into the box and move Ingolstadt level with their opponents at the bottom end of the table on four points.

Werder Bremen 3-0 Hansa Rostock
Goals: 1-0 Ducksch (pen. 39'), 2-0 Ducksch (53'), 3-0 Rapp (90'+4)

Werder Bremen picked up their second win of the season in convincing style, with a Marvin Ducksch double downing Hansa Rostock at the Weser Stadion. Ducksch gave Werder the lead from the penalty spot five minutes before the break after Julian Riedel handled the ball inside the area. He almost added a second early in the second half when his strike hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down on, but not over the goalline. He only had to wait a few more minutes for his and Bremen's second, though, beating Markus Kolke inside his near post after excellent work by Romano Schmid. Rapp wrapped up victory deep in stoppage time, turning the loose ball in after Niclas Füllkrug's effort was parried by Kolke.

Darmstadt 4-0 Hannover
Goals: 1-0 Pfeiffer (21’), 2-0 Tietz (45’+1), 3-0 Schnellhardt (70’), 4-0 Krajnc (87’)

Darmstadt deservedly beat Hannover with a pair of goals in each half. Luca Pfeiffer was the danger man from the beginning and nearly put the home side ahead with only five minutes played. He would, however, have to wait fifteen more minutes to get his name on the scoresheet. Just on the stroke of half-time, Pfeiffer turned provider for his strike partner Phillip Tietz, who hammered his shot into the top corner. A third goal would have to wait until the 70th minute, when Fabian Holland worked hard to get to the byline and cut the ball back for Fabian Schnellhardt to stroke home. To compound Hannover’s difficulties, Luka Krajnc headed the ball into his own net from a corner. Hannover now find themselves one place from last place.

Heidenheim 0-0 Hamburg

Before Saturday's match, Heidenheim and Hamburg were right next to each other in the 2. Bundesliga table on five points. The match began as a cagey affair with neither team wanting to make a mistake. HSV eventually gained the upper hand in terms of possession, but could not convert their dominance into clear-cut chances. Before the break, both teams were denied by the woodwork and had to be content with a goalless draw at half time. Hamburg resumed their push for an opener with good work down the flanks, whereas Heidenheim looked dangerous from set pieces. In the end, though, the two clubs remained as inseparable on the pitch as they are in the standings. Hamburg end the day in ninth place, ahead of Heidenheim on goal difference alone.

Holstein Kiel 3-0 Erzgebirge Aue  
Goals: 1-0 Porath (29’), 2-0 Arp (37’), 3-0 Mees (81’)

The clash between last season’s high-flyers Holstein Kiel and Erzgebirge Aue saw two teams trying to score their first victory of the 2021/22 season. The home side dominated possession and had the lions share of the chances and they made it count. Finn Porath grabbed the first with a header before Bayern Munich loanee Fiete Arp, who had come on as a first-half substitute, doubled the lead before half-time. The home fans would have to wait late into the second half before they could breathe easy, knowing the three points were theirs. With less than ten minutes remaining, substitutes Lewis Holtby and Joshua Mees combined to make the win secure. The result leaves Aue at the foot of the table, still chasing that first win.

St. Pauli 2-0 Regensburg
Goals: 1-0 Burgstaller (74'), 2-0 Burgstaller (89')

St Pauli brought an end to Regensburg's 100% start to the season with Guido Burgstaller scoring both goals to take the Hamburg club to within two points of the league leaders. The hosts had the better of the first half at the Millerntor, albeit without creating any major openings. They continued to dominate in the second half with Burgstaller hitting the post minutes before breaking the deadlock with a low shot into the bottom right-hand corner. The expected response from Regensburg, who came into the game having won four in a row, including a 4-1 win over Schalke last weekend, failed to materialise and Burgstaller sealed St. Pauli's victory from close range, from Daniel Kyereh's cut-back.

Dynamo Dresden 0-3 Paderborn
Goals: 0-1 Michel (8'), 0-2 Pröger (24'), 0-3 Pröger (26')
Red card: Becker (90'+1)

Paderborn gained revenge for defeat to Dynamo Dresden in the first round of the DFB Cup by ending the eastern Germany club's unbeaten start to the season with a 3-0 win. After Christoph Daferner wasted two gilt-edged early chances for Dresden, Paderborn took the lead with Sven Michel's header from Justvan's technically excellent cross. Pröger doubled Paderborn's lead with a shot from an acute angle before adding his second and Paderborn's third from distance just minutes later. Michel nearly added a fourth on the hour mark, but there was no way back for the hosts, who tasted defeat for the first time this season, and lost Becker to a red card in stoppage time to add insult to injury.
