Hamburg maintained their 100 per cent record at home in the second tier this season with a fifth victory at the Volksparkstadion arriving thanks to first-half goals from Jonas Meffert and Robert Glatzel. An error from visiting goalkeeper Jonas Urbig led to Meffert pouncing for the game's opener, while Glatzel's sixth goal of the season before the break put daylight between the teams. Home goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes stopped a second-half spot-kick from Branimir Hrgota to cap a fine day for HSV, who joined city rivals St. Pauli at the top of the table.
Paderborn 2-2 St. Pauli
Goals: 1-0 Muslija 8', 1-1 Eggestein 48', 1-2 Irvine 78', 2-2 Bilbija 82'
Pauli were denied a fifth win on the bounce by a Paderborn side that extended their own unbeaten run to five games. The hosts stunned the division leaders when Florent Muslija netted from inside his own half on nine minutes and it took the Hamburg-based side until after the break to respond. Johannes Eggestein headed in from a corner soon after the restart, while the same player was involved in Pauli's second when his shot came back off a post to leave visiting captain Jackson Irvine with a simple finish. Unbowed, Paderborn stuck to their task and rescued a point when Sirlord Conteh found Filip Bilbija for the equaliser.
Karlsruhe 3-0 Schalke
Goals: 1-0 Stindl 22', 2-0 Matanović 37', 3-0 Matriciani 74' (o.g.)
Garaets' tenure started in the worst possible fashion as Schalke lost 3-0 away at Karlsruhe, a result that leaves them five points adrift of guaranteed safety. The new head coach made seven changes to the side beaten 2-1 by Hertha Berlin before the October international break, but they had little impact as Lars Stindl opened the scoring midway through the first half. Schalke did have an opportunity to restore parity in the 35th minute through Bryan Lasme, but it went begging, and within 120 seconds, the hosts were two to the good thanks to Igor Matanović. The three points were secured when Henning Matriciani put the ball into his own net, condeming Die Königsblauen to a fourth successive defeat.
Fortuna Düsseldorf 4-3 Kaiserslautern

Fortuna Düsseldorf leapfrogged Kaiserslautern into fourth place after a phenomenal comeback that helped to make the their opening to their 'Fortuna For All' intiative a highly memorable one. Goals from Richmond Tachie and Marlon Ritter either side of Jamil Siebert's own goal had FCK cruising shortly after the half-hour mark. However, when Ao Tanaka pulled a goal back after 37 minutes, something special filled the air inside the Merkur Spiel-Arena. Matthias Zimmermann's deflected effort pulled the hosts to within one, while the same player then set up Felix Klaus for an equaliser that went in off the post. Amazingly, Tanaka then popped up to score the game's winning goal, sending the home supporters - attending for free - into ecstasy.
Nuremberg 3-1 Hertha Berlin
Goals: 0-1 Prevljak 15', 1-1 Castrop 57', 2-1 Leistner 72' (o.g.), 3-1 Hayashi 84')
Red cards: Kempf 67', Álvarez 74'
Nuremberg bounced back from their 5-1 defeat away at St. Pauli to defeat Hertha Berlin 3-1. The visitors broke the deadlock with a quarter-of-an-hour on the clock through Smail Prevljak - Die Alte Dame's first shot on goal - but that was as good as it got for the side from the capital. It took a while for the hosts to equalise, but they finally did so shortly before the hour mark through Jens Castrop. Marc-Oliver Kempf's dismissal did not help Hertha's cause, and things went from bad to worse when Toni Leistner netted an own goal shortly after. Iván Márquez Álvarez's red card at least levelled things up in terms of players, but Nuremberg remained on top and put the game to bed when Daichi Hayashi struck in the final 10 minutes.
Elversberg 3-0 Eintracht Braunschweig
Goals: 1-0 Stock (20’), 2-0 Wanner (43’), 3-0 Boyamba (90’+6)

Eintracht had a Johan Gómez goal ruled out for a foul in a rare opportunity for the visitors. Elversberg wrapped things up late on through Joseph Boyamba.
Hannover 2-1 Magdeburg
Goals: 1-0 Leopold (11’), 1-1 Atik (87’), 2-1 Teuchert (pen. 61’)
Hannover made it three straight wins at home with a deserved victory over Magdeburg. Enzo Leopold put the hosts in front early on before Baris Atik levelled shortly before the hour mark with a dipping effort. However, Hannover were given the chance to restore their advantage immediately when Daniel Elfadli handled in the box. Cedric Teuchert made no mistake from the penalty spot as the Reds moved to within two points of the automatic promotion places.
Osnabrück 0-2 Wehen Wiesbaden
Goals: 0-1 Lee 9', 0-2 Heußer 70'
Wehen Wiesbaden won this battle of the recently promoted teams to leave their hosts down in the division's bottom three. Thijmen Goppel set up Hyun-Ju Lee for the game's opening goal in the ninth minute, while Florian Stritzel in the Wiesbaden goal had a game to remember thereafter, the custodian denying the home side with a string of fine saves. Robin Heußer's 70th-minute free-kick subsequently sealed the points for Markus Kauczinski's men.
Hansa Rostock 1-3 Holstein Kiel
Goals: 1-0 Kinsombi 18', 1-1 Arp 33', 1-2 Remberg 56', 1-3 Becker 58'
Red cards: Johansson 82'
Holstein Kiel moved up to the relegation play-off spot thanks to a comeback victory away at Hansa Rostock. Christian Kinsombi opened the scoring for the home side but, against the run of play, Jann-Fiete Arp buried a fantastic volley shortly after the half-hour mark to level things up. Two headers in two minutes in the second half from Nicolai Remberg and Timo Becker put Kiel in a commanding position and, although Carl Johansson was sent off with eight minutes left on clock, that was not enough to derail Marcel Rapp's men.
