Bundesliga 2: Records and milestones in the 2024/25 season

A number of players and clubs could rewrite history during the 2024/25 Bundesliga 2 season, which kicks off on 2 August.

Greuther Fürth are the Bundesliga 2 team par excellence! 1194 games and 1771 goals in the second tier put them ahead of all others in the division's history. They will build on those tallies in the 2024/25 season, and could bring up the 500-win milestone with 477 second-tier victories to their name so far. St. Pauli are second on that list with 457 wins, but - of course - will be in the top flight in the new season.

One of the sides Pauli have replaced in the top flight, Cologne, have the chance of matching a record currently held by Bochum. The latter dramatically staved off the drop last season as the Billy Goats were automatically relegated. It means Cologne could equal Bochum's all-time best mark of four immediate returns to the top flight if new coach Gerhard Struber can get things right in the Cathedral City.

No player has scored more goals in Bundesliga 2 than Simon Terodde with 177, but the man known as ‘TORodde’ retired at the end of last season. He’s some way ahead of Dieter Schatzschneider, who got his 153rd during the two-division Bundesliga 2 era. The current player with the most goals at this level is Hamburg's Robert Glatzel on 84 – some way shy of the record. The striker will no doubt add to his tally this term as HSV push for promotion once again. It’s also unlikely anyone will race up behind and catch him, with defensive midfielder Tobias Kempe next on the list with 64.

As clinical as Terodde was over many years in Bundesliga 2, nobody has enjoyed a campaign quite like Horst Hrubesch. He holds the single-season scoring record with 41 from 1978/79. As well as Glatzel, the other two joint-top scorers from last season, Haris Tabaković and Christos Tzolis, are also still in action and may have an eye on that historic total.

At club level, records may be harder to come by. Hertha Berlin had an almost perfect season in 1980/81 as they won 31 out of their 34 fixtures, scoring an impressive 123 goals in the process. It will take some achievement, akin to Bayer Leverkusen’s Invincibles in the Bundesliga last term, to match that. Hertha themselves have hit the reset button with a new coach in Cristian Fiél.

Here's a brief look at some of the other records that could tumble:

Karlsruhe are just a goal away from their 1500th Bundesliga 2 strike (only Fürth, Pauli, Hannover and Fortuna Cologne have previously reached this milestone)
Hertha will crash through the 1000-goal barrier as they start the season on 995. Eintracht Braunschweig (952) and Fortuna Düsseldorf (943) could do the same.
Schalke (481) and newly promoted Jahn Regensburg (442) start in search of their 500th BL2 goal.
Enrico Valentini of Nuremberg could rack up his 300th second-tier appearance - he's currently on 278. Leart Paqarada (247), Jonas Meffert (242), Fabian Holland (231) and Marcel Franke (231) could reach the 250 mark.
Darmstadt coach Torsten Lieberknecht is just two games away from his 300th on the sidelines, while Fürth's Stefan Leitl is close to his 200th (currently 187).
