With Shakhtar playing their 'home' matches in the Champions League at Schalke's Veltins-Arena due to the Russo-Ukrainian War, Bayern didn't have too far to travel - but they did take the long road to victory. Kevin scored early with a well-taken strike past stand-in goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, the Israeli making his Champions League debut in the absence of injured captain Manuel Neuer. The Ukrainian champions' lead lasted all of six minutes, though, as Konrad Laimer levelled with an emphatic finish after good work by Thomas Müller and Michael Olise. Leroy Sané had a goal ruled out for an earlier offside and Olise shot wide, before Vincent Kompany's charges forged ahead on the stroke of half-time. Jamal Musiala waltzed past a clutch of Shakhtar shirts and crossed for Müller - filling in for the injured Harry Kane - to nestle a sweet strike into the bottom corner.

Bayern took their time to get going after the restart, with Shakhtar stopper Dmytro Riznyk not made to work until the 58th minute, when Leon Goretzka chanced his arm from range. That sparked the Bundesliga leaders into life as Joshua Kimmich sent over a cross for Musiala to convert on the volley, only for the goal to be chalked off due to an infringement on the goalkeeper by substitute Mathys Tel. Bayern eventually gave themselves daylight with 66 minutes gone. Substitute Sascha Boey was tripped inside the area, and Olise confidently dispatched the ensuing penalty for 3-1. Brilliantly taken Musiala and Olise goals added the gloss as Bayern claimed a fourth win in six league-phase games to climb back into the eight automatic last-16 qualification places for the first time since Matchday 1.

Match stats

  • Bayern have reached at least the round of 16 in every edition of the Champions League since 2002/03, winning the trophy twice in that period (2012/13 and 2019/20).
  • After Kane, Musiala is Bayern's next biggest attacking threat in 2024/25 with 13 goals and five assists in all competitions.
  • Olise scored his eighth and ninth Bayern goals - his third and fourth in this season's Champions League.
  • Müller has 55 goals to show for his club record 156 Champions League appearances.
  • Bayern recorded their first away Champions League win of the season.
  • Shakhtar have now lost seven 13 Champions League meetings with German opposition (W2, D4). The 7-0 defeat to Bayern was their heaviest in European competition.

Full-time: Shakhtar 1-5 Bayern

It's all over in Gelsenkirchen and Bayern have picked up a third consecutive Champions League victory against Shakhtar, doing so in some style. A dazzling second-half performance took the game away from the Ukrainian side, with the goals after the break coming courtesy of an Olise brace and another from Musiala. The win takes Bayern up to eighth in the table, albeit there are still matches to play tomorrow, but after the two defeats to Aston Villa and Barcelona, Vincent Kompany's side have turned things around and are still well in contention to finish in the top eight.

Bayern net their fourth!

Musiala goes on a great solo run before he is brought down in the box and is demanding a penalty. He remains on the ground, but it turns out to work in his favour. The play continues, and the ball comes back to him in this exact spot, and so he rises to his feet, dummies a shot at first to create space around a Shakhtar defender and then coolly converts into the bottom corner.

Picking up where we left off

Things have slowed down now after a quickfire start to the second half. Just as was the case in the first 45 minutes, Bayern are dominating possession but are unable to create any gilt-edged chances.

Three corners

The ball falls at the feet of Traoré following a corner, and his shot appears threatening until Upamecano nods it behind for another corner. The next set-piece causes Bayern some problems, as Bondar gets to the ball, but the away side are able to deal with the situation and put it out for another corner, from which nothing comes.

Bayern play it quickly forward from the kick-off. Sané registers the first shot of the second half, but the effort is well wide of the target.

Half-time: Shakhtar 1-2 Bayern

After Kevin's goal gave Shakhtar a shock lead just six minutes into the game, the German record champions quickly fired back through Laimer and controlled the play for large parts of the opening 45 minutes. Despite the home side looking threatening on the counter, it was Bayern who found the next goal through veteran and makeshift striker Müller, ensuring Bayern are in front at the interval.

Bayern lead just before the break!

Sané wins the ball high up the pitch and forwards it to Musiala, who beats several defenders before playing it across the box to Müller, who fires a low left-footed shot towards goal. The effort wrongfoots the keeper and sails into the bottom-left corner.

Hosts go close!

Shakhtar get forward quickly after Bayern lose the ball. Kevin is through on the left once again and charges towards goal, before squaring it to Sudakov on the edge of the box, who shoots just wide of the right post!
40'

Pass or shot?

It gets played to Sané, who is in plenty of space, on the left side of the Shakhtar penalty area. He takes a second to get his shot away and then fires towards goal - but was he actually trying a clever pass? Whatever he was trying to do, it has resulted in the ball trickling past the right post and out for a goal kick.

Plaudits from his teammates

Goretzka congratulates Laimer after he netted Bayern's equaliser - but they're not looking to stop there.
35'

Off target!

Guerreiro charges down the right-hand side once more, this time finding a teammate with his cross. It comes to Olise in the centre of the penalty area, and he picks his spot, but shoots just over the bar!
32'

Ball in the net, but still 1-1!

Laimer pinches it off the home side in the penalty box and lays it off to Müller, who passes it on once again to Sané. However, before the ball has rolled into the back of the net, the referee Meler blows his whistle. Laimer was judged to have unfairly won back possession, meaning the goal doesn't count.
28'

Here come Bayern

Guerreiro's cross in from the right doesn't find anyone initially, but the visitors retain possession, as Laimer looks to drive into the penalty box from the left-hand side. However, as he does so, the ball bounces up onto his hand, and referee Meler awards a foul.
26'

Under control

Zubkov wants to speed his side's play up and sends the ball down the right touchline, but the ball gets shepherded out for a goal kick. After a shaky start, Bayern are really starting to get a firm grip on this game.
25'

Megs!

Musiala puts his skills on show as he knocks it through the legs of a Shakhtar player. The home side will need to keep tabs on Bayern's No. 42 should they wish to take anything from this match.
22'

Lacking precision

Müller finds himself in plenty of space on the right and looks to fire a flat cross into the box. However, it goes in between both Musiala and Sané, meaning neither of them are able to get on the end of the promising cross.
19'

Deploying the high press

Bayern apply the pressure to snatch the ball off Shakhtar. Olise and Müller combine well down the right, and it ends up at the feet of Musiala, who has a go from the right side of the edge of the box. His shot is deflected over the bar by Bondar, and nothing comes from the resulting corner.
16'

Close from Sané

The Germany international tries his luck from range, but his shot from the right is too central and is easy pickings for Riznyk.
14'

Pushing for a second

Bayern are shifting the ball from left to right as they try to break through again, but they are struggling to find a gap. They've given up possession too easily on two or three occasions in the last few minutes.

Straight back in it!

All square in Gelsenkirchen! Kimmich plays the ball to Müller, who tries to play Olise in behind the Shakhtar defence. He cleverly flicks it back into the path of Laimer, who nails his shot into the top-right corner!

More on that Bayern side

Vincent Kompany has made three changes to the side that began the 4-2 win over Heidenheim on Saturday. Two of these are straight swaps, with Konrad Laimer starting at right-back in place of Sascha Boey and Leon Goretzka replacing Aleksandar Pavlović in midfield. Meanwhile, Raphaël Guerreiro has slotted in at left-back instead of Alphonso Davies, who has not been named in tonight's squad due to a hamstring injury, which allows Michael Olise to move out on to the wing and for Jamal Musiala to return to the starting XI, playing in behind striker and captain Thomas Müller.

Marino Pusic: We're highly motivated

Speaking ahead of a tough fixture against the Bundesliga leaders, coach Marino Pusic spoke on his team's motivation for tonight's game: "You do not have to motivate the players specifically for such matches. When you face one of the best clubs in the world, it is a motivation in itself. Of course, I will say some things about how to play this game and what to do, but I think everybody is highly motivated anyway"

The story so far - Bayern Munich

Bayern have not had things go entirely their way in the new-look Champions League, with defeats at Aston Villa and Barcelona. Successive 1-0 home wins against Benfica and PSG means they are now up in 13th on nine points though and well on course to make the knockout stages as one of the top 24.

The story so far - Shakhtar Donetsk

Four points from their first five Champions League matches puts the Ukrainian club two positions outside the play-off spots in 26th. A 2-1 win over Young Boys and a 0-0 draw at Bologna are their two positive results so far.
