The stats behind Thomas Müller’s record career with Bayern Munich and Germany

In a career spanning over 16 years, Thomas Müller has seen and won it all with boyhood club Bayern Munich and Germany, cementing his place among world football’s greats with records that may never be broken.

1 – Müller won his only FIFA World Cup at the 2014 edition in Brazil. He also received the Silver Boot as second-top scorer (five goals) and Silver Ball as second-best player (behind Lionel Messi).

2 – Müller is a two-time UEFA Champions League winner (2013 and 2020), having also finished as runner-up in 2010 and 2012. He started all four finals and scored in the 2012 shootout defeat at the Allianz Arena.

2 – Müller has also lifted the UEFA Super Cup (2013 and 2020) and the FIFA Club World Cup (2013 and 2020) twice each. The 2020 titles were part of Bayern’s historic sextuple.

5 – Müller has scored five senior hat-tricks in his career. Four have come for Bayern (two each in the Bundesliga and DFB Cup), plus one for Germany in the 2014 World Cup against Portugal.

6 – The number of times Müller has lifted the DFB Cup. Only Bastian Schweinsteiger has done so more often (seven).

17 – The number of seasons Müller has played in the Bundesliga. Only Manfred Kaltz (for Hamburg), Karl-Heinz ‘Charly’ Körbel (for Frankfurt) and Klaus Fichtel (for Schalke) have played in more different seasons for a single club in this competition (all 19).

21 – The number of assists Müller provided in the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign to set a new league record and equal Lionel Messi’s record across Europe’s top five leagues.

25 – Müller’s squad number throughout his time in the Bayern first team. He explained he was first given it by a kitman on his arrival in senior training “probably expecting me not to be around too long. He was wrong”.

27 – Müller’s favourite opponent over his career is Wolfsburg, who he has beaten 27 times (out of 32 meetings). They are also his favourite in terms of goals scored (15).

33 – The number of major trophies Müller has won in his career, making him the second-most decorated player in German football history after the now retired Toni Kroos (34). He’s lifted 32 of those with Bayern, plus the 2014 World Cup with Germany.

36 – Müller’s goal tally in the DFB Cup, ranking him eighth all time and only three behind Robert Lewandowski, Hannes Löhr and Klaus Allofs in fifth.

36 – The number of yellow cards Müller has received over his 712-game Bayern career. He has been sent off twice (one straight red, one second yellow), missing only five matches through suspension.

66 – The number of games Müller has played in the DFB Cup – the most of anyone in a Bayern shirt and sixth on the competition’s all-time list. He has been on the winning side in 57 of those.

105 – The number of games Müller has won in the Champions League. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has been victorious more often (115).

131 – Müller’s total of caps for Germany from his debut in March 2010 to July 2024. Only Lothar Matthäus (150) and Lukas Podolski (137) have represented the country more times.

150 – Müller’s tally for Bundesliga goals to rank 17th in the league’s history and fourth in the Bayern standings behind Gerd Müller (365), Lewandowski (238) and Rummenigge (162).

152 – The number of games Müller has played in the Champions League proper (plus two in qualifiers), which saw him surpass Xavi Hernández of Barcelona and set a new competition record for appearances for a single club in the 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb in September 2024.

218 – How many assists Müller has laid on during his Bayern career, nearly 100 more than next best one-time Bundesliga players Franck Ribéry and Marco Reus.

245 – The total number of goals Müller has scored in all competitions for Bayern’s senior team. Only namesake Gerd (566) and Lewandowski (344) have more for the Bavarians.

342 – Müller boasts the most games won in Bundesliga history, one ahead of long-time teammate Manuel Neuer.

476 – Müller’s appearance total in the Bundesliga, making him Bayern’s record holder in the top flight (ahead of Sepp Maier’s 473). Only 17 players have featured more times in the Bundesliga. Just Fichtel (477 for Schalke), Michael ‘Ata’ Lameck (518 for Bochum), Kaltz (581 for Hamburg) and Körbel (602 for Frankfurt) have played more games for a single club.

712 – Müller overtook Maier as Bayern’s record appearance holder with his 710th senior game for the club on Matchday 2 of 2024/25 at home to Freiburg. He has now stretched that record further to 712, which is 105 more than any other outfielder (Gerd Müller with 607). Since his debut in August 2008, Bayern have played 822 competitive fixtures.

2008 – The year in which Müller made his senior Bayern debut, coming on as a substitute in place of Miroslav Klose in the 79th minute of a 2-2 draw against a Hamburg side featuring Vincent Kompany on 15 August. He was just a month shy of his 19th birthday at the time.

2010 – Müller’s first World Cup, having earned only two caps before the tournament, where he won the Golden Boot for top scorer (five goals, plus three assists) and Best Young Player awards.

2011 – The year in which he first coined his now famous description of his playing style – Raumdeuter – in a mid-season training camp.

2025 – His current contract is set to run until the end of the 2024/25 season, following his most recent extension in December 2023.
