UEFA Nations League: Germany to face Italy in the quarter-finals
Germany have reached the quarter-finals of the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League after topping Group A3 and Julian Nagelsmann’s men now face Italy for a place in next June’s finals tournament.
Germany ensured they would claim first place in their section with a resounding 7-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the penultimate group game, also progressing beyond the Nations League group stage for the first time in four editions. They closed out the group stage with a 1-1 draw away to Hungary to finish unbeaten.
5 reasons why Germany will win the Nations League
The draw for the quarter-finals, which has been introduced in the Nations League for the first time in the 2024/25 edition, has determined that Germany will now face Italy in the quarter-final stage. The two sides last met in the 2022/23 edition of the UEFA Nations League, with Germany beating Italy 5-2 in Mönchengladbach.
The League A knockout stage draw determined the four quarter-final ties between the group winners and runners-up, as well as the pairings for the semi-finals next June.
As one of four group winners, Germany are seeded, giving them home advantage in the second leg. The two legs are scheduled to be played on 20 and 23 March 2025.
For the semi-final draw, another pot was prepared, containing four placeholders that represent the quarter-final winners. As quarter-final 3, the draw determined that Germany would face the winners of Denmark vs Portugal in the semi-finals, should they beat Italy.
Spain vs. the Netherlands and France vs. Croatia complete the quarter-final line-up, with one of those sides awaiting Germany in the final if they make it that far.
The League A semi-finals are set to take place on 4 and 5 June, with the match for third place and final to follow on Sunday 8 June. The host nation for the finals tournament will be determined once the four semi-finalists are known.
