UEFA postpones 2020 European Championship until summer 2021
UEFA has reacted to the coronavirus pandemic by postponing the European Championship planned for this year until next summer (11 June to 11 July).
The decision was taken by the UEFA Executive Committee on Tuesday following a crisis summit attended via video link by representatives of all 55 member associations, national leagues and the European Club Association (ECA). The tournament was set to be played across 12 countries between 12 June and 12 July this year, with Munich as the venue in Germany.
In view of the rapid spread of the virus, almost all European leagues are currently suspended. The DFL Ordinary Assembly on Monday had already decided that no games will be played in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 until at least 2 April. In a statement to that effect, the DFL said: “The suspension of sporting competition will remain in place initially. For now, this concerns Matchday 27 of both leagues. In the last week of March, a decision is to be reached on how to proceed with reference to the match schedule. To this end, a further Ordinary Assembly is planned, at which it will then be possible to take both further developments in general and UEFA’s decision regarding a possible postponement of the European Championship into account. The DFL does not expect that it will be possible to resume playing matches on the first weekend in April.”
