Bayern may have gone into the weekend on a high after making the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, but Union quickly reminded them why they haven't had things always go their way in this season's Bundesliga, with a Christopher Trimmel cross causing havoc in the Bayern area in the opening minute before running out of play. Kane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting hit early efforts as Bayern racked up an advantage on the shot count, which told when a smashing Leon Goretzka finish from a Mathys Tel pass thrust the visitors in front on the half-hour mark. Although Union posed a threat on the break through the pace of Benedict Hollerbach, and Manuel Neuer was called upon to save a testing Robin Gosens volley, Bayern continued to create chances. Kane then doubled the Bavarians' lead at a perfect time, just before the break, with a fabulous strike directly from a free-kick.

Bayern continued to be too hot for Union to handle after the restart, with Müller racing to meet a Choupo-Moting cross and lash a volley in at the far post. The one-way traffic continued as Tel smashed straight into the net after taking a forward pass from Kane. Müller soon completed his brace by applying a glancing header to Goretzka's swirling cross. Kane had a fine shot saved, before Yorbe Vertessen found the side netting and Mikkel Kaufmann had a shot save in rare chances for a consolation. With the hosts' confidence shot to pieces, the final phases were akin to a training exercise as Bayern calmly passed the ball around and developed attacks at will, although a tidy Vertessen finish in stoppage time put Union on the scoresheet.
