Bayern Munich to face Red Bull Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League last 16
Bayern Munich have been drawn against Red Bull Salzburg in the round of 16 of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League.
A technical error meant the original draw, where Bayern were paired with Atletico Madrid, was declared void and UEFA decided that it would be done again in full.
Bayern completed a perfect group stage for the second time in their history, topping Group E with 18 points from their six games, ahead of Benfica, Barcelona and Dynamo Kyiv.
The Bundesliga champions were therefore seeded as one of the eight group winners for the draw in Nyon and will play their second leg against the Austrian champions at the Allianz Arena.
It’s the shortest possible away trip for the Munich club, who have faced Salzburg twice before. Those produced comprehensive Bayern wins in last season’s group stage, prevailing 6-2 in Austria and 3-1 back in Germany.
Champions League round of 16 draw in full:
Red Bull Salzburg vs. Bayern Munich
Sporting Lisbon vs. Manchester City
Benfica vs. Ajax
Chelsea vs. Lille
Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester United
Villarreal vs. Juventus
Inter Milan vs. Liverpool
Paris Saint-Germain vs. Real Madrid
The first legs are scheduled for 15/16/22/23 February, with the second legs on 8/9/15/16 March. UEFA will confirm the exact dates and kick-off times in due course.
The draw for the UEFA Europa League play-off round also took place on Monday.
There are four Bundesliga teams represented in the competition, but only two were involved in this first draw. Since Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen won their respective groups, they are straight through to the round of 16.
There is a play-off round to be played before then, which features the eight runners-up of Europa League groups and the eight third-placed teams from the Champions League.
Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig fell into the latter category and have been paired with Rangers and Real Sociedad respectively as they seek to join their fellow Bundesliga clubs in the final 16.
BVB have met Rangers eight times before in European competition, but not since Borussia progressed on penalties in the third round of the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup.
Leipzig’s only previous meeting with Spanish opposition saw them beat Atletico 2-1 in the 2019/20 Champions League quarter-final.
UEFA Europa League play-off round in full:
Sevilla vs. Dinamo Zagreb
Atalanta vs. Olympiacos
RB Leipzig vs. Real Sociedad
Barcelona vs. Napoli
Zenit St. Petersburg vs. Real Betis
Borussia Dortmund vs. Rangers
Sheriff Tiraspol vs. Braga
Porto vs. Lazio
Dortmund and Leipzig will play their first legs at home on Thursday, 17 February. The return legs are on 23 February.
The winners of the play-off ties will join the eight Europa League group winners in the last 16. Frankfurt and Leverkusen feature there with Lyon (France), Monaco (France), Spartak Moscow (Russia), Galatasaray (Turkey), Red star Belgrade (Serbia) and West Ham United (England). They will be the seeded teams in the round of 16.
Teams from the same national association cannot be drawn together at that stage, meaning Dortmund and Leipzig could not face Frankfurt or Leverkusen. That draw takes place on 25 February, with the ties on 10 and 17 March.
