Oscar Højlund
Age: 19 (born 4 January 2005)
Club: Eintracht Frankfurt
Position: Central midfielder
Country: Denmark (34 youth caps)
Key stats
Højlund is fresh off a breakout season in Denmark. The 6'0" midfielder made 10 Superliga appearances in 2023/24, as well as six in the UEFA Champions League group stage, and a further four during Copenhagen's run to the quarter-finals of the Danish Cup. He also made his debut for the Denmark U19s, before being handed the captain's armband in November 2023. The former U17 and 18 international had been on the Copenhagen books since the age of 13, initially working his way up through the ranks of sister club Hørsholm-Usserød Idrætsklub. He could become the third Danish national to play in the Bundesliga for Frankfurt, after Jesper Lindström and Frederik Rönnow.
Plays a bit like: A younger Jude Bellingham
Before Jude Bellingham was top-scoring in LaLiga with Real Madrid, he was running the midfield in more of a box-to-box role for Borussia Dortmund. Højlund certainly shares the combative and athletic style that made England's star man such a hit in the Bundesliga between 2020 and 2023.
Did you know?
Oscar isn't the only Højlund making his way in professional football. Twin brother, Emil, also broke through at Copenhagen on 2023/24, while Rasmus - two years his siblings' senior - currently plies his trade at Manchester United.
Oscar and Rasmus were minutes from playing against each other in the 2023/24 Champions League groups, but Frankfurt's new man entered the Copenhagen fray shortly after the Man United forward had been taken off.
That didn't stop them from having a little catch-up, though, as Rasmus gate-crashed his little brother's televised post-match interview.
What they're saying
"Oscar is a talented player, who already has experience of European club competition. He's a great fit for us, with his fantastic footballing qualities." - Frankfurt sporting director Timmo Hardung
"Oscar is an energetic and dynamic central midfielder who can run from end to end. He reads the game well, which we really benefit from together with his good technique. He has attacking vision as well as a defensive toughness. In that sense he has an overall package that has great potential." - Copenhagen development director Sune Smith-Nielsen
