Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich came from behind to beat VfL Wolfsburg 3-2 at the Volkswagen Arena in the Belgian's first Bundesliga game as head coach.

VfL Wolfsburg 2-3 Bayern Munich
Goals: 0-1
Musiala 19' (assist: Boey), 1-1 Majer 47' (pen.), 2-1 Majer 55' (assist: Wimmer), 2-2 Kamiński 65' (own goal), 3-2 Gnabry 82' (assist: Kane)

Kompany's Bayern reign started last week with a convincing 4-0 victory over Ulm in the first round of the DFB Cup but, after seeing title rivals Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig all record victories in Matchday 1, he will have been eager for his team to show their title credentials early. On the whole, his side impressed in the opening period as they forced new Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara into several important saves. Serge Gnabry was particularly lively, twice testing the shot-stopper before firing wide. Yet, while Grabara was alert to stop Joshua Kimmich's header and also got to a Harry Kane attempt, there was nothing he could do stop Jamal Musiala from tapping into an empty net following some good Sacha Boey play down the right. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, struggled to cause their opponents many problems before the interval, although they weren't far away from stealing possession in very dangerous areas as Bayern looked to play out from the back.

Despite Der Rekordmeister's positive opening 45 minutes, they were pegged back within two of the restart. Tiago Tomás drove into the box and was felled by Boey just as he was about to pull the trigger, leaving referee Daniel Siebert with little choice but to point to the penalty spot. From 12 yards, Lovro Majer made no mistake, sending Manuel Neuer the wrong way in the process. The Croatian almost had a second before the 50-minute mark when his low shot struck the foot of the post before bouncing to safety, but he didn't have to wait long to finally complete his brace, slotting Patrick Wimmer's cross into the corner. In response, Grabara tipped a Musiala effort over the bar before Gnabry was thwarted once more. However, Bayern's pressure eventually told, with Jakub Kamiński heading into his own net following Kane's nod at the back post. The Englishman would have later got himself on the scoresheet had Kamiński not produced an incredible block to parly atone for his previous error, but he did turn provider by finding Gnabry with a pass that the Germany international duly dispatched. Wolfsburg swarmed forward in search of a late point, with Neuer saving from Mattias Svanberg, but Bayern stood firm.
