Wolfsburg 1-2 Bayern Munich
Goals: 0-1 Musiala 33' (assist: Müller), 0-2 Kane 43' (assist: Müller), 1-2 Arnold 45'+1 (assist: Maehle)
Mattias Svanberg tested Manuel Neuer early, but it was one-way traffic from Bayern thereafter. Thomas Müller headed over from a set piece, Leroy Sané sent a free-kick at Koen Casteels and Raphäel Guerreiro fired wide, before the defending champions converted their dominance into goals. Müller cut in off the right and crossed for Jamal Musiala to head in the first from close range. Mr. Bayern - fresh from penning a new deal with his boyhood club - then set up Kane for a fabulous 20-yard finish for 2-0. Wolfsburg had been comfortably second best, but gave themselves a fighting chance on the stroke of half-time when Maximilian Arnold fired a rising drive past Neuer.
Wolfsburg were much improved after the restart, largely keeping Kane and Co. in check whilst periodically threatening as an attacking force. Substitute Rogério pinged a teasing ball into the Bayern box on one such occasion, but Alphonso Davies was able to pick off the threat. Bayern's advances were even more sporadic, with Moritz Jenz preventing Sané from doing more with a promising Müller pass and Sané too casual when collecting Dayot Upamecano's raking ball into the danger zone. Aleksandar Pavlović drove wide from 18 yards, before Arnold stung the palms of Neuer as Bayern secured a win that keeps them four points behind leaders Bayern Leverkusen.
Match stats
- Only Gerd Müller (20 in 1968/69) and Lewandowski (22 in 2020/21) had previously scored at least 20 goals in a first half of the season. Kane can go better than both with two more goals in his Bayern's next outing.
- Müller assisted his fifth and sixth Bundesliga goals of the season.
- Musiala scored his third Bundesliga goal of the campaign - and fifth in seven Bundesliga meetings with Bayern. He's Bayern's youngest player to reach Bundesliga 100 games.
- Niko Kovač took charge of 65 matches as Bayern coach between July 2018 and November 2019. Across the 2018/19 campaign, he won the Bundesliga, DFB Cup and Supercup.
- In 53 Bundesliga meetings, Wolfsburg have won just four times to Bayern's 42 victories.
- The last Wolves win in this fixture came courtesy of a 4-1 victory at home in January 2015. Since then, Bayern have won 15 and there have been just two draws.
