With Wolfsburg winless at home this season and Dortmund having lost three of their last four competitive outings, the match was something of a slow burner with neither side wanting to make any costly mistakes. It burst into life in the 14th minute though, when Nico Schlotterbeck strode forward into midfield, shimmied his way past a marker and threaded a brilliant pass through for Maximilian Beier. The summer signing only was left with only goalkeeper Kamil Grabara to beat but saw his shot crash off the post. That was the best chance of a cautious first half, with a powerful Kevin Wimmer drive that fizzed narrowly wide the best Wolfsburg could muster before the break.
The match followed a similar pattern after the restart: plenty of midfield battles but little by way of goalmouth action. But when they did come, they were invariably for Dortmund. Serhou Guirassy headed over from a Pascal Groß cross early on and had another header saved by Grabara a short time later, while Julian Brandt skewed a fiercely struck shot over the bar after a jinking run by Jamie Gittens. There were no goals before the 90 minutes were up though, sending the game into extra time. That very nearly changed just seconds into extra time when ex-Dortmund man Salih Özcan crossed for Tiago Tomas, whose first-time shot grazed the crossbar. The contest looked poised to be settled on penalties, when substitute Wind found the bottom corner after the BVB defence had failed to deal with a cross from the left.

Bensebaini is cautioned after bringing down Tomás right on the edge of the penalty area, but the free-kick comes to nothing. One minute of additional time at the end of the 120...
Late drama at the Volkswagen-Arena. Dortmund don't deal with Maehle's left-wing cross. Gerhardt wins the header and it drops for Wind who, surrounded by BVB shirts, pings a shot into the bottom corner.

Unhappy chappy
Schlotterbeck fires goalwards from inside the box. His shot bounces up off Maehle's leg, possibly hitting his hand, but the referee is unmoved. He's then booked for his protestations.
Bensebaini stops Wind from connecting with a cross from the left, the Algerian getting his shoulder in the way at the expense of a corner, which comes to nothing.

Jinking run
Campbell runs at the Wolfsburg defence, but is blocked off by two defenders after trying to move the ball onto his stronger left side.
Kick-off!
Still no way through
It's been entertaining and a little fiery - but still we await the breakthrough. Another 15 minutes for either side to find a winner, before the lottery that is a penalty shoot-out...
A Dortmund corner sails across the face of goal. Nmecha connects at the back post, his rising drive deflecting off an outstretched boot and a stray hand before Wolfsburg clear.

Blocked!
Kobel is out quickly to block at the feet of Maehle, just as the Wolfsburg left-back threatened to pull a pass back for a teammate. Özcan heads the ensuing corner off target. What a story that would have been against his former club!
90'
Change in midfield
Majer walks off to be replaced by ex-Dortmund midfielder Salih Özcan. The fourth official's board has just indicated eight minutes of added time. Will we see a winner, or are we set for extra-time...?
It doesn't look good for the Wolfsburg man, who's down receiving treatment. He's only just come back from an ankle problem...
86'
Wind!
The Wolfsburg sub blazes over after connecting with a free-kick from the right in the Dortmund box. He was leaning back and surrounded by BVB shirts - those ones are never easy.

OK for now
Nmecha's back on - perhaps that tumble wasn't as serious as first feared. He is cradling his left arm, though...
Groß sends over an inviting cross for Gittens, whose shot is blocked by Baku. Wolfsburg are readying a change...
64'
Grabara at full stretch
Really good goalkeeping by the Wolfsburg custodian to push Guirassy's towering header over the crossbar. The resultant corner is cleared, but BVB are in the ascendancy here...
61'
Tactical foul
Wolfsburg's captain is booked for deliberately bringing down Malen, stopping a possible BVB break in the process. You don't get to 426 senior appearances for one club without learning a trick or two...
He's moving gingerly, but will try to run off that nasty challenge. Could have been a lot worse for him...
56'
Dangerous challenge
Nmecha is very lucky to only receive a caution for a studs-up tackle on Wimmer. It wasn't intentional, which is perhaps why the Dortmund midfielder is still on the pitch - that and the absence of VAR.
He can't get over the ball following a strong run and cross from Groß, who has really impressed as BVB's makeshift right-back.
47'
Routine save
Malen gets away from his man, but his low shot is too close to Grabara.

No personnel changes...
... but will we see a goal in the second half, or is this one heading for extra-time and penalties?
Kick-off!
Half-time: Wolfsburg 0-0 Dortmund
Chances at both ends, including one off the woodwork from BVB's Beier. It's been a great watch - stay tuned for more all-Bundesliga action in the DFB Cup second round...
Dardai's cross form the right is blocked out by the diving Kobel, the Swiss stopper's handy work pushing it way from the unmarked Wimmer. Inches in that.
40'
Relief for Dortmund!
Amoura's acrobatic clearance from a corner isn't the best, but Wolfsburg manage to win the ball back and break. Their Algerian No.9 leads the charge, playing a teasing ball across goal that neither Majer nor Wimmer can turn goalwards.
37'
Chance not taken
Dortmund have men over as Brandt drives into Wolfsburg territory. He has time and space, but rushes a pass that's picked off on the edge of the area and hoofed clear. There was more in that attack!
32'
Kobel to the rescue!
The Dortmund No.1 gets down really well at his near post to save Amoura's snap-shot. It pops back up for Wimmer on the other side of the box, but his goal-bound effort is deflected clear.
28'
Power of the punch
Grabara comes off his line to confidently punch clear a Groß free-kick with Guirassy lurking - albeit in an offside position.
24'
Handball?
Wolfsburg get away with one as Guirassy rises in the box to head wide off a stray arm. There's no VAR at this stage in the cup, though, so play goes on.
High on energy
It's been an entertaining start to the game in Wolfsburg. The two Bundesliga rivals are really having a good go. BVB certainly don't look like a side that hasn't won away all season.
The Austrian attacker pulls away from former Wolfsburg midfielder Felix Nmecha, before driving narrowly wide of Kobel's right-hand post from range. Dortmund's goalkeeper barely moved.
16'
So close!
Dortmund are beginning to find their rhythm as Bensebaini's long ball sends Malen scampering up the right. He crosses into the six-yard box, where Guirassy steers wide via a crucial deflection.
13'
Woodwork!
So close from Beier, who does everything right as he tears away on the counter. The Germany international shifts inside and has Grabara beaten from 18 yards, but his shot cannons back off the far post to safety.
9'
Denied
Dortmund get lucky as Schlotterbeck concedes possession on the edge of his area, before recovering to block Wimmer's rushed attempt. The referee's whistle then sounds to bail out the visiting defence. That could have been dangerous.
5'
Confidence levels
BVB are just about shading the possession count, but both sides have enjoyed some confident, albeit fleeting, spells on the ball.
2'
Wide!
Dortmund win back possession in midfield and immediately look to attack. Guirassy travels a long way before having a shot blocked. Malen, who was momentarily unmarked, then sees his scuffed follow-up deflected wide. Bensebaini's initial delivery is cleared for another corner; his second is punched clear by Grabara.

Elsewhere
No top-flight casualties so far in round two, with holders Leverkusen and Augsburg beating Bundesliga 2's Elversberg and Schalke, respectively. RB Leipzig won 4-2 against Bundesliga rivals St. Pauli, while Bundesliga 2 outfit Karlsruhe got the better of fourth-tier Kickers Offenbach.
More on those teams
Hasenhüttl makes four changes to the team that drew 0-0 with St. Pauli at the weekend. Salih Özcan, Yannick Gerhardt, Tiago Tomás and Jonas Wind drop out, with Maxi Arnold, Lovro Majer, Bence Dardai and Patrick Wimmer recalled. Dortmund are missing a natural right-back, forcing Şahin to break from his preferred 4-3-2-1 formation. Julian Ryerson and Waldemar Anton miss out, while Marcel Sabitzer is only fit enough for the bench. Pascal Groß, Emre Can and Max Beier are their replacements.
Wolfsburg's injury problems are not as extensive, with Aster Vranckx being their most recent casualty; he will still be unavailable for their clash with Dortmund. Kevin Paredes is still out with a foot problem while Sebastiaan Bornauw is currently ill.
Injury problems
Dortmund's injury list continues to grow, with Waldemar Anton and Julian Ryerson picking up knocks in their recent loss to Augsburg. They are also currently without Niklas Süle, Yan Couto, Giovanni Reyna, Karim Adeyemi and Julien Duranville.
Previous winners
Wolfsburg won this trophy for the first time in 2015, beating Dortmund 3-1 in the final thanks to goals from Luiz Gustavo, Kevin de Bruyne and Bas Dost. The Black-Yellows, though, have lifted the Cup on five separate occasion, most recently in 2021 courtesy of a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig.
These two last met in February, when there was a share of the spoils.
Wolfsburg team news
There are also several issues for Hasenhüttl to contend with. Amongst those who will not feature are Aster Vranckx, Kevin Paredes, Rogério, Patrick Wimmer, Mattias Svanberg and Bartosz Białek, while Sebastiaan Bornauw's illness is expected to keep him out as well.
Şahin has numerous absentees to contend with ahead of this clash. Karim Adeyemi, Yan Couto, Julian Duranville, Giovanni Reyna and Niklas Süle are all unavailable, while Julian Ryerson and Marcel Sabitzer are also expected to be on the sidelines for this one. The latter two, at least, could be back in contention for the weekend's Bundesliga clash with RB Leipzig.
Ralph Hasenhüttl's men were held to a goalless draw away from home by the league's newcomers.

Despite taking the lead, Dortmund fell to a 2-1 defeat away to Augsburg.
Need for optimism
With just one win in their last five in the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg will see this cup tie as an opportunity to restore confidence and optimism into the team. While recent performances have shown promise, they have also shown a lack of control and defensive frailty.
Ralph Hasenhüttl: "Dortmund have an incredible amount of quality"
The Wolfsburg coach was well aware of the challenge his team will face against Dortmund on Tuesday night, telling the club's official website: "I've seen a lot of good performances, a team with an incredible amount of quality. With Guirassy up front, they have a center forward who can decide a game on his own. They are above average in many positions...Even against Real, they played a great game and it's always easy to explain why it wasn't enough in the end, but I think they did a lot of things right."
Despite their disappointing 2-1 loss against Augsburg, coach Nuri Sahin is determined to reach the next round of the DFB Cup by beating Wolfsburg, stating: "Since Sunday, all my thoughts have been about getting through to the next round in the cup and winning away."
Patrick Wimmer fired Wolfsburg past fourth-tier Koblenz in the opening round, while Dortmund recorded a comfortable 4-1 win over Lübeck (also of Germany's fourth division).
