World Cup stars of the Bundesliga: Bayer Leverkusen's Jarell Quansah
In joining Bayer Leverkusen last summer, Jarell Quansah became the latest English talent to try their luck in Germany, and the composed 23-year-old centre-back is now reaping the rewards and hoping for big things with Thomas Tuchel's England.

How was his 2025/26 season?
The likes of Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho have made their way to Germany in search of regular minutes in recent years and have had huge success. Quansah sought to do the same last summer by leaving Liverpool, and he hasn’t looked back. The Englishman enjoyed a real breakout season at Leverkusen, nailing down his place in the club’s back three. He appeared in 28 of his club's 34 Bundesliga matches, scoring four times - including a goal on his Bundesliga debut in the 2-1 defeat to Hoffenheim.

What he brings to the national team
With his ability to step out of defence with the ball and his talent for winning crunching challenges, Quansah offers England a quality central defensive option while providing competition at right-back, where he made his England debut under Thomas Tuchel in November 2025. He also featured in the same position as he made his World Cup debut in the Three Lions' 2-0 group stage win over Panama, although he was forced off in the second half with an injury.
What his coaches say
“I have a lot of trust in Jarell. I see his talent, but I see the package. He is tall, he is fast, he is strong in build-up. He is strong in the air. He's slighty ahead [of Trent Alexander-Arnold].” - Tuchel
“He's an intelligent defender and a real presence. He's really developed a lot and is an important player for us.” - Leverkusen head coach Kasper Hjulmand
