The WOW Virtual Bundesliga is back!

The WOW Virtual Bundesliga debuts new EA SPORTS FC in-game mode to kick off 2026-27 season with a strong community focus and enhanced competition.

The WOW Virtual Bundesliga (VBL) kicks off the 2026-27 season with an enhanced competition programme. The season kicks off on 15 October 2026 with the VBL Club Championship by WOW, which will be contested in the tried-and-tested Showdown mode. On 28 October 2026, the revamped single-player competition – now known as the VBL Player Championship by WOW – will begin. In both competitions, the EA SPORTS FC community takes centre stage more than ever before.

“We are delighted that the new VBL season is getting underway. With the VBL Club Championship by WOW and its special connection to the clubs in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, we have a competition that remains unique worldwide. This season, we have, above all, further developed our second championship, the VBL Player Championship by WOW, in collaboration with EA SPORTS. A key component of this is the in-game mode in EA SPORTS FC 27, which has been further developed by EA SPORTS. The fact that the Bundesliga remains the only league in the world to be represented directly within the game with its own mode is something very special and offers our community the unique opportunity to become part of the VBL themselves and compete for the German Championship,” says Felix Rentschler, Head of Virtual Bundesliga at the Bundesliga.

VBL Player Championship by WOW: New in-game mode in EA SPORTS FC 27

As part of the rebranding of the single-player competition, the ‘VBL Open’ mode familiar from previous editions will be replaced by a new in-game mode in EA SPORTS FC 27. In the Ultimate Team mode, which is popular with the community, all eligible players will then be able to compete against one another with their own personalised team, made up of players from the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, and by selecting one of the 36 clubs.

The mode will be available in the game for the first time from the end of October and will subsequently run over four fixed periods until February 2027, at the end of each of which the top 15 players will qualify for the play-offs. Further places in the VBL Player Championship by WOW play-offs – which serve as a preliminary stage to the grand final of the singles competition – will be allocated via selected wildcards or wildcard tournaments. The VBL Player Championship by WOW final tournament will take place on 16–17 April 2027 in front of a live audience at the XPERION Hamburg. Both finalists of which will secure a direct spot at the FC Pro World Championship, taking place in Summer 2027.

“Our partnership with the Bundesliga is focused on the continued growth of the Virtual Bundesliga, and as we enter this next chapter of competition, we’re excited to make the VBL even more accessible and engaging for our community. The redesign of the in-game mode and the relaunch of the VBL Player Championship by WOW are designed to bring the competition closer to our players than ever before, ensuring that competitors at every level have a clear and fair path to prove themselves and earn their chance to compete on the biggest VBL stages,” says Monica Dinsmore, Head of Esports at EA.

Kick-off on 15 October – with spectators at all offline knockout rounds of the Showdowns

The VBL Club Championship by WOW is also entering its ninth season in the 2026-27 campaign. The competition kicks off on 15 October 2026 with the first online rounds and will once again bring together the best teams from the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 on their ‘Road to Hamburg’.

As in the previous season, five Showdowns will determine the path to the final. Following the conclusion of the first online preliminary round, the first offline knockout round of the first Showdown will take place on Sunday 25 October 2026 at the Allianz Arena in Munich. There, the clubs will face each other in person for the first time this season and earn vital points towards qualifying for the grand final tournament. The five Showdowns will be open to spectators and will feature a range of community activities and interactive experiences.

The remaining offline knockout rounds of the Showdowns will follow on a monthly basis: on Saturday 14 November 2026 in Berlin at the XPERION on Alexanderplatz, on Sunday 20 December 2026 in Dresden at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, on Friday 22 January 2027 in Cologne at the XPERION, and finally on Sunday 21 February 2027 in Dortmund at the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.

The highlight of the season is the VBL Club Championship by WOW Finals on 12–13 March 2027 at the XPERION Hamburg, next to the main railway station. As well as prize money totalling 87,500 euros, the clubs will be competing for further sporting qualifications: eight places in the DFB ePokal and the chance to qualify for the eChampions League.

Further information on the 2026-27 season will be published in the coming weeks on virtual.bundesliga.com and on the VBL’s social media channels.
