Full-time: Atleti 0-2 Bayern

The Bundesliga champions get back to winning ways in the Champions League after an impressive display in Madrid. Karl notched the opener just before the hour mark, having capitalised on a critical Le Normand error. Laimer then secured all three points for Bayern in the 74th minute, drilling the ball past Oblak from a tight angle. FCB remain unbeaten in Europe, with matches against Lille, Slavia Prague, Man Utd and Real Betis still to play.

Added time

There will be an additional three minutes of play. Bayern are closing in on the three points...
89'

Another Bayern sub

Boey will get a late run-out after replacing Laimer.
89'

Hancko blazes over

He can't quite keep the ball down after being picked out by Giuliano's floated cross. It hasn't been Atleti's night so far.
87'

Too high from Kane

The England captain attempts another long-range shot, this time from around 25 yards out. The less said about that effort, the better.
84'

Atleti threat contained

The hosts are currently showing no signs that they can turn the game on its head. On the contrary, it is Bayern who continue to pose a bigger threat.
81'

Goal ruled out

Bayern think they have a third goal after Pubill heads the ball into his own net from a corner. However, the referee rules it out due to Upamecano fouling the Atleti defender in the process.
78'

Straight at Neuer

Giuliano has a free header at the back post from a corner kick, but the winger can't generate any power on the ball. Neuer is able to hold onto it with relative ease.
77'

Double substitution

David and Mendoza replace Barrios and Álvarez for the final moments.

Laimer makes it 0-2!

Bayern are closing in on a famous win in the Spanish capital! Kane lays the ball into the path of the advancing Laimer on the right side of the Atleti area. He takes a touch and absolutely rifles the ball beyond Oblak - who got nowhere near it. Bayern lead by two clear goals with less than 15 minutes to go.

Off the crossbar!

Where is Upamecano going!? The defender goes on a mazy run and ends up on the edge of the Atleti box with time and space to shoot. His effort takes a deflection off Pubill and loops over Oblak. However, the ball crashes against the crossbar and is then scrambled away by the Atleti defenders.
71'

No luck for Kane so far

He has had four shots at goal tonight, but none have tested Oblak in the Atleti net.

First Bayern change

Brown replaces goalscorer Karl for the final 20 minutes or so.
65'

Not enough power

Álvarez threads the ball through to Llorente, who skips away from his marker with a lovely pirouette inside the Bayern box. However, his shot on goal, which lacks power and conviction, is easily held by Neuer.
63'

Atleti push forward

The goal has completely changed the complexion of this tie. All of a sudden, it is Atleti who are dominating the ball.
60'

Triple change

The hosts have brought on Koke, Lookman and Lee in a bid to try and turn the tide. Sørloth, Baena and Le Normand - who was at fault for Bayern's goal - all make way.

Kimmich booked

He picks up a yellow card after preventing Atleti from launching a counter attack.

Bayern take the lead!

The pressure had finally told! Le Normand takes far too long to clear the ball inside his own area, allowing Karl to nip in and lift the ball over the advancing Oblak. It's a gift for the youngster and Bayern, but they are good value for their lead after a strong start to the second half.

52'

Not far away

Kane is the latest Bayern player to try his luck from range. His powerful, driven effort flashes narrowly wide.
51'

Giuliano to the rescue

Laimer swings a cross towards the back post, which is headed behind by the switched on Giuliano. Had he not have gotten to the ball, Upamecano had a simple tap-in...
50'

Sørloth warned

The referee awards a free kick to Bayern after Sørloth strikes Kimmich in the face with his arm. The forward gets away with just a warning on this occasion.
48'

Oblak denies Kimmich

The Bayern midfielder pulls the trigger from around 20 yards out. Oblak scrambles across his goal line to palm the shot away to safety. Bayern have made a quick start to the second period.
47'

Back underway!

The ball is rolling for the second half. Can Bayern find a winner here?
Kick-off!

Half-time: Atleti 0-0 Bayern

Neither side has been able to find a breakthrough so far. Despite dominating possession, Bayern have lacked a cutting edge in the final third, with Kane going closest to scoring towards the end of the first half. Atleti have had their moments on the counter, but you rather get the feeling the hosts would already settle for a point if you offered it to them.

44'

Corner for Bayern

Olise whips it in from the right, but Sørloth rises highest to head the ball away at the near post.
41'

Almost from Laimer

A floated cross to the back post is met by the head of Laimer, who lays the ball into the path of Karl on the right side of the Atleti box. The teenager isn't quite able to work some space for a shot at goal and is quickly dispossessed.
39'

Easy work for Oblak

Bayern get a free kick in a dangerous area, but Kimmich's delivery only succeeds in finding Oblak's gloves. Once again, the end product just isn't there from the visitors.
36'

Stanišić strikes from range

He gets the ball out of his feet and shoots a yard or so wide of Oblak's right post.

High press

Bayern are attempting to suffocate their opponents with a very high press. At times, Upamecano looks like he is playing as a forward, such is his insatiable desire to win the ball back in Atleti's half.
30'

Both sides have had decent opportunities to score

Nevertheless, it remains goalless in Madrid.

Kane can't convert

The Ballon d'Or winner is picked out by Laimer's floated cross from the right. However, the ball arrives just behind Kane inside the six-yard box, meaning he has to readjust his body and attempt a first-time volley. He gets good contact on the ball but shanks his shot a yard or so wide of Oblak's left post.
26'

Wasteful from Stanišić

Olise races away on the counter attack with just one defender ahead of him. He lays the ball into the path of Stanišić, whose shot at goal is well blocked by Pubill. Bayern are finding more and more space to operate in here...
23'

Over from Karl!

That was a great opportunity to take the lead! Upamecano does superbly well to win the ball back for Bayern just outside the Atleti penalty area. The defender shifts the ball to Kane, who in turn finds Karl in acres of space inside the box. However, the youngster can't keep his shot on target and it sails into the stand behind the goal.

Twenty minutes in

Banks will be pleased with his side's ball retention so far, even if their end product has left much to be desired. Atleti, meanwhile, are seemingly content to try and hit Bayern on the counter attack - a strategy which has worked fairly well in the opening stages.
18'

Bayern re-establish control

The visitors have tried to slow the tempo of the match since Barrios' chance. Once again, they're knocking the ball around with confidence, although the final pass is currently missing.
15'

Chance from a corner

Kimmich's clearance at the near post is poor, as he plays it straight to Barrios just outside the Bayern box. The Spaniard then drills a shot goalwards, but it takes a wicked deflection on the way through and flashes just over Neuer's crossbar.
12'

Oblak gets away with one

The Atleti goalkeeper attempts a long clearance, but instead blasts the ball into the face of Stanišić. Luckily for the home side, the ball rolls away from goal.
10'

Olise threatening

The winger has looked very lively down the right side so far, with several Atleti defenders often being dragged over to help contain him.
6'

Good response

Bayern have responded well to that Álvarez effort. They are controlling the ball in Atleti's half, patiently looking for any defensive gaps to exploit.
3'

Early chance!

The home side play a nice give-and-go to advance forward. Álvarez then cuts onto his right foot inside the Bayern box and tries to pick out the far corner, but the ball flashes a few inches wide.
2'

And we're off!

Atleti get the game going in their familiar red, white and blue home strip. Bayern, meanwhile, are in their changed white and navy away kit.
Kick-off!

A historic milestone

Neuer is set to make his 164th Champions League appearance tonight - a record for a German player - moving him up to third in the competition's all-time list, behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Casillas.

More on that Atleti side

By contrast, Atleti head coach Diego Simeone has made three changes to the side that defeated Deportivo over the weekend. Giuliano, Le Normand and Sørloth all come into the side in place of Hjulmand (absent from the matchday squad), Lee and Lookman (both on the bench). Former Leverkusen man Grimaldo is set to start at left-back.

More on that Bayern side

The visitors have made five changes to the side that drew with Dortmund in Der Klassiker last time out. Neuer is back and replaces Urbig (bench) in goal. Tah, Stanišić, Karl and Bischof also start in place of Saibari, Gnabry (both injured) Kim and Pavlović (both on the bench).

Watch: More from Danks and Kane

Danks on facing Atleti

"It’s going to be a top-of-the-table clash; we’ve been keeping an eye on Atlético’s progress, and defence remains at the heart of their game. However, they’re also very good with the ball. We want to play attacking football, we want to have possession and make the most of our chances. I’m solely focused on the players who’ve travelled with us, so they can show what they’re capable of. We’re confident, but it’ll be neck and neck with Atlético."

Kane poised to sign new Bayern deal

"I'd say it's matter of days," Kane told media on Monday, with contract talks ongoing since August. "There's been good conversations over this weekend and today as well. I know I keep saying we're close, but we are extremely close now."

Diego Simeone on Harry Kane

"Firstly, I’d like to congratulate him on his well-deserved Ballon d’Or. It’s incredible – I’ve always admired him. As he’s matured over the years, he’s found his best form without losing his eye for goal. He knows what the team needs. His talent is a real asset to the game and to the young players who look up to him, because he leaves a legacy showing that you can achieve great things through hard work."

History in sight for Neuer

Should Manuel Neuer feature, the legendary goalkeeper would surpass Lionel Messi and former Bayern great Thomas Müller by making his 164th UEFA Champions League performance - which would take him third on the all-time appearance list. He trained with Bayern on Monday after missing Saturday's Der Klassiker with a foot issue.

Kane on Ronaldo's heels

Harry Kane's remarkable UEFA Champions League record was a factor in him winning the Ballon d'Or, and he has the chance of making more history in the competition in Madrid. Kane has scored in all of his past 10 appearances in the competition, and is on the brink of equalling the record of scoring in 11 successive matches set by Cristiano Ronaldo between 2017 and 2018 (for Atleti's local rivals Real Madrid).

Olise off

Bayern suffered a third injury late in the Klassiker, as Michael Olise needed to be replaced. The French attacker was able to take part in training on Monday, however.

Atlético win in LaLiga

Atleti continued their strong start to the LaLiga campaign as they defeated Levante 2-0 away from home, with former Bayer Leverkusen man Alejandro Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone netting the goals. As such, the Madrid-based outfit keep up the pressure on league-leaders Barcelona.

Watch: Bayern Munich 2-2 Borussia Dortmund - previous match

Despite twice taking the lead, Bayern were pegged back on both occasions by BVB as the Klassiker ended with the spoils shared. As such, the two teams remain locked on 18 points at the top of the table.

Gnabry and Saibari see Der Klassiker cut short

Both Bayern attackers Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari (pictured, middle) were forced off through injury within the first half hour of their clash with fierce rivals Borussia Dortmund, and Bayern confirmed they will be out for the time being with thigh and ankle injuries, respectively.

Bayern in front

Bayern beat Atlético 4-0 at home before drawing 1-1 in Madrid in the 2020/21 group stage. The Bavarians lead the overall head-to-head record in Champions League matches, with four wins to Atleti's two (plus two draws).

Winless record

Atleti's Ademola Lookman (D1) and Alexander Sørloth (D1, L1) have previously faced Bayern in RB Leipzig colours

Watch: Harry Kane's footballing odyssey

Less than a week after scoring his fourth Champions League goal of the current campaign in the draw with Arsenal, Harry Kane claimed football's ultimate individual honour: the Ballon d'Or. The Bayern and England man scored a staggering 73 goals for club and country last season - an extraordinary feat made all the more remarkable by the journey he took to reach the summit of the game.

Atleti: the story so far

Atlético also go into Matchday 4 in a seeded knockout phase play-off position. Diego Simeone's side have four points from three games following a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, a 2-1 win over Manchester United and a 1-1 draw at VfB Stuttgart.

Bayern: the story so far

Champions League semi-finalists last season, Bayern kicked off the league phase with a 5-0 win over Norway's Bodø/Glimt at the Allianz Arena, before drawing 2-2 with both Viking and Arsenal. With five points on the board, the six-time European champions are 14th in the standings, a point adrift of the automatic last-16 qualification places.
