Full-timeL Schalke 3-1 Nuremberg

Schalke deservedly win against Nuremberg. With a strong first half, the Royal Blues laid the foundation early on for their first victory of the year. Goalscorers Sylla and Karaman in particular shone once again and secured important points for the Miners. Nuremberg did improve after the break, but didn't take their chances and against a strong Schalke keeper in Heekeren. As a result, Nuremberg continue to stall with a fourth consecutive away defeat.

Never again is always! 21st 'Remembrance Day in German Football'

80 years ago, on 27 January 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated. German football has been commemorating this event for more than 20 years, remembering the people persecuted, deported and murdered by the Nazis on match days around 27 January.

Karius in the squad

The young talents Vitalie Becker (19 years old) and Aris Bayindir (18) are included in the squad for the first time in Bundesliga 2. However, a very experienced player is also in the squad for the first time: keeper Loris Karius, who boasts 95 Bundesliga matches, 30 appearances in the Premier League and 13 Champions League fixtures.

Mohr celebrates comeback

Last week he was brought on as a substitute, but today Tobias Mohr is in the starting XI for the first time since Matchday 12 (replacing Antwi-Adjej), when Mhr set up both goals in a 2-0 home victory against Regensburg.

Donkor for Murkin

Another injury setback for Schalke, as Derry John Murkin is forced to miss his first match of the season. This allows Anton Donkor to make his first league start for Schalke 14 substitute appearances. So far, the new signing from Braunschweig has only started once, in the 3-0 Cup defeat in Augsburg.

New system for Nuremberg

Defensive midfielder Flick comes into the team for suspended striker Mahir Emreli. Miroslav Klose is likely to make tactical changes today with Stefanos Tzimas as a lone striker instead of the recently used 3-5-2 formation.

Flick starts

Just one change for Nuremberg: Florian Flick, who scored the winning goal as a substitute against Karlsruhe last week, moves into the starting XI at his former stomping ground. Flick played twelve Bundesliga and 27 second division matches for Schalke, winning the second division title with the Gelsenkirchen club in 2022.

The Veltins-Arena is ready

Miroslav Klose on Schalke

"At Schalke, with a sold-out stadium, you have to play good and brave football to quieten the fans. Over 5,000 of our supporters will be with us, and it will be a fantastic atmosphere!"

Kees van Wonderen on Nuremberg

"We're expecting a team that's in good form and plays very good football. They have the confidence to play in tight spaces. They have good coordination with each other - both with and without the ball."

Advantage Nuremberg

In the first leg, the Club came from behind to win 3-1 after trailing 1-0, securing their first points in the second division against Schalke on their fifth attempt - Schalke had won all four previous encounters in the Bundesliga 2.

Strong home record

Schalke have won all of their last six home matches against Nuremberg, scoring 20 goals in the process. In their last 16 competitive home games against the Club, the Royal Blues have achieved 13 wins and three draws. Nuremberg's last away victory in Gelsenkirchen was over 30 years ago (a 2-1 win in September 1993 in the Bundesliga, in which Sergio Zarate scored twice against Jens Lehmann).

Tale of the tape

Schalke (seven) and Nuremberg (nine) have won a combined 16 league titles as the sides that once dominated German football. Between 1934 and 1937, they championship was a contest between themselves, with Schalke winning the title twice during this period through final victories over Nuremberg. Both traditional clubs are also connected by one of the oldest fan friendships.
