Conclusion
Karlsruhe started well in the first half with goals from Heußer and Kaufmann, while Düsseldorf struggled to get into the game. Towards the end of the first half and especially after the break, Fortuna took control. First, Pejčinović pulled one back, then Kownacki equalised from the penalty spot, and in the end, he scored the much-celebrated winning goal for the visitors!

Brace for Kownacki!
Following a corner from the right taken by Appelkamp, Kownacki gets a fairly unchallenged header. Into the net, shirt off, time to celebrate! Karlsruhe can't believe it.

Penalty for Fortuna!
Kownacki is challenged by several opponents and goes down. Haslberger immediately points to the spot! Weiß receives a yellow card for dissent.

Karlsruhe fighting back
Fortuna may have had a lightning start to the second half, but since then, KSC have outdone them 6-2 in terms of shots on goal.

Double substitution for Fortuna
Kwarteng stays down after a challenge and is subsequently substituted, accompanied by the medical staff. Schmidt replaces him. Additionally, Zimmermann comes on for Rossmann.
71'
Solid defence
First, the KSC defence heads Fridriksson's cross out of the penalty area, then Jensen and Wanitzek defend together against Kwarteng. Fortuna are pushing a bit more, but currently can't break through the home side's secure defence.

Counter-attack opportunity
After a corner from KSC, the home team lose the ball and Fortuna get a chance to counter-attack. In the end, it's Pejčinović again, but his shot is also deflected for a corner. Van Brederode clears it out of the danger zone.

Beifus!
Wanitzek's cross finds Beifus in an advanced position, and he gets a strong header on the ball only to see it crash back off the post! Kastenmeier was at full stretch and may have got a touch on it.

Strong start to the year for van Brederode
A goal last week against Darmstadt, and now now he has provided the assist to keep Fortuna in the game. The Dutchman is off to a good start in 2025!
52'
Heußer!
The scorer of Krlsruhe's second dribbles into the penalty area from the right, fails to get a shot off and then goes down. Once again, Haslberger does not point to the spot.

Pejcinovic makes an immediate impact
Substituted on, first touch of the ball - and straight into the net!
47'
The super sub strikes!
Düsseldorf has space, lots of space, and they exploit it ruthlessly. The impressive van Brederode plays it out to the left for Pejčinović, who shoots low with his left foot from the left side of the penalty area. Franke does his utmost, but can't prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net.
46'
We're back under way!
Düsseldorf kick off the second half. Daniel Thioune brings on Pejčinović to freshen up the defence, with Hoffmann making way. KSC also make a change, Rapp replacing Burnić.

Half-time: Karslruhe 2-0 Fortuna Düsseldorf
Right on the half-time whistle, Düsseldorf's Jóhannesson curls a beautiful left-footed shot against the right post. Nevertheless, KSC lead 2-0 at half-time, having started vigorously and reaped the rewards: two shots on goal, two goals, Kaufmann and Heußer finding the net.

Counter-attack from KSC!
Schleusener suddenly breaks free, but after a long sprint, he scuffs his shot well wide.
45'
Better in the game
Düsseldorf have now clearly established themselves in KSC's half and keep delivering dangerous crosses into the box - but Karlsruhe are managing to clear for now.
42'
Advantage?
Fortuna need nine seconds fewer (11.8) than Karlsruhe (20.3) to regain possession after losing the ball. In theory, the visitors are quicker in thought, yet Karlsruhe appeared fresher, especially at the start, and thus lead 2-0.

Another attempt
Kwarteng tries a low shot from distance. The ball would have rolled past the goal, but KSC keeper Weiß still goes for it, resulting in Fortuna's fourth corner. Same story: the visitors fail to create any danger from this set-piece as well.
37'
Haag!
Now Fortuna come down the left flank for a change, with Kwarteng laying it off to Haag, whose left-footed shot with the outside of his boot grazes the side netting. Düsseldorf are starting to bare their teeth!
35'
No taker
Kwarteng spots Fridriksson positioned on the right, but his low cross finds no taker.
33'
First attempt!
Finally, some action! Van Brederode presses high and wins the ball, squaring it for Kownacki. However, the resulting shot lacks power and is an easy catch for Weiß.

Similar picture
As was the case after the opening goal, KSC have retreated into their own half and are allowing their opponents to come forward. However, Fortuna aren't really accepting the invitation. Another corner has been won, but no danger comes from it.
29'
Blocked
After a free-kick, Schleusener gets a shot off from a central position in front of goal, but this time the Düsseldorf players block it more successfully than before.
28'
Unusually shaky
That's nine goals conceded in the last three matches - Düsseldorf's defence has been uncharacteristically insecure of late.

Another yellow card for KSC
Wanitzek slides in and brings down Jóhannesson at the halfway line.
22'
Karlsruhe ice-cold!
Their second shot on goal also finds the net! Again they come down the left side, Burnić leaving the ball for Heußer, who simply fires from 16 metres out. Hoffmann and Siebert both throw themselves into the shot, the latter deflecting it unstoppably past Kastenmeier - cruel for Fortuna's keeper!
20'
First booking
Burnić is late in his challenge on van Brederode, who cleverly chipped the ball over the Karlsruhe player's leg, and receives the first yellow card of the match.
18'
Calm settles in
The opening minutes clearly belonged to the home side, but they have now dropped back a bit. Meanwhile, the visitors are clearly ahead in terms of possession (34 to 66 percent).
16'
Two corners
Both are harmless. Nevertheless, Fortuna are at least getting a bit closer to the opposition's goal.
13'

Düsseldorf need to regroup and while they are now holding onto the ball for a bit longer, they aren't daring to push forward.

Kaufmann still has it
Not really fully fit, but you wouldn't notice - that's Kaufmann's first goal since December 2023, when he scored for Union Berlin in their Bundesliga clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
9'
Karlsruhe take the lead!
Kaufmann initiates the move himself, coming with pace from the left and playing a one-two with Burnić, who flicks it back with his heel. At the edge of the penalty area, Kaufmann tries to curl the ball into the far corner with his right foot, but the post intervenes. However, it falls kindly and allows Kaufmann a second attempt, which the striker doesn't pass up. Kastenmeier is still on the ground, and the Dane calmly slots it in from the edge of the six-yard box with his left foot.
6'
Karlsruhe on the front foot
Jung gets the ball back into a dangerous position after a failed clearance. Heußer goes down in the penalty area, and the KSC fans call for a penalty. But only briefly. Referee Haslberger indicates it wasn't enough for a foul.
4'
Bold start
Karlsruhe are getting forward courageously in the opening minutes. Schleusener is sent through with a chipped pass, but is offside when the ball is played.
2'
First free-kick
Oberdorf barges into Wanitzek and the fouled player takes the free kick himself. Schleusener rises highest and narrowly misses the goal - also because a Düsseldorf player got a touch on the ball. The subsequent corner comes to nothing.

Never again is always! 21st 'Remembrance Day in German Football'
80 years ago, on 27 January 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated. German football has been commemorating this event for more than 20 years, remembering the people persecuted, deported and murdered by the Nazis on match days around 27 January.
Two changes for Karlsruhe
KSC veteran Sebastian Jung is fit and replaces youngster Rafael Pinto Pedrosa in the starting XI. Additionally: Nicolai Rapp has only missed one match this season due to a yellow card suspension and has otherwise always started, but today the defensive midfielder is on the bench for the first time this year. In his place, Robin Heußer, who has come on as a substitute 16 times in the league, gets his first start for KSC (previously only twice in the cup).
Rossmann for Gavory
The visitors from Düsseldorf have another player unavailable in Nicolas Gavory, with Tim Rossmann returning to the team after serving his suspension for a second yellow card. There is at least some good news, as Shinta Appelkamp is fit again and takes his place on the bench as an option.
Fortuna's starting XI
Kastenmeier - Fridriksson, Hoffmann, Siebert, Oberdorf - Jóhannesson, Haag - van Brederode, Kwarteng, Rossmann - Kownacki
Karlsruhe starting XI
Weiß - Jung, Franke, Beifus, Herold - Heußer, Jensen - Burnić, Wanitzek - Kaufmann, Schleusener
Daniel Thioune on Karlsruhe
"Karlsruhe have developed just as Christian Eichner has developed. He's a superb manager who achieves better and better results every year. When you focus on consistency, it's clear that something can develop there. It's very nice to see."
Christian Eichner on Düsseldorf
"These are always very difficult matches against Düsseldorf because they have a good manager who sets the team up well. They are an individually very good team that have also strengthened themselves again."
Zimmermann in focus
Matthias Zimmermann has an excellent record against his former club: The Karlsruhe native (50 second-division appearances for Karlsruhe) has achieved eight wins and three draws in eleven second-division matches against the club at which he spent his youth.
Good omen
Düsseldorf have consistently picked up points in their last eleven away matches at the Wildpark (four wins, seven draws). Karlsruhe's last home victory against Fortuna dates back to the last millennium (3-1 in September 1998 in the Bundesliga 2, when Klaus Allofs was still the manager in Düsseldorf).
Tale of the tape
Düsseldorf are unbeaten in eleven matches against Karslruhe (eight wins, three draws). The last victory for today's hosts was nine years ago, when Hiroki Yamada scored for a 1-0 away win in March 2016.
