Full-time: Heidenheim 1-3 VfB Stuttgart

Stuttgart take all three points in a fast-paced game in Heidenheim. The visitors were the better side in the first half and duly took a 2-1 lead into the break, but Heidenheim gave it their all in the second term and could have hoped for better as they looked to break an eight-match winless streak. Nick Woltemade starred for the visitors with a goal and an assist, helping Stuttgart to climb to provisional sixth place on the Bundesliga table.

On the front foot

Heidenheim have their say

The home side are putting together a nice little period of possession here, managing to keep the ball near the Stuttgart goal with three corners in quick succession, but without any real danger so far.

More on those teams - Heidenheim

It seems there was something of a pre-Christmas miracle at Heidenheim, with injury clouds clearing over Wanner (starting line-up), Sirlord Conteh and Mikkel Kaufmann (both bench) while club top scorer (four goals) Marvin Pieringer went from ruled out to starting up front. Schmidt returns to a more familiar starting XI, making eight changes to the side that played Başakşehir in the Conference League on Thursday.

VfB Stuttgart starting XI

Nübel - Vagnoman, Rouault, Chabot, Mittelstädt - Millot, Karazor (c), Stiller, Führich - Woltemade, Demirović

VfB Stuttgart subs

Bredlow, Hendriks, Stenzel, Stergiou, Chase, Keitel, Rieder, Malanga, Diehl

Sweating on Wanner

Star Heidenheim youngster Paul Wanner is a doubt with a foot injury, so are Conteh (ill) and Kaufmann (muscular). Out of the game are Maloney (head), Niehues (knee) and Pieringer (Achilles).

Stuttgart's absentees

Stuttgart's list of missing stars remains extensive. Out of action are Leweling (hamstring), Nartey (knee), Raimund (thigh), Touré (foot), Undav (thigh) and Zagadou (knee).

A start for the super sub?

Nick Woltemade is the Bundesliga's highest-scoring substitute this season with three goals, but could be in line for his second league start.

New bogey team?

Stuttgart only picked up one point against Heidenheim last season, that was the fewest of any team they faced in their runners-up campaign.
camera-photo

Frank Schmidt on Stuttgart

"VfB has played six away games and only won one of them. That's the first step for us to believe that we can achieve something here the day after tomorrow. They play very good technical football, but are also prepared to press man-to-man across the entire pitch in defence. We're prepared for that! Nobody gives up here, nobody must give up here and the fans mustn't give up on us either!"
camera-photo

Sebastian Hoeneß on Heidenheim

"Heidenheim have been operating consistently as a club for years. In Frank Schmidt, they have a coach who sets the tone. It’s going to be a difficult task. We want to continue our good run in the Bundesliga and, to do that, we’ll have to give everything we’ve got and have our wits about us."
