Full-time: Augsburg 0-1 Stuttgart

Sebastian Hoeneß' men leave Augsburg with all three points. In a tight affair, it was substitute Deniz Undav, on his return to the team following injury, who scored the only goal of the game, beating Dahmen at the second attempt. Augsburg tried to put their opponents under pressure but struggled to do so as they fell to defeat.

Half-time: Augsburg 0-0 Stuttgart

Goalless at the break in Augsburg. This has been an evenly-matched affair, with both teams unable to exert any real pressure. The visitors have been the more dangerous, with Ermedin Demirović having the encounter's best two opportunities, but he was unable to convert either.

There is still time for either team to snatch a winner, but not much.

Wide

Essende's first touch is lovely, but the subsequent shot is always going past the post. A good spell from Augsburg, though, as they look to break the deadlock.

Huge chance

Demirović really should score! He gets onto the end of a cross just four yards out, yet he doesn't get enough power on it and it glances past the post.

Augsburg team news

Jess Thorup, meanwhile, makes four changes to the side that lost 5-1 to Kiel last time out. Samuel Essende takes Philip Tietz's place up top, while Finn Dahmen returns between the sticks in place of Nediljko Labrović.

Stuttgart team news

The good news for Stuttgart is that Deniz Undav is once again available - he starts on the bench here. Return of a familiar face

Ermedin Demirović is set to face Augsburg for the first time since his summer switch to Stuttgart. The Bosnia international plied his trade at the Fuggerstädter between 2022 and 2024, scoring 23 times in 63 Bundesliga appearances.

Soon to meet again

The sides meet this Sunday afternoon and will reconvene in just 23 days' time in the last eight of the DFB Cup. However, the quarter-final tie will be taking place in Stuttgart.

The risk takers

Stuttgart have already conceded a league-high eleven goals after losing possession in their build-up play this season, six more than their upcoming opponents. Taking risks at the back is simply in Stuttgart's DNA.

Upcoming milestones

An appearance today for Phillip Tietz would be his 50th in the Bundesliga (all for Augsburg). Meanwhile, were Denis Undav to make his return to the pitch, it would bring up a half-century of competitive appearances for Stuttgart.

New year, new pitch

Augsburg have renovated their playing surface ahead of the resumption of their Bundesliga campaign. Will this be a good omen for Jess Thorup's side?

Thorup on facing Stuttgart

"They finished as runners-up last season and had a very good campaign. They're a really good team. They’ve got quality all over the pitch, but for me the important thing is for us to show a reaction after the Kiel defeat, regardless of who we’re playing against."
camera-photo

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Augsburg

“Augsburg have been incredibly strong at home and are hard to play against on home soil. They will certainly have high hopes, but we also want to make a positive start to the year. To do that, we know we’ll have to hold our own at first on Sunday. They will put us under pressure early on and defend aggressively high up the pitch. We need to find solutions for that.”
