Full-time: St. Pauli 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt

Omar Marmoush's goal was all Frankfurt needed to start 2025 with a win! This was a close encounter, with the teams hitting the woodwork twice apiece, the but Egyptian's 14th goal of the season, a well-taken attempt after before the break, was the only effort that rippled the back of the net. Pauli responded well, yet could not find an equaliser.

So close. yet so far

Pauli have had more shots and a higher xG tally than in any other game so far this season, but it looks as if they well end up empty-handed.

Bar!

For the fourth time, the woodwork is rattled. A cross from Treu comes all the way through to Banks, and while he does well to get it towards goal, he can't keep it down from a tight angle and it hits the bar.

Debutants to the rescue?

In Sands and Weißhaupt, Pauli have two new January signings on the pitch. Can they make a difference to the outcome?

Wide

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
Now Pauli lead the way in terms of xG. They are still behind in the statistic that matters however.

Half-time: St. Pauli 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt

Just one goal separates the two teams at the break. Frankfurt had the best early chances and, after Hugo Ekitiké missed a huge opportunity to break the deadlock, Omar Marmoush netted his his 14th strike of the campaign shortly after. Despite falling behind, Pauli responded well, and only the post denied Carlo Boukhalfa from levelling things up shortly before the break.

Post!

A scare for Frankfurt on the brink of half-time! Guilavogui lays the ball off to Boukhalfa, and his low strike bounces off the woodwork to safety. So close for the hosts.

Mishit

After creating some space in the area, Marmoush doesn't catch his shot properly, allowing Vasilj to gather easily.
42'

Vasilj saves

Ekitiké tries to go around the Pauli goalkeeper again. This time, though, Vasilj stands strong and keeps out the Frenchman's subsequent attempt.
39'

Two chances!

Pauli have a couple of opportunities to get back on level terms. It is a routine save for Trapp to keep out Sinani's fierce strike, but Irvine really should do better as he drags a shot eight yards from goal beyond the post.

Showing respect

Marmoush did not want to celebrate his goal against his former club.

Over

Sinani's speculative effort is well-hit, yet it is always going over the bar and Trapp can watch it do so.

Frankfurt have the breakthrough!

Marmoush spares his strike partner Ekitiké's blushes by giving his team the lead. Pauli are unable to clear their lines, but the centre-forward still has work to do to find the back of the net. In the end, it is a brilliant finish as he finds the far corner.

Incredible miss!

Somehow, Frankfurt are still level. The ball breaks to Ekitiké, and after rounding Vasilj, he seems to have all the time in the world to hammer home. However, he hits the post, and Marmoush fires wide from the rebound. He will be hoping he doesn't rue that miss later on.

Chance!

A first opening for Guilavogui, who can only volley over the bar from Afolayan's fizzed cross. It was an open goal, but the speed on the pass meant it was difficult to control.

Brown is Rookie of the Month again

After winning in November, the Frankfurt player continued to impress and doubled down with the Rookie of the Month gong for December.

Immovable objects

Nikola Vasilj and Kevin Trapp are among the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga – both in terms of the percentage of balls saved and in terms of goalkeeping efficiency.

Toppmöller talks Marmoush

"Omar is a very important player for us. There's no contact between any clubs and as long as that's not the case, we don't need to talk about it too much. He has made a good impression in training and will start on Saturday."
camera-photo

Alexander Blessin on facing Frankfurt

"A very interesting opponent that's not quite got it right on the pitch in the past two years despite having a really good squad. I'm talking from experience. I played them last year in the last 16 of the Europa League. They didn't quite manage to get it right as a team. But now they have. They've also made really good signings, adding mentality and togetherness alongside individual quality."
camera-photo

Dino Toppmöller on facing St. Pauli

"Pauli found the going kind of tough at the start of the season. But they made a real statement with their 1-0 win at Stuttgart before the winter break. They cover more ground than any team in the division and also have good ideas with the ball. Just that ability in the final third has been lacking so far."

Strength in numbers

Pauli have added three new faces to their ranks this transfer window: James Sands (New York City FC), Abdoulie Ceesay (Paide Linnameeskond) and a more familiar face in Freiburg's Noah Weißhaupt. Having put themselves in with a chance of staying up, Pauli have added fresh faces and some more Bundesliga experience to help them with their mission.

Frankfurt faltering?

Frankfurt are winless in three, with two of those games being losses. They are still in third place, but have slipped to nine points behind Bayern, a gap they'll be desperate to close.

Pauli hungry for points

St. Pauli are currently hovering above the relegation play-off place in 14th, but secured a 1-o victory away to Stuttgart before the winter break. They'll hope to take the confidence from that into their game against Frankfurt, who will look to reignite their title charge.

Head-to-head

There have been 12 top-flight meetings between these teams, although the most recent of those was back in March 2011. Frankfurt won four of those 12, Pauli three, with five draws.
