Full-time: Leipzig 4-2 Bremen

A winning start to 2025 for Leipzig! Šeško thundered the hosts into a two-goal lead with a powerful effort just after the break, before Baumgartner added a fourth late on. Burke did improve the scoreline from a Werder perspective in added time, but ultimately, it was a deserved victory for the hosts.

More on those teams

Xavi returns to a Leipzig starting XI for the first time since October, and his side will be very happy to see him back in the line-up. He is one of four changes compared to the hosts' last league match. New signing Ridle Baku is also listed as a substitute. Meanwhile, Ole Werner names an unchanged side for the third successive Bundesliga fixture, with January loan signing Issa Kaboré named on the bench alongside Justin Njinmah, who was sidelined through injury before the winter break.

Counter-attack vs. counter defence

Werder have scored five goals from counter-attacks this season: only Frankfurt have scored more (eight). However, only one Bundesliga side is yet to concede from a counter charge this season, and that is RB Leipzig.
camera-photo

Red-hot form

Slovenia international Benjamin Šeško ended the calendar year in style, scoring in each of his side's last three league fixtures. Will he be able to carry that form over into the first game of 2025?

A golden December

Bremen won four out of four to round off 2024, registering three league victories and progressing through to the last eight in the DFB Cup. The last time the Green-Whites went on such a winning streak was in 2021/22, back when they were playing in the Bundesliga 2.

Contrasting winter friendlies

The two sides are resuming their Bundesliga campaigns on the back of mixed results in their friendlies over the winter break. Whilst Bremen suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to FC Twente of the Netherlands last weekend, RB Leipzig got back into scoring ways with a 10-0 victory over Czech third-division side FK Banik Most-Sous on Monday. However, it will be today's result that is more important to the two teams.

Not Werder's favourite away ground

Bremen boast a strong record on the road this season, winning five and drawing one of their eight away league fixtures in 2024/25. However, the Green-Whites have never emerged victorious from the Red Bull Arena. In fact, their 1-1 draw last season was the first time Werder took points from an away meeting against Leipzig.
camera-photo

Ole Werner on facing Leipzig

“They have high quality in all positions and are a well-run club with a good coach. Before the winter, they were missing a few key players and therefore two or three percentage points in one or two games. But one or two of them are coming back, which doesn’t make our job any easier in terms of timing. We’re playing against a top team that has a lot of quality, but we also want to show our quality on the pitch.”
camera-photo

Marco Rose on facing Bremen

“Bremen had a good run before Christmas and moved up the table. We’re fourth in the standings and it's very, very tight behind us - Werder are one of a few teams just two points behind us. Ole Werner has been the coach there for a few years now, they've let him work in peace and it's noticeable. They have clear movement patterns both with and without the ball and are very well drilled.”
