Full-time: Frankfurt 2-0 Dortmund

Dortmund fall to their third successive league defeat since the turn of the year. They were second best against Frankfurt, who took their chances really well to secure a win that consolidates third place in the table. BVB stay 10th for now, but could end the weekend as many eight points adrift of the top four.

Impressive display

Ekitiké thumps the air in celebration as he makes way for Farès Chaïbi. He led the line superbly in the Marmoush role, setting his team on the road to victory with the opening goal.

Game, set and match!

Frankfurt seal the points. Kobel rushes his clearance, with Eintracht's persistence forcing a mistake on halfway from Can. Höjlund is the instigator, the Danish teenager trading passes with Uzun and racing clear to calmly tuck away his first Bundesliga goal.

Late subs

Gio Reyna - an attacker - is on for full-back Ryerson. Frankfurt, meanwhile, replace BVB old boys Knauff and Götze with Jean-Mattéo Bahoya and Can Uzun.
85'

Not given!

Adeyemi's through-pass bypasses the Eintracht defence and falls for Guirassy, who goes down after a possible pull from Theate. The Dortmund camp want a penalty, but the referee has made his mind up - not enough contact.
83'

No way through

Frankfurt have plenty of men behind the ball as Adeyemi has two bites of the cherry on the edge of the area. There are two very, very important blocks before the ball trickles through to Trapp.
80'

Wing men

Gittens works some magic on the left, but his cross is snuffed out by Trapp. Couto follows suit from the opposite flank, continuing his team's push for a way back into this.
79'

Black-Yellow peril

Dortmund's frustrations on show as Can and Guirassy receive a couple of unnecessary bookings in quick succession.
75'

Fresh legs

Kristensen, who's been a real nuisance going forward, is replaced by Tuta in a move that'll surely see Collins move out to the right. Oscar Höjlund's also on, taking the place of the industrious Larsson in central midfield.

Attacking change

Beier and Adeyemi replace Nmecha and Brandt. Positive from the coach as BVB chase an equalising goal...

Getting closer!

Gittens drives at the Frankfurt defence before spreading the play out to Couto on the right-hand side of the area. He whips the ball into the corridor of uncertainly, where an awkward bounce takes it away from Guirassy, who looked poised to finish past Trapp from close range.
61'

Thunderous strike!

The game's beginning to open up as Guirassy lets fly from distance, the BVB No.9 hammering the ball just past the upright. Not sure Trapp would have got to that.
59'

Final ball lacking

Götze's quick thinking sends Kristensen in behind the Dortmund defence. He has teammates to his left, but sends his cross straight into the arms of Kobel.
58'

Right idea

Gittens threatens for the first time, jinking into space in the Frankfurt box before shooting straight at Trapp from an acute angle. BVB need more of the same if they're to get back into this game.
54'

Guirassy back on...

... much to Şahin's relief. Will he get a chance to add to his seven Bundesliga goals in Dortmund colours?
52'

Guirassy on the deck

The Dortmund striker needs treatment after running into Robin Koch, seemingly taking an accidental elbow to the head.
48'

Instant impact!

Couto barrels past Brown and Theate, but his shot from a tight angle is too close to Trapp. Guirassy was unmarked in the middle...
46'

Defensive change

Yan Couto's on at right-back for Dormund at the start of the second half. Bensebaini makes way, with Ryerson moving over to the left as Şahin attempts to alleviate his team's struggles in the wide defensive areas.

Half-time: Frankfurt 1-0 Dortmund

Ekitiké's fine finish has Frankfurt in front at the break. Both teams have hit the woodwork and found joy in the attacking areas, but the ease with which Eintracht have cut through the BVB defence will be of real concern for Şahin.

41'

No penalty!

Guirassy goes down in the Frankfurt penalty area under Collins' challenge, but the referee is unmoved. A heavy touch didn't do him any favours - he was never going to get the ball back under his spell.
37'

Denied!

Schlotterbeck does really well to stop Brown getting a shot away in the Dortmund area, the Germany international timing his sliding challenge to perfection. Again, though, it was far too easy for Frankfurt in the build-up.
34'

Ekitiké!

Close to a second Frankfurt goal as Ekitiké sweeps a first-time shot past the upright after a brilliant run from Knauff. The question is: where was the BVB defence?!

Half chance!

Ekitiké receives the ball in the Dortmund area. The Frenchman has options to his right, but opts for a shot on the turn that doesn't seriously trouble Kobel.

Sensatio-no!

Knauff is millimetres away from a brilliant solo goal against his former club. The Frankfurt attacker waltzes across the box before bending a wicked strike against the upright. Kobel didn't move.
19'

Ekitiké strikes first!

Frankfurt expose Dortmund's defensive frailties with a quick one-two that sends Kristensen scampering in behind Bensebaini. The cross is a peach - right into the six-yard area for Ekitiké to stroke in his ninth Bundesliga goal of the season.

Wing threat

Dortmund are looking really dangerous up their right-hand side with Ryerson and Brandt. The duo combine once more to win a corner, but Bensebaini's cross is cleared.

Woodwork!

Boos rings out as the Black-Yellows enjoy a sustained spell of possession that almost culminates in the opening goal. Ryerson turns away from his marker and finds the head of Guirassy, whose downward header comes back off the foot of Trapp's right-hand post.
4'

Cat and mouse

Eintracht are toying with BVB as Kristensen wins a corner. It's cleared by the visiting shirts, but Frankfurt recycle possession and go back on the offensive as a cross into the area just evades the head of Ekitiké.
2'

Kobel redeems himself!

Wow. Dortmund's No.1 concedes possession when trying to play out from the back. Skhiri collects and feeds the run of Larsson, who shows a lovely first touch before unleashing a low shot that draws a redemptive save from Kobel with his outstretched right foot.

Constasting fortunes

Frankfurt have only lost once at home this season, while Dortmund have won just once on the road. Something has to give...

The Marmoush factor

Marmoush has 15 goals in 17 Bundesliga games so far this season. Across the six fixtures in which he failed to score, Frankfurt took just five points. How will they fare without him in the side altogether?

It's all smiles now...

... but it'll be gloves off a kick-off. Frankfurt will consolidate third place with a win, while BVB - currently down in 10th - desperately need all three points to reignite their fading top-four hopes.

More on those teams

With Marmoush seemingly heading for pastures new, Ansgar Knauff comes into the Frankfurt attack alongside Hugo Ekitiké in the only change to the midweek win over Freiburg. Dortmund make two changes to the 4-2 loss in Kiel, with Waldemar Anton returning in defence and midfielder Pascal Groß back from suspension. Emre Can reverts to midfield as Julien Duranville and Marcel Sabitzer make way.

Watch: The best nutmegs of 2024/25

There's nothing cooler than a nutmeg! Here are some of the best of the Bundesliga 2024/25 season so far.

Europe in jeopardy?

In 2024/25, Dortmund have played their weakest first half of the season in 10 years. In the 2014/15 season in question, they missed out on the Champions League for the only time in the last decade. Can a win over Frankfurt inspire Nuri Şahin's men to turn their season around?
camera-photo

Goals guaranteed

Frankfurt have only picked up one point in their last seven Bundesliga games against Dortmund, conceding 22 goals along the way with a minimum of two goals conceded each game (always at least two per game). Dortmund won the return fixture this season at the Westfalenstadion, thanks to a brace from super-sub Jamie Gittens.
camera-photo

Like father, like son

Frankfurt's 33 points after 17 matchdays is their best tally at this stage of the season since 1993/94 season. That season, the Eagles had a return of 34 points at the equivalent stage, whilst under the management of none other than current head coach Dino Toppmöller's own father, Klaus (left).
camera-photo

Dino Toppmöller on Dortmund

“Before the season started, quite a few people regarded Dortmund as title contenders. Their transfers speak volumes about Dortmund’s ambition, but what’s happening there at the moment doesn’t concern us. I can’t comment on that – and I don’t want to either. It’ll be a difficult task tomorrow against a team with enormous individual quality, but we feel we’re ready for a top performance that will help us beat Borussia Dortmund.”
camera-photo

Nuri Şahin on Frankfurt

"When we played them on Matchday 1, I could already see the quality that was coming, and that Frankfurt were definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with. Dino is a top coach in my eyes and one who has remained calm, even throughout their more difficult spells. Of course, Omar Marmoush is on everyone's lips now, but the man next to him is also very good. They have a very clear structure, they play very confidently at home, thanks to the dynamic within the stadium, and it makes them a top opponent. But maybe they’re exactly the sort of opponent we need right now to make up for what happened [in Kiel]."
camera-photo

"Wonderful spirit"

In contrast to Dortmund, the mood in the Frankfurt camp is especially high right now, with coach Dino Toppmöller saying, "Looking at the table makes us happy, but it fills my heart with joy to see our wonderful spirit and the good energy we bring onto the pitch. This spirit can take us a long way."
camera-photo

"Below our expectations"

Dortmund captain Emre Can attempted to sum up his side's travails this term after Tuesday's Kiel loss, the defensive midfielder saying: "We're not getting it right on the pitch. I want to emphasise that once more, it's not down to the coach. We players are responsible, particularly myself. We have to change that as quickly as possible. We're a long way below our expectations."

BVB bother

Unlike their hosts, Dortmund's fortunes have been going the opposite way in 2025 with last weekend's reverse against Bayer Leverkusen followed by a shock loss at strugglers Holstein Kiel.
camera-photo

Eagles rising

A 100 per cent record in 2025 so far means that Die Adler have put a pre-New Year blip behind themselves and are riding high once more. Top scorer Omar Marmoush has been instrumental in Frankfurt's two wins this year against St. Pauli and Freiburg.
