Full-time! Bremen 1-0 Mainz

The nine men of Bremen withstand the late onslaught to take a win that lifts them up to seventh and to within a point of Mainz in sixth. Bittencourt's first-half strike decided an eventful encounter that has just concluded with Werder head coach Ole Werner being shown his team's third red card of the night!

Bremen down to nine men!

Bizarre scenes here! Stark's booked for the second time after delaying a throw-in. Friedl voices his disapproval to the referee and pays the price with a second yellow of his own! Will Werder hold on?

Pair of yellows

Zetterer dallies over a free-kick, before Lynen follows him into the book for a late challenge in midfield. Werder suddenly look very nervous...

Last push

The Mainz players are camped inside the Bremen half, but the home team are defending doggedly in front of their own box, despite losing Jung to injury a moment ago.
83'

Zentner in the thick of things

The Mainz goalkeeper spills a flicked header, before recovering to stop Köhn turning in the rebound. It's been a really mixed night at the office for him...

Nordin debut

The Frenchman gets his first taste of Bundesliga action following his move from Montpellier. Widmer's also on at right-back for the final stages.
79'

Fresh ideas

Is Bayern Munich-owned Sieb the man to get Mainz back into this? He replaces Weiper with two goals in 18 games so far this season...
77'

Over!

Njinmah shows a great first touch after being played over the top of the Mainz defence. Zentner's out to narrow the angle and is grateful to see Werder's Dutch forward lift the ball onto the roof of the net.
75'

Disallowed goal!

Bremen pick off a Mainz attack and surge forward with Njinmah. He's blocked off, but manages to feed Schmid for a curled attempt that Zentner can only parry. The loose ball goes in off Weiser, who was offside as the shot came in.
71'

Double change

Ducksch hasn't been at his razor-sharp best today, while Kaboré has faded since the restart. Messrs Köhn and Grüll are on for the final 20 minutes, plus stoppages.
69'

Off the line!

That was almost Mainz's moment. Weiper breaks clear and finds Nebel, who squeezes the ball past Zetterer, but not Stark in front of the goal-line.

Woodwork!

Mainz work it quickly for Da Costa, who takes aim from outside the area. The ball takes a wicked deflection off Jung and, with Zetterer having already dived to his left, grazes the outside of the right-hand post.
59'

Another injury problem

Friedl stays down after appearing to twist his right knee. The physios attend to the Austrian, before he hobbles to his feet. Surprisingly, he is back on the pitch - but for how long?
56'

Bell forced off

The Mainz veteran has pulled up with a muscle strain. Leitsch is his replacement.
51'

Denied!

Moments after drawing a flying save from Zetterer with a flicked header, Weiper does really well to creating a shooting chance for Nebel in the Mainz box. He shoots goalwards, but has three defenders in his way and it deflects behind.
47'

So close!

Schmid gets the better of Bell and Zentner after Bremen aim long, but is off balance as he goes to shoot and the ball trickles wide with a red shirt guarding the goal-line.
46'

Here we go again!

There's no Amiri for Mainz. Hong's on in the injured midfielder's stead. Bremen are unchanged.

Half-time: Bremen 1-0 Mainz

Werder take a deserved lead into the dressing room. They've created chances, scored one and missed a penalty. Mainz, by contrast, have yet to test Zetterer.

The Mainz man collides with Lynen on the edge of the Bremen area. Both players need treatment, but are on their feet again.

Fiery end to the first half

A couple of loose challenges don't go unpunished. Caci is now suspended for Mainz's meeting with Augsburg next weekend.
37'

Alvero on

A very different proposition for Mainz as the 6'8" Alvero replaces Bittencourt in midfield.
camera-photo

Bitter-sweet for Bittencourt

Goals in successive games, but an injury lay-off looks likely, judging by the way the Bremen midfielder exited the field of play just now.
33'

Bittencourt limps off

So harsh on the injury-hit Bremen man, who can't continue after pulling a muscle in his right leg. He goes straight down the tunnel...
30'

Dinked effort

Ducksch collects a pass into the Mainz area, before trying to catch out Zentner with a lob. It's too close to the goalkeeper, though. Nijinmah had made a great run to his left and was perhaps the better option.

Another scare for Bremen as Ducksch tries to get on the head of a searching pass from the back. Zentner gets there first, though.

Now Bremen lead!

Werder get the goal their bright start deserves. There's a bit of pin-ball as Mainz fail to deal with a corner from the right. Kaboré flicks it on for Bittencourt, who rifles into the roof of the net from close range.

Top scorers missing

Who'll pick up the load in the absence of Bremen's seven-goal Jens Stage (suspended) and injured Mainz goal-getter Jonathan Burkardt, who's struck 12 times so far this term?

A welcome visit

Mainz have won seven times in Bremen since their promotion to the Bundesliga, making the Weser Stadium their happiest top-flight hunting ground.

Unlikely contenders

Mainz can go fourth with a win, overnight at least. Three points for Werder, on the other hand, would take them to within two points of the UEFA Champions League qualification spots.

More on those teams

Mainz boss Bo Henriksen has followed the "never change a winning team" mantra following his side's 2-0 triumph over VfB Stuttgart last weekend and stuck with the same 11 players. Bremen, meanwhile, make four changes in the wake of the 2-2 draw win Dortmund on Matchday 19. Stark comes in for Veljković in defence, Bittencourt replaces Stage, who is suspended, Kaboré takes Köhn's place on the wing, and Njinmah is given the head instead of Grüll up top.

Bremen starting XI

Zetterer - Stark, Friedl (c), Jung - Weiser, Bittencourt, Lynen, Kaboré - Schmid, Njinmah - Ducksch

Bremen subs

Mainz starting XI

Winless in 2025

So far Bremen have not tasted victory in 2025, with two draws and two defeats. Only Dortmund have had a worse start to the new year. Can Ole Werner's men break out of their funk against a strong Mainz side?

Ole Werner on facing Mainz

"We want to win the game. We want to have what it takes to beat a strong opponent, which we're capable of. We're heading into the game with a good feeling but are focused on putting in a strong performance, which we will need."

Bo Henriksen on facing Werder

"We know that it’s going to be a tough contest. It is essential that we throw ourselves into every tackle, giving it everything we’ve got. We also need to be courageous enough to play our football but that desire to win the ball is the most important thing."

Arnaud Nordin in at Mainz

Having signed for Mainz from Montpellier on Tuesday, French attacker Arnaud Nordin is hoping to make his Bundesliga bow for Bo Henriksen's men against Bremen. "It has been a dream of mine for some time to be able to play in the Bundesliga, so I am really pleased to get that chance here at Mainz," the 26-year-old said at his unveiling at the 05ers.
camera-photo

Kaboré eyes first start

Issa Kaboré has four Bundesliga appearances under his belt since signing for Werder on loan from Manchester City but coach Ole Werner admits the left-sided player could be in line for his first German top-flight start against Mainz. "He's already well-versed in how we look to play as a team, which makes him an option for our starting XI," Werder's coach explained.

Mainz tie Bo Henriksen down

There was some big news for fans of the 05ers this week with coach Bo Henriksen agreeing terms on a contract extension that ties the Dane to the club until 2027. “I knew from my first day here that it’s a special place to be," the Mainz coach said. "I’m not just part of a club, but part of a whole city. You can sense the passion, pride, faith and belief in the team in every corner of Mainz."
