Harry Kane talks Supercup victory

"It was a great game for us and such an important encounter at this stage of the season. We've had a few weeks training and the boys looked good tonight. We could have scored a few more and made things easy for ourselves. The mentality of this squad is to celebrate every trophy like it's the first. We are building on what we did last year, the foundations are there. We are ready to go full gas from now, starting against Leipzig [in the Bundesliga] on Friday."
camera-photo

Luis Díaz on Supercup success

"I'm so happy tonight. To score was really special. My first official title and my first goal, for Bayern, what can I say? It was a spectacular night for me. I want to win as many titles as I can here. I tried to find a great club that competes in big competitions and I'm happy to be here. It's special to play with Harry Kane, he's a phenomenon. It's really easy to play alongside him as he has so much quality; it's a privilege."

Full-time: Stuttgart 1-2 Bayern

Bayern Munich are the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup champions after the Bundesliga title-holders downed DFB Cup winners Stuttgart at the MHPArena with goals in either half from Harry Kane and FCB's competitive debutant Luis Díaz. Some super Manuel Neuer saves and Jamie Leweling's late header for VfB made things more than interesting, but Vincent Kompany's men were worthy winners in the end.

Stuttgart experience

As mentioned below, the home side only missed out on Supercup glory to Leverkusen last year after a penalty shootout (after the 2024 showpiece finished 2-2). What VfB bring from that setback is plenty of experience in the feet of those who started last time out and again here, namely, Führich, Leweling, Stiller, Karazor, Mittelstädt and Chabot.
camera-photo

Díaz all set

What a night for new Bayern signing Luis Díaz, who will be keen to impress on his competitive bow for the Bavarians. Some 42 days ago, the record Bundesliga champions were knocked out of the FIFA Club World Cup by PSG. Kingsley Coman played on the left in that game, but with the Frenchman having since moved on, it's now Díaz's time to shine.

Woltemade focus

What a few months it's been for Nick Woltemade - who is making his Supercup debut. There as been all of that transfer talk too, but the Stuttgart striker is looking fully focused on bringing the Swabians one more title at the MHPArena.

Waiting in the wings

Bayern's in-form, 17-year-old attacker Lennart Karl is among the visiting subs today. We have to imagine we'll see Europe's newest wunderkind at some point this evening, with Karl on fire in pre-season. After appearing in the summer's Club World Cup, the lively winger netted in each of FCB's last two friendly games.

More on those teams

Alex Nübel misses out through injury against his parent club, so Fabian Bredlow starts in goal. Ex-Bayern youngster Angelo Stiller is passed fit, though, while Nick Woltemade leads the line, despite continued interest from the record champions. As for the visitors, there's a competitive debut for marquee summer signing Luis Díaz, with Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane completing the attack. Josip Stanišić continues at left-back in place of the injured Alphonso Davies.

TT's back!

Those earlier reports were true: Tiago Tomás is now a Stuttgart player. "I'm really happy to able to play for VfB again," the Portuguese forward said. "I'm delighted that the transfer worked out and I'm looking forward to being part of the whole team."
camera-photo

On the spot

In the case of a draw after 90 minutes, the Supercup is decided by a penalty shoot-out, with no extra time being played, as was the case last season when Leverkusen edged Stuttgart. Penalties also settled matters in 1993 (Bremen), 1996 (Dortmund), 2011 (Schalke), 2015 (Wolfsburg) and 2017 (Bayern).
camera-photo

A serial winner

Bayern's Kompany won the English version of the Supercup twice as a player with Man City, whilst tasting defeat once. He can also count four Premier League titles among his playing-day accolades. The Belgian's going for his third trophy as a head coach later today, after Bundesliga and English Championship triumphs with Bayern and Burnley respectively.
camera-photo

Transfer news

Reports out of Stuttgart suggest Tiago Tomás will have a medical with the club later today. The Portuguese forward, 23, made 47 appearances for Die Schwaben during an 18-month loan spell from Sporting Lisbon between January 2022 and joining Wolfsburg on a permanent deal in summer 2023.

Following last season's DFB Cup triumph, the 43-year-old could become only the second Stuttgart boss after Christoph Daum to win two trophies with the club in the top flight.

Mr Supercup

Manuel Neuer's set to make his 11th Supercup appearance, putting him behind only former teammate Thomas Müller for most outings in the competition (12). Victory for Bayern would take him level with his old mate on a record eight Supercup wins.
camera-photo

A decision to make

On paper, Serge Gnabry would appear next in line to fill the front four behind Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Díaz. He missed the Spurs friendly with a slight issue but is fully fit now, according to Kompany. But the form of teenager Lennart Karl in pre-season has thrust him into the limelight. His only senior appearance to date was against Auckland City in the Club World Cup. Could he make his second from the start in Stuttgart?

Au revoir, King!

On the eve of the Supercup, Bayern have confirmed that decorated winger Kingsley Coman has joined Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia. The Frenchman made 339 appearances after joining the record champions in 2015, hoovering up 21 titles.
camera-photo

Joshua Kimmich on Stuttgart showdown

"Whether it's pre-season or the Bundesliga […], we want to win. If we're up against VfB in the Supercup, then we want to win that too. For us, development matters in every game, but in the end it's about results. We want to win every game, including the Supercup."
camera-photo

Kompany on Bayern's youngsters

"We're always very proud when we can bring through young players from the Campus. Not just Lennart Karl, but Cassiano Kiala and Wisdom Mike - we promoted them from the Under-17s to the first team. The same goes for [Jonah] Kusi-Asare. There are four or five names we've promoted over the last 12 months. We're in quite a good position with the young players we have."
camera-photo

Vincent Kompany on the Supercup

"Speaking from experience, it's important to win it. I've won it a few times in my career. For us as a club, every trophy is important, so this one is important as well. There's no doubt it's an important game for us."
camera-photo

'A very special team'

We'll be hearing from Bayern boss Vincent Kompany a little later on. While we wait, here's a bit more from VfB skipper Atakan Karazor, who has been talking up his team's chances ahead of Saturday's clash. "Our team is a very special team," he said. "It's not only [in-form striker] Nick Woltemade, it's all the players - even those some of you maybe don't know. We have great quality in every position. I'm happy and looking forward to this season."
camera-photo

Karazor keen for more glory

The Stuttgart captain added ahead of the Supercup: "We have another chance to win a title. Not so long ago, a few months ago, we won the DFB Cup final. That moment was so special. Another title for this club, for this city, would be amazing."

Atakan Karazor on facing Bayern

"Every time you play Bayern, it’s special. They are one of the best teams in the world. In the end, we need to focus on ourselves. As VfB Stuttgart, we shouldn’t make ourselves out to be smaller than we are. We also have a good team with great players.”

Before that, Stuttgart hadn't beaten Bayern since the end of the 2017/18 season. That means that Bayern have won nine of the last 12 meetings between the two sides. Why these teams?

The Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, which is bearing that name for the first time this year in honour of the late Bayern and Germany legend, is traditionally played between the previous season's Bundesliga champions (Bayern) and DFB Cup winners (Stuttgart) - or Bundesliga runners-up, if the cup winners also won the league.

When and where?

The match will be held at Stuttgart's MHP Arena on Saturday 16 August at 8.30pm CEST.
