BREMEN ARE LEVEL!

Oh, my! There's a VAR review for a penalty following Matriciani's challenge on Assale. It's given, and Fullkrüg makes no mistake from 12 yards!

TERODDE STRIKES!

Simon Terodde becomes the Bundesliga 2's outright all-time leading scorer. He reacts fastest after Pavenka could only parry Zalazar's long-range strike to bring up his 12th goal of the season and 154th in Germany's second tier.

THIAW!

Big, big chance for Schalke. Thiaw meets Ouwejan's precision cross, but sends his header just wide of the far post. Pavlenka was beaten, too!

BREMEN JUST ABOUT ON TOP

But this one's on a knife-edge heading into the final 15 minutes...

CLOSE!

Groß flicks a Ducksch corner towards the far post, but Ouwejan's there to make the clearance. Werder need to capitalise on this spell of pressure.

DUCKSCH AGAIN!

Bremen continue to find joy in behind the Schalke defence. Ducksch runs onto Mbom's lofted pass, Fraisl comes off his line, but the Werder forward's headed attempt goes wide of the upright.
58'

FULLKRÜG!

Werder play it wide again, with Schmid taking the ball down the left and crossing into the danger zone. Fullkrüg connects with the ball, but doesn't land it on target.
56'

DUCKSCH!

Lovely play from Bremen as Mbom sets Agu free down the right. Bittencourt leaves the cross for Ducksch, but he can only place his shot straight at Fraisl.
51'

TOPRAK DOES HIS JOB

Terodde motions towards a pass from Bülter, but Toprak gets in the way before he can make a meaningful contact. Superb intervention by the Werder veteran.
47'

SCHALKE CHANGE

Rodrigo Zalazar's on for the start of the second half. Victor Palsson, booked late in the first, gets the hook. Wise move from Schalke coach Dimitrios Grammozis.

GOALLESS AT THE BREAK

We've had half chances, with the best of the bunch falling to Fullkrüg, but there's nothing to separate the two German powerhouses at the break.

ADDITIONAL TIME

Three minutes added on at the end of a keenly contested first half...

HANDBAGS

Palsson gets away with just a caution after going in hard on Toprak. Fullkrüg's not impressed, and goes into the referee's little black book for his remonstrations.
39'

WERDER PROBING

Bremen threaten as Fullkrüg combines with Agu down the right. The latter crosses for Ducksch, but Kaminski slides in before he can get a shot away.

CHANCE-O-CLOCK!

Another mistake in the Bremen backline as Groß clears only as far as Terodde, who blazes over. Bremen break with Bittencourt and Schmid, before finding Fullkrüg in the box. He beats Fraisl, but Palsson's back to clear his shot off the line!

AERIAL COLLISION

There's a clash of heads between Agu and Drexler, but thankfully both players are OK to continue. Bit tetchy, this one.

HALF CHANCE

Aydin goes into the book for a foul on Bittencourt. The free-kick from out wide finds Ducksch, but instead Gruev takes it on and shoots wide.
19'

OUWEJAN THREAT

Thomas Ouwejan advances up the left. His cross takes a deflection, before Pavlenka gathers. Bremen need to take the sting out of this Schalke spell.

CHANCE!

Just when we were singing Bittencourt's praises, the Werder midfielder inadvertently plays a pass straight to Terodde. He goes into the box, but can't direct his lobbed attempt on target. Huge let-off for the hosts!
5'

BITTENCOURT THREAT

Leonardo Bittencourt isn't holding back when he picks up possession the final third. The German with Brazilian roots can be a real handful on his day.

UNDER WAY!

The ball's rolling at the Weser-Stadion. Danjiel Zenkovic and U19s coach Christian Brand are on the Bremen bench, following Markus Anfang's resignation earlier this week.

SEASON SO FAR

Bremen go into the game in eighth, a place and three points behind Schalke, who can go level third with a win and to within a point of the automatic promotion places.

DUC-KRÜG

Six-goal Bremen striker Marvin Ducksch has registered more attempts on goal than any other Bundesliga 2 player in 2021/22 (59). Niclas Füllkrug - Werder captain on Matchdays 12 and 13 - has produced two goals and as many assists across his last three outings. Who doesn't love an old-school front two?!

TERODDE DROUGHT

Schalke top scorer Simon Terodde has not scored in four games since equalling Dieter Schatzschneider’s Bundesliga 2 goals record (153). Mr. Bundesliga 2 was streaking clear at the top of this season's scoring charts, but now trails 12-goal Paderborn veteran Sven Michel by one. He hasn't found the net in four career meetings with Werder, either.

MORE ON THOSE TEAMS

Experienced centre-back Ömer Toprak's back in the Bremen XI, in one of four changes to the team that beat Nuremberg 2-1 prior to the international break. Christian Groß also comes into the back three, while Felix Agu and Leo Bittencourt start in midfield. Schalke are unchanged from the 4-2 home loss to Darmstadt.
