Paderborn sneak it!

A tight game settled by a set-piece banger. Paderborn go third, for 48 hours at least. Kaiserslautern are three points back in fifth.

Off the line!

FCK goalkeeper Luthe stays up following a corner. A return cross causes real panic, and it takes a combination of Heuer and Platte to clear off the line.

Now or never

Positive changes by Schuster. Kaiserslautern have not lost back-to-back games since returning to Bundesliga 2 via the play-offs...
camera-photo
Such a keenly fought contest - you just knew it was going to take something special to break the deadlock.

We have a goal!

Conteh's pace causes problems for Zimmer, who concedes a foul on the edge of the area. It's left of centre, but not a problem for Heuer - he hammers one over the wall and into the top corner. It was the Paderborn defender who made that goal-saving challenge on Boyd in the first half, too!

Goal probability
information
Goal probability
Goal probability determines the likelihood that the ball will land in the goal from every position on the pitch. The value is based on large amounts of data from previous years; factors such as shot angle, distance to goal and opponent pressure - as well as mathematical models.

Closer!

Bormuth only half clears a cross from Justvan. Klaas goes to meet it, but sends his effort just wide!

Off the post!

The closest we've come to a goal as Boyd dives in on the stretch to turn Zimmer's low cross against the crossbar.

Expected Goals

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).

Over!

Justvan with a fine solo run, but the eventual shot isn't up to scratch.

Set-piece threat

Bright start from Kaiserslautern, who win a string of corners. Paderborn stand firm, though.

Here we go again!

No changes at the break. Will we see a goal in the second half?

Goalless at the break

A case of defences on top so far in Paderborn, but there have been a few warning signs at both ends.

Unsurprising that it's the respective top scorers for their sides - but still no goals.

Half chance!

Klement with a free-kick out on the left. Boyd rises, but can't keep his header down. Kaiserslautern have scored 11 goals from set-pieces this term...
37'

Rapp!

Not far away at all from the Kaiserslautern No.4, who slaps a loose clearance through the legs of Justvan and narrowly wide of the upright.
35'

Boyd denied!

Boyd's in over the top, but delays his shot and Heuer is able to put in a crucial sliding challenge. That was as good as a goal.
32'

Tame header

Obermair and Muslija continue to see plenty of the play out on the left-hand side. A ball comes in from the latter, but it's asking a lot of Leipertz, who can't summon the power to seriously test Luthe.

Pot shot

Klement with his second attempt of the contest, this time from range - but it doesn't trouble the goalkeeper. Luthe's OK to continue, by the way...

Luthe concern

There's a stoppage as Luthe receives treatment for what looks like a left leg injury.
15'

Big chance!

Obermair sends over a cross to the back post, where Hoffmeier is able to steer it back into the danger zone. It's awkward for Pieringer, though, and his close-range header fails to find the target.

Wide from Boyd!

A sign of Boyd's confidence levels as he takes on a bouncing ball in the box, driving across the face of goal from a tight angle. He's some specimen - the Paderborn defenders can't handle him.
9'

Justvan!

A ball from deep splits the Kaiserslautern defence. Justvan takes it into the area, but can't beat Luthe in the one-on-one. Leipertz then blazes the follow-up into row M.
7'

Klement!

Lovely football from Kaiserslautern. Ritter runs up the right and crosses into the feet of Boyd in the box. The American touches it off to Klement, who curls a first-time effort wide of the upright.

Switched on

Just a reminder Paderborn were 2-0 down to Hannover by this stage last week.

Early promise

Boyd's involved immediately, hooking a cross into the box - but there are no takers.

The goal brokers

Paderborn are this season's top scorers in Bundesliga 2, with 44 goals. Only Heidenheim and Bielefeld have kept them out.

Elsewhere on Matchday 21

Relegation-threatened Braunschweig, who won promotion as 3. Liga runners-up, face eighth-placed Kiel in the day's other fixture. Leaders Darmstadt go to Rostock tomorrow, while promotion rivals HSV and Heidenheim are in action on Sunday against Bielefeld and Nuremberg respectively.

Paderborn won the reverse fixture on Matchday 4 - only their second competitive victory over the Red Devils (D2, L5).

More on those teams

Müller comes in for the injured Klefisch in the only change to the Paderborn team that beat Hannover. Kaiserslautern show five changes following their loss to Pauli, with Tomiak, Ritter, Klement, Zuck and Zolinski replacing Durm, Niehues, Opoku, Hanslik and Redondo.

Schuster targets reponse to Pauli loss

"We deserved to lose to St. Pauli because we didn't do enough in attack to get anything from the game," Kaiserslautern head coach Dirk Schuster told media on Wednesday. "We have to do better in that sense against Paderborn, but we also have to be tight defensively and then take our chances to exploit any gaps."

Kwasinok wary of Boyd

"Kaiserslautern like to impose themselves, control the play and they have a real weapon in Terrence Boyd!" warned Paderborn head coach Lukas Kwasinok at his pre-match press conference. "We have to bide our time, be patient and not allow ourselves to lose focus."

Key man - Paderborn

Robert Leipertz has 11 goals, putting him second only to Hamburg counterpart Robert Glatzel (14) in the Bundesliga 2 scoring charts. The Paderborn front man, who put away his second brace of the campaign last time out, has scored in all three league games so far this year.

Key man - Kaiserslautern

Terrence Boyd has been key to Kaiserslautern's stellar season so far back in Bundesliga 2. The former USA international - who turned 32 yesterday - has scored 10 goals in 20 games, including two braces on the road. What's more, of the eight games in which he's found the net, the Red Devils have won seven, drawing the other.

Watch: Hannover 3-4 Paderborn

Paderborn came from 2-0 down to win a seven-goal thriller with Hannover on Matchday 20. That's now maximum points from three games in 2023, having lost their final four fixtures of 2022.

Watch: St. Pauli 1-0 Kaiserslautern

Kaiserslautern lost for only the third time this season last time out, a result that ended a seven-match unbeaten run comprising five wins on the spin.

Welcome!

Bundesliga 2 under the Friday night lights - what better way to usher in the weekend?! Paderborn and Kaiserslautern are separated by just goal difference in fourth and fifth place respectively. A win for either would lift them into the promotion play-off spot, for 48 hours at least. Stay tuned!
