Full-time: Ulm 0-0 Schalke

The match is over! It ends with a goalless and ultimately deserved draw. Ulm were more dominant, but rarely dangerous. Krattenmacher was the outstanding player. Schalke remained lacklustre for much of the second half.

Heekeren

Heekeren securely catches Rsouveränösch's sharp cross from the left byline. That could have been dangerous otherwise.
86'

No risk

Both teams seem to be avoiding taking any major risks. Understandable given Ulm have already conceded one or two late goals at home this season.
77'

Schalke too imprecise on the wings

Schalke's play on the wings isn't bad at all but their crosses simply aren't good enough.
76'

Header off target

Telalovic, who has been substituted on, makes a good run to meet a cross. His header goes over the bar.
74'

Heekeren alert

Heekeren, the Schalke keeper, has saved all four shots at his goal. He's collecting plus points in the battle for the number one spot. Will he be the first S04 keeper to keep a clean sheet this season?

Goalkeeper Efficiency of Justin Heekeren

information
Goalkeeper Efficiency
Goalkeeper Efficiency compares the number of saves a goalkeeper makes with his expected saves (xSaves). xSaves is calculated with the help of artificial intelligence. When a goalkeeper has a positive efficiency value, it means he has saved more shots than statistically expected.

Ulm's half-chances

Higl shoots straight into Heekeren's arms. Then Rösch fails to get a proper shot off after a good dribble. Ulm are playing better - but their finishing situations are never truly dangerous.

Nothing more from Schalke

Schalke's last shot on goal came in the 40th minute. After the break, only Ulm are playing.
60'

Krattenmacher 2.0

This guys is simply fun to watch. This time, he curls a ball from the right-hand edge of the penalty area towards the far corner. Heekeren tips the ball away for a corner, which comes to nothing.
59'

Ulm takimg control

In the second half, Ulm have clear advantages in possession and territorial control, along with more attempts on goal.

Free-kick wasted

Higl blasts a free-kick well over the crossbar.
53'

Krattenmacher!

The biggest chance in the second half. Strompf plays a through ball from defence to Krattenmacher, who wins a one-on-one and fires a powerful shot from a tight angle. Heekeren saves it.
50'

Tactical foul

Kamiński commits the mother of all tactical fouls on the touchline.
49'

First chance

After a corner, Krattenmacher - of course - gets to the ball and dribbles parallel to the penalty area. His shot goes a metre over the crossbar.
47'

Seguin late

Seguin arrives late in midfield and receives a yellow card. Rösch requires treatment

Half-time

We go into the break with a goalless and fair draw.

Ulm recovering faster

Ulm are winning back possession nearly six seconds faster than the visitors
45'

No real midfield

The last few minutes before half-time are back and forth. Both teams initiate attacks but fail to create a decisive finish. This is also why the goalless draw so far is a fair result.

Ball Recovery Time

information
Ball Recovery Time
Ball Recovery Time gives the time in seconds in which it takes a team to win back the ball following a loss of possession. It also allows conclusions to be drawn about a team's style of play. Only time when the ball is in play is counted (i.e. no breaks in play such as for goal-kicks, throw-ins etc).

Stoll's finish

Rösch does very well to get to the byline on the left and deliver a low cross. Rösch turns and gets a shot away but Heekeren saves again.
39'

Shot blocked

Now it's Schalke's turn! Seguin plays it out to the right. The lay-off finds Grüger. His shot is cleared for a corner, which comes to nothing.
37'

Chance for Ulm

Krattenmacher - again and again it's the same player! He's played through centrally once more, runs into the penalty area and shoots with his left foot from the left. Heekeren parries to the side. Schalke had pushed up too carelessly there.
34'

Long-range shots

Rösch and, shortly before, Maier try their luck from distance, with deflected shots whistling over and wide of the goal respectively. Nice to watch - but it's not getting dangerous in the penalty area yet.

Schalke lead in xG

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The xG statistics show that Schalke are well in the game. However, Krattenmacher's long-range shot that hit the crossbar is underrepresented in this metric.

Schalke working their way into the match

Bachmann, who has already received a yellow card, and his teammates are well in the game. It's an evenly matched encounter with now slight advantages for the away side.
25'

Pressure phase

After a dangerous corner, Schalke continue to apply pressure. Subsequently, Bulut fires a powerful shot on goal but hits Strompfs, who requires treatment.
22'

Yellow card

Stoll had tackled Mohr during an attacking attempt. The yellow card is the result.
21'

Schalke on the attack

Schalke execute a structured and quick attack forward. Mohr plays the ball to Murkin, who drives to the left byline and lays it off to Karaman. Bulut's shot is blocked.
17'

Aydin misses

Murkin delivers a good cross from the left but Aydin misses at the far post.
14'

Crossbar!

The first big chance of the match falls to Ulm! Once again, Krattenmacher is played through in midfield, takes two or three quick steps centrally and strikes with the inside of his foot just outside the penalty area, but his powerful drive crashes off the crossbar.
10'

Ulm more precise

Ulm have had slightly more possession, but in the first ten minutes in particular, they have been more accurate with their passing than the visitors.

First-choice XI?

In the cup match against Augsburg, Schalke had made seven changes to the starting line-up compared to the league game against Fürth. The result in Augsburg was clear, but the second half was quite promising. It seems van Wonderen sees it similarly.

Schalke largely unchanged

Schalke's new coach Kees van Wonderen makes only one change following Tuesday's DFB Cup defeat in Augsburg. Seguin comes in for Donkor, which will likely mean Murkin moving to the left side of the defence.

Three changes for Ulm

There are three changes for Ulm following their 1-1 draw in Darmstadt: Maier for Hyryläinen in the centre, Stoll starts for Meier on the left, and Krattenmacher leads the attack in place of Keller.

Schalke's starting XI

Heekeren - Bulut, Kalas, Kaminski, Murkin - Aydin, Grüger, Seguin, Bachmann, Mohr - Karaman

Ulm's starting XI

Thiede - Geyer, Strompf, Kolbe - Rösch, Brandt, Maier, Stoll, Chessa, Krattenmacher - Higl

Wörle's view on Schalke

"I believe we need balance. They certainly have individual quality, especially in the offensive areas. The task is to try to defend in a very controlled and stable manner. That will be one task, but of course also to create a certain pressure to show what we can do here at home. We have the home advantage with our fans behind us, and we want to try to bring that to bear."

Van Wonderen's view on Ulm

"We have three matches in a short period. We've gained experience from the match in Augsburg and now we're focusing on the important game in Ulm."

Cup success

The last encounter took place on 22 December 2020. Still a Bundesliga side at the time, Schalke won 3-1 against the Regionalliga team in the second round of the DFB Cup.

Once a Bundesliga fixture

The pair also met in the Bundesliga during Ulm's sole top-flight campaign in 1999/2000. Both encounters ended in draws.

Second season together

Ulm and Schalke previously played together in the 1983/84 Bundesliga 2 season, with the respective home team winning each fixture. Schalke's 3-0 victory in Gelsenkirchen was followed by Ulm's 1-0 success in that remains their only competitive victory over the Royal Blues.
