Conclusion

Nuremberg dominated the match for long periods with more possession and took the lead through a header from Tzimas. However, Karlsruhe equalised with their first shot on goal through Schleusener. The second half was quiet - until the 91st minute, when Flick summoned all his courage and scored from over 20 metres to secure the win for the hosts. A lacklustre Karlsruhe missed the chance to jump to the top of the table.

The Lucky Punch!!!

The substitute does it! Villadsen breaks through on the right side, doesn't cross it into the middle this time, but passes back to Flick, who strikes it with his right foot from over 20 metres and buries the ball in Weiß's net!

Another corner

Castrop delivers but can't find a teammate. Nevertheless, he's putting in a good performance, with four shots on goal to his name (no one has more) and winning 73 percent of his duels.
85'

Too much curl

After a free kick from a central position, Herold crosses into the penalty area, but the ball is too central and Reichert parries it to the side.

That was close!

Wanitzek powerfully heads a cross from the left, Reichert drops it in front of the newly substituted Pfeiffer, but the ball rolls through his legs, and the Club clears in the nick of time.

Another Yellow Card

Burnić steps on Emreli's foot and is cautioned for it.

Castrop!

Now they're even getting in their own way! Castrop cuts in from the left into the penalty area and shoots, but hits his own teammate Tzimas. The ball flies over the goal to the left, not even resulting in a corner for the Club.

As so often:

Nuremberg can't find a recipient in the middle. Once again, they combine well going forward, Tzimas crosses from the right byline, but can only find a Karlsruhe shirt.

Weiß has to come out!

Villadsen sends Emreli through on goal but Reichert slides in and gathers it in his arms before he can get there.

Similar start

The picture is similar to the beginning of the first half: Nuremberg has possession of the ball, Karlsruhe is chasing. However, the hosts are not creating any goal-scoring opportunities.

Good free-kick position

Rapp runs into Karafiát's back, Storks blows the whistle and the Club have a free-kick in a good position near the edge of the penalty area. However, the ball is played too low into the centre, and the visitors can easily clear it.

In a match that was quiet for a long time, the Club dominated the first half with significantly more possession. Nuremberg's lead, taken through Tzimas' header, didn't last long as Karlsruhe clinically took advantage of their first chance, with Schleusener also nodding in from a precise cross by Pinto Pedrosa.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
After half an hour, the xGoals value of the away team is not on the charts. Nuremberg, with Tzimas's chance, at least reach 0.45 xGoals.

Karlsruhe can jump to top spot

With a victory, Karlsruhe would take over the top of the Bundesliga 2 table for the first time since matchday 2 of the 2021/22 season. The last time the Baden-Württemberg side topped the table during the second half of the season was in May 2007, when they were promoted to the Bundesliga.

Finally back in the squad

Christian Eichner is pleased about two returnees: Kobald was out for three months, while Bormuth was absent for ten months following a cruciate ligament rupture.

First start for 17-year-old

Due to Sebastian Jung's absence, Rafael Pinto Pedrosa makes his starting XI debut in Bundesliga 2 for Karlsruhe, after previously making four brief appearances off the bench.

Kaufmann to replace Zivzivadze

Returning player Mikkel Kaufmann, who scored ten goals for Karlsruhe in the 2022/23 season, faces a tough task: The Dane, on loan from Heidenheim, is expected to replace Budu Zivzivadze, who has also moved to Heidenheim. The Georgian was the top scorer in the first half of the Bundesliga 2 season with 12 goals. Kaufmann hasn't found the back of the net since December 2023 (for Union). Additionally, Pinto Pedrosa starts in place of Sebastian Jung.

Three changes for Nuremberg

Miroslav Klose makes three changes to his starting line-up compared to the last match of the first half of the season: Villadsen, Soares and Emreli are new to the team, replacing Flick, Janisch and Yilmaz. Winter signing Tim Drexler (on loan from Hoffenheim) is on the bench.

Karlsruhe starting XI

Weiß - Pinto Pedrosa, Franke, Beifus, Herold - Rapp, Jensen - Burnić, Wanitzek - Kaufmann, Schleusener

Nuremberg starting XI

Reichert - Jeltsch, Knoche, Karafiát - Villadsen, Jander, Soares - Justvan, Castrop - Emreli, Tzimas

Great day for it!

The Max-Morlock-Stadion is ready for the second half of the season.

Christian Eichner on facing Nuremberg

"I'm expecting a close game against Nuremberg, but I could say the same for next week and the week after. They have many players who are on the verge of the next stage in their development. However, we want to put up a fight and impose our own game on the pitch."

Miroslav Klose on facing Karlsruhe

"Karlsruhe are dangerous and very effective even without Zivzivadze. However, we're playing at home and want to continue showing our brave and attacking football. I'm looking forward to Sunday."

Pointless goals

Nuremberg's Janni Serra has scored four goals in five Bundesliga 2 matches against Karlsruhe (across spells with Kiel, Bielefeld and his current club), yet still lost all five games.

Dramatic turnaround

The last meeting meeting these two saw Karlsruhe turn a two-goal deficit into a victory – the only time they've managed to do that this season – while Nuremberg dropped those points after taking a two-goal lead for the only time this campaign.

One-man show

In the previous encounter in Karlsruhe, Budu Zivzivadze fired the Baden side to a 3-2 victory with the only hat-trick of his Bundesliga 2 career.

Almost perfect

Karlsruhe are unbeaten in their last six against Nuremberg, collecting 16 out of a possible 18 points.
