Full-time: Braunschweig 0-0 Schalke

Eintracht Braunschweig battled to a 0-0 draw against Schalke despite being a man down. The visitors dominated the match and had significantly more shots on goal, but rarely created genuine danger. Even after Jannis Nikolaou's red card (67') for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, Schalke failed to make their advantage count. For the hosts, this was their first point after five consecutive defeats.

Tempelmann's quick reunion

Eintracht signed two Schalke players during the winter break. Returning player Ron-Thorben Hoffmann is not in the squad today, but Lino Tempelmann has gone straight into the starting XI. Tempelmann only played 163 minutes for Schalke in the first half of the season, spread across five appearances (two starts).

Schalke sticking to the tried and tested

Things went well at the end of 2024, so Kees van Wonderen doesn't need to change much. The only adjustment compared to the 4-1 victory in Elversberg just before Christmas: Paul Seguin, who was absent then, is now fit and replaces the injured Janik Bachmann.

Three changes for Braunschweig

Daniel Scherning makes three changes to the team that started the defeat in Nuremberg before the winter break: Szabó, Rittmüller and Tempelmann come into the team for Marie, Ba and Christian Conteh, who is serving a suspension after receiving two yellow cards last time out.

Schalke starting XI

Heekeren - Bulut, Schallenberg, Kamiński, Murkin - Seguin, Grüger - Aydin, Karaman, Antwi-Adjei - Sylla

Eintracht Braunschweig starting XI

Johansson - Ivanov, Bičakčić, Nikolaou - Rittmüller, Köhler, Tempelmann, Di Michele Sanchez - Kaufmann, Philippe - Szabó

Daniel Scherning on facing Schalke

"We've done everything to prepare well for this match. I'm satisfied and hope that we'll start the new year well."

Kees van Wonderen on facing Braunschweig

"We're happy that the season is starting back up again. We have a difficult match ahead of us, but we've worked hard and prepared as best we can. We'll look to get the basics right. Braunschweig won two friendlies in the winter break, and they also put in good performance against St. Pauli, in their last one. There are dangers waiting for us, if we're not careful, so we need to be alert and ready to go."

Favourite opponent

Schalke forward Kenan Karaman has scored three goals in his last two matches against Braunschweig.

No place like home

Braunschweig have lost only one of their four previous home matches against Schalke in the Bundesliga 2, a 1-0 defeat back in February 1991.

Early leaders

After their 5-1 opening-day victory against Braunschweig, Schalke were the first table-toppers of this Bundesliga season. It remains the biggest win of the campaign for the Royal Blues.
