Full-time: Cologne 1-2 Magdeburg

Thirty three shots to 11 and 4.64 to 1.17 in terms of xGoals in Cologne's favour but, in the end, Magdeburg are the ones celebrating. Cologne clearly dominated yet were wasteful, allowing Magdeburg to stay in the game. Ultimately, they struck with precision and picked up all three points. The result puts them second, albeit temporarily.

Ljubicic!

Another brilliant Cologne chance goes begging. Ljubicic finds himself one-on-one with Reimann, but the Austrian fails to beat the Magdeburg keeper, who once again reacts brilliantly.
68'

Cologne looking for a quick response

Cologne do not appear to be panicking after being pegged back. Thielmann powers down the right and delivers to Maina, whose shot is blocked. Lemperle arrives for the follow-up, but the U21 international is also unsuccessful.

Michel equalises for Magdeburg!

Cologne have had plenty of chances, but Magdeburg are back on level terms! A free-kick is played to the back post, where Michel is waiting to strike. That came a bit out of nowhere!

Kaars impressive, Urbig even better

Cologne's wastefulness in front of goal almost came back to haunt them as Kaars is set up perfectly, but his chipped shot is thwarted by the quick reactions of Urbig between the Cologne sticks.
59'

Martel next tries his luck

Cologne are having chance after chance here as they look to add to their slender lead. Martel shoots from inside the penalty area, but Reimann just manages to save it.
57'

Woodwork!

Again, Cologne threaten, this time down the right. A cross to the far post is headed back by Maina to Downs, and his deflected hits the upright.
56'

Finally on the scoresheet.

In the first half, none of Cologne's 18 shots on goal found the back of the net. However, their second attempt of this half was successful. That strike was their 101st attempt this term (20th of this match).
55'

Downs again!

Almost 2-0 for Cologne, with Maina again wreaking havoc down the left as he plays it back to Downs. The goalscorer, though, cannot beat Reimann from inside the area. The home supporters were preparing to celebrate there!
54'

Breaking the deadlock again

Downs scored his first second-tier strike against Schalke, and now he has scored his first home goal in Bundesliga 2. Both of those efforts have put his side in front.
53'

Cologne second in the table

The home fans are making themselves heard here. And they will be even happier to know that their team are currently second in the live standings.
51'

Lemperle effort blocked

The next Cologne attack rolls forward, with Lemperle next to try his luck. Magdeburg's defence manages to clear, however.
49'

Downs gives Cologne the lead

The 'Trömmelche' (drum) is making a racket in Cologne as they finally move in front. Heber's misplaced pass brings Downs into play, and the youngster plays to Lemperle. He crosses to Main, who then lays it off to Downs again, and he doesn't need to be asked twice as he gives his team a deserved advantage.

Cologne set season record

Cologne had 18 shots on goal in the first half, a new 2024/25 Bundesliga 2 high. They last had that many shots before the break of a league match almost 21 years ago, against Hannover in 2003. Cologne lost that game 2-1 - they will be hoping that isn't an omen.

Half-time: Cologne 0-0 Magdeburg

After 45 minutes, the score between Cologne and Magdeburg remains goalless. The hosts, in particular, must be looking at the scoreboard in disbelief - despite 18 attempts on goal and an xGoals value of 2.11, the Billy Goats have not yet found the back of the net. Magdeburg only managed to find their feet late on and probably go into the break feeling very fortunate to still be on level terms.

Magdeburg counter after a Cologne corner, but can't capitalise on it. Then, Amaechi dribbles to the byline and crosses into the centre before their opponents clear after a couple of attempts.

Stoppage time

Two extra minutes are added on.
42'

Too unselfish

Cologne slice through visitors' defence once more - however, Ljubicic decides against taking a shot in the penalty area and instead looks for the square pass, allowing Magdeburg to clear.
40'

Lemperle easily denied

The 17th shot on goal from Cologne in this half also fails to find its way into the visitors' net. Lemperle's effort from the edge of the penalty area poses no problem for Reimann.
38'

Cologne keep pushing

Lemperle curls a shot towards goal from the edge of the area, which Reimann parries. The rebound then goes begging, too - the Billy Goats will be wondering what they have to do score!

Well over

Reimann clears a corner to Ljubicic's feet, yet the resulting shot goes miles over the Magdeburg goal.
32'

Full throttle

In four of their five matches this season, Cologne have amassed at least 10 shots on goal before half-time (11 so far today). There is rarely a moment's rest for opponents under Gerhard Struber.

Downs wastes a chance

Magdeburg lose possession again and are quickly on the back foot. Downs shoots from 20 yards out but fires well over.

The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The scoreline remains goalless, but Cologne should really be in the lead - the stats back that up, too.

Break in play

El Hankouri has gone down unchallenged with Magdeburg on the attack. However, after receiving treatment, the Magdeburg player can continue.
19'

El Hankouri to the rescue

Paqarada wins the ball in the opponent's penalty area and delivers a sharp cross into the six-yard box. Lemperle is ready to tap into an empty net, but El Hankouri rushes in and deflects the shot onto the inside of the post at the last moment!
18'

Yellow card for Ljubicic

Ljubicic goes in too aggressively on the halfway line, resulting in the first booking of the match.

Up against it

Magdeburg have struggled to assert themselves in possession, while Cologne have been overwhelmingly dominant so far.
15'

Ljubicic!

Again, Cologne should have their noses in front! Lemperle strongly holds off Hugonet and plays the ball back to Ljubicic, but the Austrian's shot is too central, allowing Reimann to save!
14'

Cologne unfazed

However, the hosts are soon on the attack again. They combine themselves down the left, with Gnaka clearing the low cross just in front of the waiting Lemperle.
12'

First sign of life

Magdeburg combine quickly to move forward before Kaars takes a shot from outside the area that flies just wide of the post.
10'

Maina again

The Billy Goats keep pushing forward, and Maina tries his luck again. Reimann, though, is there once again to make the save. If this continues, it seems only a matter of time before Cologne break the deadlock.
9'

Pauli just over!

Next chance for Cologne! The corner from the left comes to Pauli at the near post, and the young defender heads it just over the bar.
8'

Only one team has turned up

Magdeburg's defence can hardly keep up with the hosts' attack. Next, Maina breaks down the left and his low cross is cleared for a corner just before it reaches Lemperle.

Huseinbašić!

Almost 1-0 to Cologne: Ljubicic lays it off to Huseinbašić on the edge of the box, and the Bosnia and Herzegovina international shoots towards goal. Reimann, however, manages to tip the ball over the crossbar with a brilliant reflex save!
3'

Cologne piling on the pressure

The hosts are going full throttle in the opening minutes. Downs' shot is blocked by the Magdeburg defence before Lemperle's attempt is deflected for a corner - which ultimately comes to nothing.
2'

Maina with the first shot

The Cologne fans passionately drive their team forward from the start, and Maina provides the first attempt on goal for the Billy Goats. Reimann, though, makes a confident save.

All the best, Christoph!

Minute's applause for Christoph Daum

Cologne pay tribute to the late Christoph Daum with a minute's applause before the match. The former Geißböcke coach passed away two weeks ago at the age of 70. His former employers are also wearing black armbands for this match.

Youthful Cologne

The Effzeh starting XI is, on average, more than three years younger (23.7 years) than that of their opponents, which at 26.8 years is also rather youthful. Cologne are approaching this season with youthful enthusiasm as they look to return to the top flight.

Key player back in action

Baris Atik contributed to more goals for Magdeburg (four goals, ten assists) last season than any other player, but has only made one brief appearance this season - he had to be taken off after 16 minutes against Braunschweig. His season hasn't really got going yet, but he will be looking to change that here.

Season premiere

Andi Hoti is in the starting line-up for Magdeburg for the first time this seasons, having previously made two substitute appearances.

Trio of changes for Magdeburg

Meanwhile Magdeburg, who are still unbeaten in the league this term, make three changes from the win over Nuremberg: Atik, Hoti and Krempicki replace Ceka, El-Zein (both on the bench) and Mathisen (not in the squad).

Cologne make one change

There is one change for Cologne from the win over Schalke last time out. Captain Timo Hübers, who was absent due to illness then, returns to the team, while Dominique Heintz moves to the bench.

Magdeburg starting XI

Reimann - Hoti, Hugonet, Heber - Musonda, Gnaka, Krempicki, El Hankouri - Atik, Kaars, Amaechi

Köln starting XI

Urbig - Thielmann, Hübers, Pauli, Paqarada - Martel - Maina, Huseinbašić, Ljubicic - Lemperle, Downs
