The club have released the former Cologne coach, appointing assistant coach Merlin Polzin on an interim basis.

Hamburg's 2-2 draw against Schalke was their fourth game in a row without a win, two losses and two draws in that time. Following an intensive analysis of the situation, sporting director Stefan Kuntz informed head coach Steffen Baumgart on Sunday morning (November 24) that he has been released with immediate effect.

Kuntz explained the decision and said: "Steffen gave everything for Hamburg with great passion, energy and committment right up to the end. Our analysis of the current situation and yesterday's game has made it clear once again that we believe a new impetus is necessary to get out of our current crisis of performance and results."

Taking over at Hamburg in February 2024, Baumgart's record at the club consists of 27 competitive fixtures, 25 in Bundesliga 2 and two in the DFB-Cup. During this time, he achieved an average points tally of 1.59 per game (12 wins, 7 draws and 8 losses).

Reacting to Hamburg's decision, Baumgart expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and said, "I would like to thank Stefan Kuntz and Jonas Boldt for the opportunity to work at my favourite childhood club."

"It was an exciting and very intense time. I remain connected to the club and wish Hamburg success in achieving their goals. My thanks also go to the entire staff and all employes at the office," he added.

Baumgart's assistants René Wagner and Kevin McKenna were also released with him.

Now interim coach Merlin Polzin is due to be in charge for their next match against Karlsruhe.
