Lovely one-touch play from Amiri, Havertz and Baumgartlinger on the edge of the Atleti box and eventually the ball is worked to the right to Weiser. He tries his luck with a speculative shot, but it's always rising and whizzes harmlessly over.

Lemar's beautifully disguised pass finds Herrera in space on the edge of the Leverkusen box. He takes it on the bounce and tries to lob Hradecky, who dives at full stretch to tip it over the bar.

Demirbay's corner from the right is headed clear, but only as far as Amiri, who is about 10 yards outside the Atleti penalty area. He controls it on his chest, but the ball just won't come down quickly enough and he snatches at his shot under pressure, fizzing an effort over the bar.

The Atleti midfielder is shown a yellow card for a hefty challenge on Havertz, who appears to be being targeted this half. It's the second or third time he's been on the receiving end of a strong tackle.

Most of the action is taking place in a crowded midfield, with the teams largely cancelling each other out. Neither has made any significant inroads into the other's half yet.

Lars Bender beats Saul to a high ball from the left that's swung into the Leverkusen box. He takes a scrape down his Achilles for his troubles from the Spain midfielder as he lands, but is OK to continue.

It's largely been a game of cat and mouse in the first 45 minutes, with no clear-cut opportunities at either end and only sporadic half-chances throughout. Leverkusen have enjoyed more possession (56 per cent), completed more passes (281 to 184) and covered more ground (38.6 miles to 37.4), but it's goalless at the break.

The Leverkusen winger shows great determination to beat his marker to a ball on the right, but his cut-back from the byline is plucked out of the air by Oblak.

Lars Bender bundles into Thomas to prevent an Atleti attack from gaining momentum. The home side are awarded a free-kick wide on the right, about 45 yards out. Trippier swings it in, but Hradecky comes off his line to claim it.

Leverkusen are playing well and not shirking any challenges. Their build-up play is neat, but just needs to be a bit quicker in the final third, as Atleti's well-drilled backline have snuffed out everything so far.

37' LEVERKUSEN KEEP-BALL

Bosz's men stroke the ball around well in midfield and eventually Havertz picks the ball up on the right. He cuts inside his man but is fouled, giving Leverkusen a free-kick in a promising position. It's whipped towards the near post, but Atleti have packed the box and are able to clear.

The Leverkusen midfielder, who just had to go off for treatment after taking an elbow to the face, sweeps a brilliant ball from left to right to Bellarabi. He has space to run into and gets to the edge of the Atleti area, but opts to try to jink past a defender instead of passing and the move peters out.

30' NICE BREAK FROM LEVERKUSEN

Sven Bender anticipates an Atleti pass inside his own box and immediately finds Havertz. The Germany international skips forward, looking at his options. He plays it out to Bellarabi on the right, but the winger's ambitious attempted crossfield pass to Volland at the back post is cut out. Shame, as there was potentially more in that attack for the visitors.

27' HOSTS SITTING DEEP

Having employed an aggressive high press early in the game, Atleti are now dropping back to the edge of their own penalty area when Leverkusen have the ball, inviting them forward in the hope of being able to exploit the spaces on the counter.

23' IMPRESSIVE FROM AMIRI

Amiri robs Thomas of the ball in midfield, muscling him off it just inside the Atleti half. He immediately spies Volland's run and slides a pass into his path, but the just doesn't quite have the pace to outrun his marker and eventually a free-kick is given against the Leverkusen forward.

20' NO PENALTY

Koke glides forward and his attempted cross bounces off Sven Bender's head. The home crowd appeal for a penalty, wrongly assuming it was a handball.

17' HALF CHANCE FOR ATLETI

Leverkusen struggle to clear an Atleti attack and the ball is flicked through to Correa, who gets a weak shot off under pressure from Tah. Hradecky comes off his line to make an easy save, but spills the ball at the feet of Costa. Fortunately for the goalkeeper, Costa was looking away, so Hradecky is able to pounce on it and breathe a sigh of relief.

14' HERMOSO FOR GIMENEZ

Atleti defender Gimenez signals to the bench that he needs to come off after a seemingly innocuous challenge with Amiri. He's replaced by Hermoso.

11' POSITIVE FORM LEVERKUSEN

A lovely incisive move from the visitors as Amiri releases Volland down the left before scampering forward into the box to receive the return pass. He shoots first-time but his effort is blocked by a defender.

9' BAUMGARTLINGER MISCUES

Leverkusen win a corner on the right and it's played short to Bellarabi on the edge of the area. His mishits his shot but it falls kindly to the unmarked Baumgartlinger, around 12 yards out. The midfielder takes a shot but he's leaning back and the ball sails over.

7' BENDER INTERCEPTS

Neat interplay from the home team on the edge of the Leverkusen area and the ball is played into the feet of Costa, but just as he's shaping to shoot Sven Bender nips and and takes the ball off his toe to clear the danger.

5' FIRST MEANINGFUL ATLETI ATTACK

The hosts get forward well down the left, with Lodi getting to the byline and pulling an inviting ball back into the box. Diego Costa goes down under a challenge and wants a penalty, but the referee waves play on. Eventually it falls to Trippier on the edge of the box, but the England international's first-time hit sails well over the bar.

Just as they did away to Juventus at the start of the month, Leverkusen are building from the back, attempting to play their way out of their own half with neat one-touch passes. Atleti appear to have anticipated this and are committing plenty of men forward to press. Possession is changing hands pretty frequently right now.

LEVERKUSEN EAGER TO SHOW TRUE COLOURS

Speaking at the club's pre-match press conference yesterday, midfielder Julian Baumgartlinger said he and his teammates are determined to make amends following their disappointing 3-0 defeat against Frankfurt on Friday.

"We're well aware of Atleti's power and quality," said the 31-year-old. "They can be extremely compact before launching a lightning-fast counters, but they can also keep the ball too. We're well prepared on what to expect. We want to show our own qualities in the game and do better than we did against Frankfurt in every area of the pitch."

CORREA UP FRONT FOR ATLETI

Diego Simeone has also sprung a minor surprise by picking Angel Correo to partner Diego Costa up top, with Alvaro Morata among the substitutes. Simeone has also opted for the experience of Mexican midfielder Hector Herrera for the injured Felix.

BELLARABI STARTS!

Bosz has thrown one surprise in his starting line-up, opting to keep Lucas Alario on the bench and starting Karim Bellarabi on the right wing, presumably so that his pace and attacking drive will pin back Saul on that side of the pitch.

INJURY WOES

Leverkusen will be deprived of three players who would ordinarily be in the starting line-up, with Charles Aranguiz, Leon Bailey and Wendell all absent through injury.

While head coach Peter Bosz has plenty of cover in midfield for the former duo, the loss of Wendell at left-back is a big blow, especially as Daley Sinkgraven - his back-up - is also injured. That could force Bosz into playing Lars Bender in an unfamiliar position.

CAUSE FOR OPTIMISM

Facing a side of Atletico's calibre is undoubtedly a big ask, but Leverkusen have held their own in previous meetings with the Spaniards. The teams have met six times in European competition since 2010, resulting in three draws, two Atletico wins and one for Leverkusen.

Indeed, Die Werkself have drawn on two of their three visits to Atleti, while current squad members Karim Bellarabi, Lars Bender and Wendell were all in the side when Leverkusen beat Los Colchoneros 1-0 in February 2015.

HELLO AND WELCOME

Leverkusen have their backs to the wall ahead of kick-off having lost their first two group games, but they can take heart from encouraging performances in both. Nevertheless, points are a must here, and getting off the mark would be a big boost psychologically.
