WATCH: BAILEY: "ALARIO'S DONE A GREAT JOB"

DIABY MAKES SURE!

Gikiewicz goes up for a corner as Augsburg desperately try to get a late equaliser. It's cleared to Bailey, who strides forward before balling a low ball forward. Diaby outpaces both Amiri and the defender to get to the ball first for an easy finish. The final whistle blows straight afterwards!

KEEP BALL

The hosts are stroking the ball around between themselves in midfield and at the back, not really pushing for a goal as running the clock down and bring their guests to despair.
82'

FLURRY OF SUBS

Both teams make changes, as Alario is given a breather - presumably with Thursday's Europa League fixture in mind. Augsburg bring on Richter and Gumny as they look for an equaliser, with defensive duo Khedira and Framberger making way.

ALARIO ON FIRE

The Argentinian now has three Bundesliga goals this season, taking his tally to five in six outings in all competitions in 2020/21. Kai and Kevin who?

ALARIO OFF THE POST!

Diaby dinks a cross from the right into the middle, where it finds Alario. The striker does really well to add pace and direction to the ball, but it comes back off the far post before being hoofed clear.
70'

SINKGRAVEN TO THE RESCUE!

Augsburg win the ball in Leverkusen's half and immediately counter with three on two. Niederlechner could shoot from the edge of the box, but shifts the ball to his right to Caligiuri. He could strike it first time but takes a touch to settle himself, just giving Sinkgraven enough time to slide in and make a crucial covering block.
66'

HOW ARE LEVERKUSEN NOT AHEAD?!

A delicious pass from Tapsoba to release Diaby down the left. The Frenchman scampers behind the defender and pulls the ball back into the middle from the byline. Wirtz is unmarked and shoots from eight yards but Gikiewicz makes a fine save - only to see the rebound fall at the feet of Bailey. He must score... but opts for power over precision and his effort crashes off the bar and is hooked clear.

ATTACKING CHANGE FOR THE HOSTS

GOAL DROUGHT ENDED

Caligiuri's strike ended Augsburg's run of over eight hours (488 minutes) without scoring at the BayArena! The midfielder has now had a hand in three of his side's six goals this term, scoring two and providing one assist.
58'

AMIRI VOLLEYS WIDE

Sven Bender floats a lovely ball from the halfway line over the Augsburg defence and it finds Amiri, whose first-time volley rolls narrowly wide of the post. It wouldn't have counted anyway though, as the assistant referee raises his flag for offside.
54'

VARGAS HEADS WIDE

The away side are looking to take advantage of their momentum and go close to a second goal as Vargas meets a corner from the right, but it bounces wide of the far post.
52'

CALIGIURI EQUALISES!

Augsburg have been much better this half - Gruezo fired just over moments ago - and now they have their goal. Vargas jinks in from the left and plays it to Caligiuri, in the right-hand side of the penalty area. He takes a touch, comes on to his left foot and drills it low past Hradecky.

DIABY SURELY?!

A real let-off for Augsburg surely as Diaby is given space on the left. He has the goal at his mercy but instead of shooting he tries to lay the ball off to Amiri, and a defender slides in to clear. That's the best chance of the game so far from open play.
46'

OFF AGAIN

Leverkusen get the ball rolling in the second half. Augsburg have made two changes at the interval as they bid to turn the game around, with attackers Vargas and Jensen on for Gregoritsch and Hahn.

LEVERKUSEN LEAD AT THE BREAK

Augsburg were the better side for the opening quarter of an hour or so, but the hosts gradually took control of the game and edged ahead through Alario's penalty. They've been largely untroubled at the back, but have struggled to get the better of the visiting defence too.

45'

ALARIO SLIP

Sinkgraven gets down the left and plays the ball inside to Alario, on the edge of the Augsburg penalty area. He lines up a shot but slips just as he's about to make contact, and his shot is no trouble for Gikiewicz.
42'

BRILLIANT FROM AMIRI

The Leverkusen midfielder shows great purpose down the left, jinking past two defenders and holding off a challenge before laying the ball across the face of goal. There's nobody there to finish it though, but it runs through to the back post where Palacios is arriving. His first-time effort is wayward though, and flies off towards the opposite corner flag.
41'

FINAL PASS MISSING

The game has opened up more in the last few minutes, as both teams look to score just before half-time. There's some neat interplay from both in midfield, but that killer ball has been lacking at either end.

FIRST SUB FOR LEVERKUSEN

Lars Bender is unable to continue, having looked a bit groggy on the sidelines. He's replaced by Dragovic, with Sven Bender taking over the captain's armband.

BENDER DOWN

Lars Bender is receiving treatment on the pitch after taking a knock to the head during a challenge. He slowly trudges off as the club's medical staff examine him, but he looks like he wants to continue.

NIEDERLECHNER ON THE TURN

A decent effort from the Augsburg forward, who is first to the second ball following Tapsoba's header to intercept a high ball over the top. He strikes the ball on the swivel on the right-hand edge of the penalty area, but Hradecky makes a good save.

ALARIO HOT STREAK

The Argentinian has now scored in each of his last three competitive outings for Leverkusen, his first such run at the club. His penalty was also Leverkusen's first shot of the game from inside the box.

WIDE FROM BAILEY

The Jamaican collects a sweeping ball from left to right, instantly bringing it under control, but his shot with his weaker right foot goes well wide of the far post.

Gikiewicz guesses the right way, diving to his left, but Alario's spot-kick has too much power behind it.

LEVERKUSEN GROWING

The hosts are starting to come into the game a bit more, with Augsburg unable to maintain their fierce running for too long. Bailey has a shot from the edge of the box comfortably saved by Gikiewicz, before Sinkgraven makes good ground down the left, only to see his cross cut out.
11'

AUGSBURG WORKING HARD

Augsburg's early intensity is reflected in the amount of ground covered, as they've collectively run over a kilometre (0.6 miles) further than Leverkusen.

NO JOY FOR LEVERKUSEN

Bailey drops deep into his own half to collect a ball from the defence. He turns and tries to release Diaby up top by spraying a long ball forward, but it's easily cut out by the away side.
7'

WIDE FROM NIEDERLECHNER

The Augsburg striker latches on to a loose pass from Amiri in midfield and immediately sets off for goal down the right. He doesn't have any teammates in support though, and his attempted shot from just inside the penalty area rolls tamely wide of the far post.
5'

NO WAY THROUGH

Leverkusen enjoy a longer spell on the ball for the first time, but they're constantly repelled by two very well-drilled banks of four protecting the Augsburg goal. Lars Bender tries a different approach with a long pass forward for Bailey to chase, but it's too strong and bobbles out for a goal kick.
3'

BOLD START FROM THE VISITORS

Augsburg coach Heiko Herrlich indicated pre-match that his side would pressure Leverkusen early on and they're doing just that, energetically hounding them high up the pitch and going into tackles aggressively. Most of the play has been concentrated in the home side's half so far, albeit without troubling Hradecky yet.

BIRTHDAY BOYS

Augsburg goalkeeper Gikiewicz turns 33 today, while teammate Niederlechner was 30 two days ago. Many happy returns, gents!

HERRLICH ON LEVERKUSEN

“They’ve got unbelievable quality," said the Augsburg head coach at his pre-match press conference. "We want to put them under pressure from the off, without leaving ourselves exposed and giving them too much room to play in.”

BOSZ ON AUGSBURG

“Augsburg are a team that stay compact at the back. They want to get forward with quick transitions and don’t build from the back, but play fast long balls up top. We want to implement our own game though, and we’re going out there to win.”

ONE-SIDED

TEAM NEWS - LEVERKUSEN

There's only one change for Leverkusen head coach Peter Bosz, though, despite his side having faced Nice in the Europa League on Thursday and with a trip to Slavia Prague coming up in three days. Daley Sinkgraven comes in for Wendell at left-back, but otherwise it's the same line-up that did the business with a 6-2 thrashing of Nice, meaning Karim Bellarabi, Florian Wirtz and Kerem Demirbay are all on the bench.

FAMILIAR FACES

TEAM NEWS - AUGSBURG

It's largely as expected from the visitors, who, with no European fixtures to take into account, can afford to play largely the same side that lost to Augsburg last time out. Head coach Heiko Herrlich makes only two changes to the starting XI, with Carlos Gruezo coming into central midfield for Tobias Strobl, while Florian Niederlechner replaces Fredrik Jensen alongside Michael Gregoritsch up top.
