Gladbach win back possession midway through their own half. Stindl pokes it on for the run of Embolo, who turns his marker in the box before beding harmlessly wide of the far post. The flag was up for offside against the Gladbach forward, in any case.

Plea moves the ball out to the right as Gladbach build once more. Hofmann lets it run for Scally, whose inviting low cross into the six-yard box is turned past the upright by Bochum defender Lampropoulos, with Kone on the stretch behind him. Certain goal denied.

Gladbach move the ball through the midfield with pace and precision. Stindl feeds Plea for a shot that he drags just wide of Riemann's right-hand post from 18 yards. The pass to Embolo, to his right, was perhaps the better option. Let-off for Bochum.

For a moment, it looks like Polter's in for Bochum. His first touch lets him down, though, and Elvedi is able to put in a recovery challenge. The Bochum forward got stage fright, there.

Bochum back off as Zakaria sizes up Riemann's goal. He doesn't quite catch it right, though, and drags wide from range.

Gladbach extend their lead late in the first half, just when Bochum were coming into the game. Plea brilliantly controls a long ball, before holding up the play in anticipation of Hofmann's run in behind. He finds the rampaging midfielder, who takes the lay-off in his stride and lashes across the goalkeeper from a tight angle inside the box. Superb finish from a player who's been playing right-back for Hansi Flick's Germany.

So much is going through young Scally up the Gladbach right. The American's been a revelation in his first season with the Borussia pros.
