Cologne head coach Steffen Baumgart has overseen half as many wins after four rounds of fixtures at the Cologne helm as he did across the entire 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign as Paderborn coach. The Billy Goats have made their best start to a Bundesliga season since 2015/16 (also seven points between Matchdays 1-4).

Skhiri missed last weekend because of a cold, but is back as usual to anchor the midfield. Baumgart is forced another change, though, with Kainz suspended after his red card in Freiburg. Thielmann comes in for him after missing the last two outings with illness himself. There's also a first start for Kilian for Cologne.

Nkunku continues in the trio behind Silva alongside Szoboszlai and Olmo after his Champions League hat-trick, with Forsberg on the bench. Adams is on the bench with Haidara preferred in Jesse Marsch's midfield. Simakan and Gvardiol are also into a defence that is still finding its identity after big-name summer departures.

"Leipzig are very aggressive when it comes to counter-pressing", said Baumgart at his media briefing before the game. "They press high and get a lot of joy through second balls. I expect a game with a high intensity. Leipzig have a lot of quality and pace; they are one of the best teams in the Bundesliga. They conceded a lot of goals against City and Bayern. But have also lost narrowly. Leipzig don't have a crisis in terms of performance, but results.”

"Cologne are a strong side who like a real battle," said Leipzig coach Marsch at his pre-match press conference. "They’ve started really well this season. For us, the situation is clear. We haven’t begun the way we had hoped. The lads will stay strong though. You have to show more fight during tough situations, run harder and win more challenges. The mood in camp is still positive."

Cologne won this fixture 2-1 on Matchday 30 last season, the result giving the side a huge confidence boost in their ultimately successful bid to avoid relegation. That was just their second victory in eight top-flight meetings to date against Leipzig, who have taken maximum points on four occasions (two draws).

In stark contrast to their visitors, Cologne have enjoyed a better start in terms of results under new boss Steffen Baumgart. Victories over Hertha Berlin and Bochum sandwiched a defeat away to Bayern, but they picked up a point away to Freiburg last week to come into the matchday in seventh place.

Die Roten Bullen haven't quite hit their stride under new coach Jesse Marsch, losing three of their four Bundesliga games so far; last week's 4-1 reverse at home to Bayern Munich was followed up by a 6-3 defeat away to Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday. Chrisopher Nkunku hit a hat-trick in that game, but summer signing Andre Silva only has one goal to his name so far. Can Leipzig turn things around here?
