MAINZ DOWN TO 10!
That has to be it for Mainz. They've been building up a head of steam with chances for Onisiwo and Niakhate, but Kohr collects a second yellow for a hight boot. Surely Union won't let their lead slip now?!

TWO-WO AWONIYI!
Awoniyi strikes again! It's an almost carbon copy of his first - pace, power and a smart finish, though Zentner will feel he should have done better after getting a hand to the shot across his goal. What a turnaround!

AWONIYI!
Awoniyi does the business against his former club to bring Union level. Kruse sends the the ex-Liverpool and Mainz striker into the box - he brushes off Nemeth and slides beyond the advancing Zentner. Brilliant finish - that's his fourth Bundesliga goal of the season!

INGVARTSEN MAKES WAY
Ingvartsen whips a free-kick just past the upright. That's his last action of the contest - he's replaced by Boetius. Anton Stach's also on for Burkardt, whose incisive pass led to the opening goal.

UNION UP THE ANTE
Union have started well into the first half. They're seeing more of the ball and are playing with far greater purpose as an attacking unit.

ADVANTAGE MAINZ!
Marcus Ingvartsen's goal aganst his parent club is the difference at the break. There's been very little to choose between the two sides. Awoniyi could - and perhaps should - have put Union ahead moments before the breakthrough.

MAINZ LEAD!
Union are undone. Mainz shift the ball forward to Onisiwo, who's at full stretch as he helps it onto Ingvartsen. The Mainz striker, on loan from Union, sweeps a very tidy finish into the bottom corner, to Luthe's right. The MEWA Arena goes bananas!

PINBALL
Burkardt drives into the Union box. The grey shirts get in a right old muddle and can't clear. Barreiro swings a boot at the loose ball, shanking wide.
32'
PASS AND MOVE
Union play some lovely one-touch stuff in and around the Mainz box. The lay-off for Haraguchi is a little on the fierce side, though, and he drives wide on his weaker left foot from the edge of the area.

OFF CUE!
Now it's Mainz's turn to trouble Union. Onisiwo hangs up a cross that has just too much on it for Ingvartsen in the six-yard box. Lucoqui connects first time at the far post, but steers comfortably wide. Should have done better!
23'
BIG CHANCE!
Max Kruse gets in behind the Mainz defence for the first time. His low ball into the box is weighted to perfection for the run of Taiwo Awoniyi, who's caught in two minds. Left foot, right root - what do you? The ex-Mainz loanee misses with both!

BUNDESLIGA DEBUT
Jerry St. Juste pulls up with a muscular complaint - he can't continue. On comes 20-year-old David Nemeth, signed from Austrian side Mattersburg in summer 2020, to make his Bundesliga debut.

AMBITIOUS!
Max Kruse lines up a free-kick some 40 yards from the Mainz goal. He goes for it direct, but doesn't find the target.

BELL MILESTONE
Mainz defender Stefan Bell makes his 200th Bundesliga appearance today. He's the second Mainz player to reach the milestone after Nikolce Noveski.

GIEßELMANN THREAT
We've already seen Niko Gießelmann launch a free-kick into the Union box. He's been a revelation at left-back for the Eisernen so far this season, and for 15 percent of Fantasy Bundesliga managers! The former Fortuna Düsseldorf defender begins the day on 63pts.

THE KITS
Mainz are in their traditional red and white kit, backed by a vociferous home crowd. Union are sporting their grey camo number.
Kick-off!
THE STORY SO FAR
Mainz's impressive start to the new season, following on from their remarkable escape in 2020/21 under Bo Svensson, has come unstuck in recent weeks. A 1-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen last time out makes it two games without a win for the 05ers - following a draw with Freiburg. They are the lowest scorers in the top half of the table with only six goals to their name. Union, meanwhile, bounced back from their first defeat of the season against Borussia Dortmund with a late 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld last Saturday. They're a point behind Mainz, which is no mean feat given their UEFA Europa Conference League commitments.
MAINZ TEAM NEWS
Szalai is unable to add to his scoring just yet with a knee injury keeping him sidelined for another week - Burkardt leading the line instead with Onsiwo and Ingvartsen for company. With captain Niakhate only fit to be on the bench and defender Hack a doubt, Svensson makes no changes.
UNION TEAM NEWS
Urs Fischer is forced into one change with Baumgartl ruled out with a head injury, which sees Jaeckel come into the three-man defence from the start. Otherwise, the capital club restore Haraguchi to midfield, with Prömel starting deeper.
