SPOILS SHARED

Gladbach will be the more frustrated of the two teams after having 31 shots at goal - more than they've had in a single Bundesliga game since October 2010 (in a 1-1 draw with Wolsburg). Stuttgart defended resolutely and will return home satisfied with the point.

OVER FROM GINTER

Ginter takes the free-kick, but curls an effort well over the bar.
88'

DANGEROUS POSITION

Embolo is brought down right on the edge of the Stuttgart box, giving the hosts a free-kick in a highly promising location...
85'

FÜHRICH THWARTED

A rare Stuttgart attack that ends with a shot as Führich scurries toward down the right, cuts inside and shoots low. There's not enough power behind it to seriously trouble Sommer, though.
81'

SCALLY GIVEN A BREATHER

The American teenager is taken off, replaced by Keanan Bennetts.
78'

BREDLOW SAVES!

Plea drives forward again and gets to the edge of the Stuttgart area. He shots powerfully, low towards Bredlow's right, but the VfB keeper reads it all the way and makes a good save.
75'

DOUBLE CHANGE

Two substitutions for Stuttgart now as they bid to refresh their forays forward: Coulibaly and Marmoush are replaced by Förster and 18-year-old Danish attacker Faghir, who makes his Bundesliga debut.
73'

HOSTS ENERGETIC

The arrivals of Herrmann and Plea have had the desired effect, injecting considerably more zip into the team's attacks.
69'

ALMOST INSTANT DIVIDENDS!

Plea takes matters into his own hands and dribbled forward in a central position. He goes past three or four players and gets into a shooting position, but Mavropanos slides in at the last minute to make a vital block before Bredlow needs to intervene.

FRESH LEGS (AND IDEAS?) FOR GLADBACH

The Foals' attack has looked a tad toothless in the last 10-15 minutes, so coach Hütter reacts by bringing on Herrmann and Plea for Stindl and Netz.
60'

COULIBALY FIRES WIDE

The Stuttgart winger drives forward, forcing the Gladbach defence to back off him. He cuts inside onto his favoured left foot and shoots towards the far post but doesn't get enough whip on the ball and it sails wide.
56'

ONE-SIDED

Stuttgart have only had one effort on target - and scored. Gladbach have been peppering the visitors' goal, with every outfield player having at least one shot, but they can't manage to get the better of Bredlow again.

STINDL CAUGHT BY SURPRISE

Ginter has another long-range shot, this time from about 25 yards. It skids through to Stindl, who's unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box, but he's not expecting it and the ball bounces off his leg and out for a goal kick.

LEVEL AT THE BREAK!

Gladbach needed that goal, and it came at a good time too, allowing Hütter to make any adjustments during the interval. They've been on top for most of the game so far, albeit without creating any serious chances, but we've been treated to two long-range belters so far - long may it continue in the second half!

HOFMANN EQUALISES!

Gladbach get their goal, and a very nice one it is too. Hofmann takes a corner from the left, which Stuttgart struggle to clear. It's eventually headed out to the left-hand edge of the box, where Hofmann is now lurking, and he takes a touch before rifling a superb half-volley into the net!

BREDLOW DENIES NETZ!

Gladbach finally manage to find some space in the Stuttgart box as Kone tees up Netz, but his shot is blocked by a strong left hand from Bredlow.

NO FINAL BALL

The Foals are linking up well in midfield but seems to run out of steam when they get to the Stuttgart penalty area and haven't been able to get behind the defence of late.
34'

COULIBALY LIVELY

The Stuttgart winger is his side's best attacking outlet today, his pace and dribbling ability a constant menace on the break.

GLADBACH PUSHING AGAIN

Hofmann drills the ball low and hard into the middle from the right. It ricochets off a couple of ankles and could land anywhere, but Karazar is closest to it and hoofs it clear.

THE OPENING GOAL

Mavropanos really caught hold of that one...
24'

WIDE FROM EMBOLO

Stindl crosses towards the back post and Embolo beats his marker to the ball, but can't direct his shot on target.
19'

GINTER HAS A GO!

The Gladbach centre-back evidently takes inspiration from Stuttgart scorer, also a centre-back, and he unleashes a fierce shot from a long way out. He catches it brilliantly and has Bredlow worried enough to dive at full stretch, but the ball arrows narrowly wide of the post.
15'

MAVROPANOS STUNNER!

Wow! Where did that come from? The Stuttgart defender receives the ball a good 35 yards out and smashes it at goal. It catches Gladbach completely off guard and whistles into the bottom corner. It's very much against the run of play, but Stuttgart lead!
14'

HOSTS ON TOP

Stuttgart may have begun the game on the front foot, but Gladbach are very much in charge now. They've had 65 per cent of possession in what is largely one-way traffic towards the visiting box.

KONE GOES CLOSE!

A corner is only half-cleared to the edge of the Stuttgart box, but Kone is lurking. The midfielder takes a touch to control the ball before curling an effort at goal that drops just over the bar.

SIXTH IN SIGHT FOR GLADBACH

Victory here would lift the Foals into the top half of the table for the first time this season. After Leipzig's draw earlier, and defeats for Wolfsburg and Cologne, Adi Hütter's side would jump form 10th to sixth if they earn victory.
7'

FIRST GLIMPSE OF GOAL

Hofmann delivers a corner from the right and Beyer leaps highest to connect around the penalty spot, but his header bounces well wide of the target.

SCALLY MAKING WAVES

The American teenager gets on the ball inside the Stuttgart box and does well to hold off a couple of challenges before getting a shot away, but the referee blows for a free-kick for Stuttgart - he inadvertently caught Kempf in the face with a trailing hand.
3'

INTENSE OPENING

Both teams are pressing high up the pitch; there's no sitting back and waiting. VfB are attacking largely down their left side through Sosa and Führich, but the home side get back in numbers and are keeping them at arm's length so far.

STUTTGART IN THE HOUSE

GLADBACH UNCHANGED

Foals coach Adi Hütter has named an unchanged side following the 3-1 triumph over Wolfsburg on Matchday 7 – the first time in eight months that Gladbach begin with the same 11 in two consecutive Bundesliga games. That means Embolo leading the line up top, supported by Stindl and Hofmann in attacking midfield, with Scally and Netz providing width on the flanks as wing-backs.

STAGE SET IN GLADBACH

TEAM NEWS – STUTTGART

VfB boss Pellegrino Matarazzo makes three changes to side following the 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim prior to the international break. Bredlow starts in goal for Müller, making just his second Bundesliga appearance for the club, while Ito and Nartey come in for Anton and Mangala.

GLADBACH STARTING XI

Sommer - Ginter, Elvedi, Beyer - Scally, Zakaria, Kone, Netz - Hofmann, Stindl (c) - Embolo

GLADBACH SUBS

Sippel, Jantschke, Wolf, Benes, Müsel, Neuhaus, Herrmann, Olea, Bennetts

STUTTGART STARTING XI

Bredlow - Mavropanos, Ito, Kempf - Coulibaly, Karazor, Endo (c), Sosa - Führich, Nartey - Marmoush

STUTTGART SUBS

Schock, Stenzel, Mola, Didavi, Förster, Klimowicz, Ahamada, Al-Ghaddioui, Faghir

THE STAKES

These two respectively finished eighth and ninth in the Bundesliga last season with just four points separating them in the end, but both have struggled for consistency in 2021/22; the Foals have won just three of their first seven league outings, while Stuttgart have won just twice. Both could do with all three points today as they bid to climb back up the standings.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

As surprising as it may seem, Stuttgart have the better record historically. Of the 98 Bundesliga meetings between these teams to date, VfB have taken the spoils 40 times, compared to Gladbach's 29 (29 draws). Pellegrino Matarazzo's side also triumphed on their last trip to Gladbach, earning a 2-1 win in May this year.
